Gay men describe Dominica experience as ‘horrible’

The men in Dominica

Two gay men who were arrested and charged with indecent exposure during a cruise stop in Dominica have described their experiences in the hands of the island’s authority as ‘horrible.’

“It was a horrible experience,” Dennis Jay Mayer, one of the men arrested, told David Begnaud of television network, KTLA.

Mayer, 43, and his partner John Robert Hart, 41 both of Carlifornia, were arrested On Wednesday after they were reportedly seen having sex on the deck of the cruise ship. They pleaded guilty to indecent exposure on Thursday and fined $2,400 each.

“I’ve never seen something like this,” Mayer said. “I’ve never seen people chanting and protesting in the street. It was amazing.”

KTLA quoted Mayer as saying they were held in jail for 19 hours in inhumane conditions. “No light, no water, no toilet,” he said, describing the conditions. “We were taunted all night long. They paraded us around like we were some oddity.”

Mayer also told KTLA that the Dominican authorities even wanted them medically examined. “”They were going to transport us to a medical facility and have us medically examined to determine if we had engaged in sexual activity,” he said.

Hart and Mayer left Dominica on Thursday after making their court appearances and paying the fines.

I think the Dominican authorities should have just warned the couple, and cruise ship, that they could not be naked on their balcony.

All of this over naked men on a cruise ship balcony makes Dominica appear to uptight and homophobic.

    • March 30, 2012

Dominica isn’t uptight; it is exercising its sovereignty. The only reason Dominica may seem uptight to some is because there are people trying to spin and distort the actual details surrounding the incident in order to use it as a tool to further acceptance of homosexuality.

As for the words ‘homophobic’ or, ‘homophobia’, they are coercive labels intended to intimidate, manipulate and silence opposition to homosexuality. A phobia is an irrational fear of something. No one wants to be considered afraid of something, or consider him or herself afraid of something, let alone be considered irrational. As the social effect of stigmatizing someone with these labels is potentially long lasting, it constitutes a particularly insidious form of psychological abuse. In an ironic twist, people show genuine fear and cowardice every time they are bullied by those attempting to silence rational opposition to irrational behavior through the application of stigmatizing psuedo-psychological labels such as these.

i am sure that the majority of those who were out there protesting are more gay than the ones they were chastising. hiding behind those naive women that you can fool with your money and material possessions. get out of the darn closet and stop attacking innocent people. you attack gay people yet you sleep with and impregnate teenagers. you cheat on your wives. you break the law in ways that you can cover up. true it may not be right in the sight of the higher power, but let him judge not you all.

What these guys did was stupid and disrespectful. However, in stead of the police and officials behaving in a civilized manner (which they really should have done) they handled it in a way that makes Dominica and Dominicans appear ignorant, bigoted and pretty unpleasant. So now – at last, Dominica is famous but for all the wrong reasons. I may be Dominican but I am certainly NOT “Dominica” as flaunted by the tourism office’s latest catch phrase.

my 2 cents here…. I am not for this gay thing but have learnt to tolerate it as it is all around me in todays world. they are the parents of my kids classmates, they are my colleagues and even my friends. I do not hate them but instead dislike their lifestyle. but they too might dislike mine, for being a single mother, for having been a dependent on the system….. so who decides who is right or less wrong for the choice we make? i dont know but i thought religion teaches us to “judge not less ye be judged”. isnt it ultimately Gods’ say? arent we supposed to love our neighbour as ourselves? perhaps i missed out on some during sunday school classes. anyway, im hoping that there will be some closure on this because it seems that we just love to dwell on anything negative…. till it becomes us. while i believe that dcans are very homophobic like many other parts of the world… i would not conclude by saying that the arrests were made because of their sexuality. I may be thousands of miles away from my homeland but i would still like to believe that it was done for the fact that the two men were indeed participating in an act which should be reserved for private. I read one comment by someone on facebook that it was their private cabin and balcony but if it is in the public eye… sorry it does not constitute as private anymore. furthermore…. who do Americans think they are anyway… they think that they can go anywhere in the world and do as they please… before you travel you should always know the laws of that land so as to avoid any unnecessary attention. Americans always make an excuse because they can never admit to being wrong. They are trying to belittle Dominica but I am not aware of any hate crimes in Dominica where someone is killed for being gay. In America… ppl committ suicide and are attacked everyday for being gay. So i dont know who has more priviledges for being free. Dominica or America? I may not agree with many of our practices but neither will i put down my place of birth for America. Many people migrate to America as they call it the land of greener pastures and when they do they see “miseh”. An American in America will be fined for sex in public. A Canadian in Canada will be fined for sex in public. So what is the issue here? It is not an attack on being gay for gay is all over the world and rampant in Dominica. It is the law of the land being upheld. Americans, please respect the laws wherever you go… you are not above the law , not even in America you are.

