UPDATED WITH PHOTOS: Flooding in Mahaut, Layou

Raging waters in Mahaut this morning

There has been significant flooding in Mahaut this morning. This has forced the closure of the Health Center in the community.

One lady, Sylvia Augustine, was trapped on the Health Center premises and had to be carried out by a DNO reporter with the help of a  colleague. Eyes screening for diabetics at the facility has been cancelled.

The water level is reportedly still rising, houses are being flooded and are on the verge of being washed away.

The flooding is due to heavy rainfall overnight.

Meanwhile in Layou traffic flow is at a virtual standstill because of flooding in the area.

Motorists and pedestrians in the area are urged to exercise  extreme precaution.

The Layou Valley gained national attention when the Mattieu Dam collapsed earlier this year flooding the area.

It is obvious that the places that got floded has an issue with the water drainage system. That has nothing to do with god. It’s simple physics man….Too much water, little drainage equals flooding. It’s that simple. Not everything has to do with God.

In a time like this the people of God need to come together, and pray for our nation; the bible tells us that we are living in the last days. Matthew 24 also states that these signs must happen before Jesus comes, and they are happening before our eyes. The question is are we ready for Jesus to come? As we come together in prayer, we must forsake and turn from our wicked ways God will hear and heal our beautiful island of Dominica, that’s His promise 2 Chronicles 7:14 lovely dominica

Wow, my Mahaut! Well we share one thing in common today. Rain, and lots of it. . . even if we are thousands of miles apart, it’s been raining in Virginia Beach for weeks now! Thankfully, we have not had that much flooding. So my heart goes out to all my fellow islanders, relatives, friends and hope that everyone can stay safe until this flooding has subsided. Please be careful.

i’ve listened to everybody talking about each others spelling in this time of distress, but what we should be focussing on is “HOW ARE WE GOING TO HELP EACH OTHER AND THE COUNTRY DEAL WITH THE AFTERMATH?” i’ll start by pledging US$1000.00 TO HELP.let me hear an AMEN!!!!!! @ Anne

What those atheists, critics and scoffers do not know. in their mortal and spiritual ignorance, God allows these things to happen to bring out the common good and holiness in everyone. He sends signs and they are so blind and living in darkness that they do not recognize those signs.
We know the saying, into every life some rain must fall. We must except this will happen sooner or later as much as it was not expected. Other people throughout the world experience similar occurrences and even worst. Nature takes its course and we can do nothing about it.

You guys should be ashamed. Dominica News Online is a tool, and that tool can be used in many ways for some. Your approach to situations really does show the level of hypocrisy and negativity, ignorance and lack of respect for self and others. Make a change. Life is a choice and death is a decision. in other words, you can choose how you want to live but how you die is not a choice. it is inevitable. We must be more open to positivity. How can we get together to assist in this little disaster that just occurred. We know how our country is already. Why isn’t there a program where government has young men and women on call to assist in the clean up of these places. Young people who would be happy to make a dollar to eat. What are the trades giving most assistance in this time. People need information. Put out Insurance companies numbers, Baco/Big Truck Assistance contacts, any thing but nothing. The nothing being of course the mindless chit chatter. Come on, don’t hide behind your computers and write negative things to…? to? what feel better? hahaha. On that note, start to pray more often to who you believe in and pray for our country and the people in it and all over the world. Peace and Love.

Way Papa. The level of discuss in the face of so much damage on our island gives away the high rate if illiteracy on our island. Say something positive and constructive non people. Discuss matters like Why all this flooding? Were islanders sufficiently informed by the Met office or Disaster preparedness office? Is planning doing their job in ensuring that people build in safe areas away from ravines and cliffs? Are our gutters and culverts properly managed to ensure that they are free of debris during these heavy rains? Who is responsible for clearing these drains and culverts these days since public works garage has been privatised? What can each of you do to help reduce the effect of these disasters on your homes and community? Do you think that workers should be sent home during these times? is it wise to take workers from the safety of their workplaces and send them into danger before the situation improves? Young people use your brains for positive talk and worthwhile discussion. What’s your opinion on the issues raised?

Well some of us clearly couldn’t be bothered to learn to spell in school, and sadly we are so ignorant that we refuse to learn anything new now that we are adults, we even take offense if someone offers constructive criticism. If that is a reflection of the nation on a whole, well it is no wonder that there is so much disunity in this place. We will continue to eat each other up. What conceit!

    • Kalinago Empress
      September 28, 2011

It could be a typo! No one is perfect, all you could offer was a simple correction to the error. Instead you’re referring to someone else as “foolish”..

      • SMH!
        September 28, 2011

        @Kalinago Empress: I know right!

I don’t mind if its a genuine correction, aimed at helping the person because some of us do need the help. But magway ca stop belittling people shait man!

Sometimes it could be a Freudian slip, where you think one word but type another….it has happened to me. This can occur easily
with words which are close in pronunciation or even homonyms.

Ahfuss I does enjoy correcting the correctors/Grammar Gods – then I scrutinizing dere post more to give them a dose of their medicine…..my pleasure!