Yes in most other countries there would have been consequences, not the issue. If these men would have been fined for their behaviour and sent on their way and the cruise ship warned no issue. The military police boarded the ship charged and arrested these men for “buggering”. Now there is an issue. Leads me to be believe that if it was a straight couple the arrest would not have happened. Which is why the term “buggering” was used. Which could carry a sentence of 14 years in prison.

fir those still interested in this topic this is a comment taken from ‘LGBTQNATION’ a gay web site which ran the story:

Hugh Hysell · Theatre Producer at Peter and the Starcatcher
Oh PLEASE! I was on the cruise, and LOTS of people saw them having sex on their balcony – Cruisers and locals (including children). The balcony rails are glass (see thru) and they had sex in several positions. Tru the island is homophobic, but public sex (especially in front of minors) is against the law throughout the world. Now this couple is claiming that they are victims and that Atlantis did nothing to help them. Atlantis worked with them all day, along with a lawyer and a congresswoman. Grow up and take responsibility for doing a stupid thing.

Are you happy and gay or are you artificial and doing unnatural acts? Unnatural sexual acts is a crime and is illegal.

Interesting how no one has ever come forward publicly to back up such statements. The only people “claiming” to have witnessed this have anonomously hidden behind comments after various internet articles. I find it amazing in times like today when the majority of people have cell phones with cameras and video recording capability not one, not a single person, took a picture or recorded a video has surfaced to back up the accusations. When you put this together…no named witnesses and no actual proof, it boils down to accusations and what looks like a shake down by the Dominica authorities.

Never again. I have been to too many places where there is rampant heterosexual “sin” excused while gay sin brings the old ladies down to the police station to yell at them, call them names. Look for Grenada and Dominica to be taken off list of safe tourist destinations.

Between 2008 and committed to 2013 the US has provided financial aid to Dominica in the amount of $288 Million…most of it going to programs to assist the people of Dominica in becoming self sufficient, feeding their children and getting health care…sounds a lot like welfare to me.

According to the “Country Poverty Assessment Dominica” for 2008-2009 submitted to the Caribbean Development Bank the majority of women with children remain single while the majority of men father children choose not to marry. It did not give numbers but it speaks of this issue and how it impacts Dominica negatively. It is ironic that so many in Dominica are quick to condemn Gays but are unwilling to take a hard look at their own lives. I suggest when pointing the finger at others those individuals take a look in the mirror and see just who the finger is being pointed at.

Everyone is crying that they broke the law of the country. If it is illegal for two men to have sex then why have a gay ship visit the island. Are you saying it illegal when it is out in the open and ok when it is done in private? I mean if it is illegal then it should be for both open and private. The first and inital charge should have been indecent exposure. Now Dominica name is being dragged through the mud by the slow minded people in the Tourism Department. To this day no one has said anything or attempted to clean this mess.

Many comments which I will read later. Last night a friend informed me that Dominica is in the Toronto news and that a Toronto TV Station CP 24, a sister station of CTV broadcasted that one of the homosexual men stated that they were ill-treated during their incarceration. I replied, I will contact this TV Station on Monday.
As read on DNO the Atlantis Cruise President stated that they were with them all night long to ensure that they were they safe. Therefore, what is he talking about? Whatever he experienced is due to his arrest. I maintain it served him right. I am so disgusted with this homosexual issue and those people expecting every one in the world to accept their immoral attitude and practice which is an abomination. I stand by the Police Force and all Dominicans who oppose them, their vist and their immoral activities. Our God does too!

    • March 25, 2012

I am in harmony with you all the way here!

I simply need to add again and again, why don’t we simply ignore those people and their cruise ship?

Why allow them to anchor in our port? What are Dominicans doing giving them any attention, to the point that they are on the docks looking into their ship?

I’m in support of gay rights. What I don’t support is the disrespect of Dominicans. When I first heard about the arrest I thought that they were picked out for no reason. Well shame on me! Dominicans are a case. We know that! Dominicans aren’t prudes. All you have to do is watch our Carnival to know that. But not all the Dominican population is flamboyant and scantilly dressed. Common you guys, you know your mother or your grandmother don’t want to see that. This is where this whole thing changed for me. Look at it from elder Dominican perspective, young kids and what their parents at home teach them is right. I can’t just go to central park and sit in my car naked? I can’t live American Airlines Aircraft without a shirt on. Infact if you breastfeed your child without covering on an aircraft or in public these Americans will have you tossed out.

If what is being reported is true, when asked about what they were wearing, did the men say boxers or swim trunks? No they didn’t anwser like that. The man said he was partially dressed…mmmm?

They plead guilty to indecent exposure, paid the fine and left. Our country has a bunch of old laws that need fixing, but the law is there and if the cruise ship is honest and that they warned their passengers about the law, then these men were wrong. I think they should have been a little bit smarter knowing the sentimemnts of the region in which they’re visiting. I listened to their comments on KTLA and I don’t believe they took responsibility for their part in this entire fiasco.

They could never do that in San Francisco or Atlanta and get away with it. I believe that Dominicans shouldn’t attack the way our police dealt with the matter. Have you all seen how they deal with locals? These men for were treated better than Dominicans. Their case was rushed through the courts and they were on a flight out to the US in short order. If you as a Dominican committed a crime in the US you would have to serve your time and then be deported. One of the gentlemen was a police officer. He complains about taunting by our police and people in the jail. I think with his experience in law enforcement he has done his share of taunting as well.

I support Dominica because I can’t for the life of me think these two guys out of over 2000 men on a ship was just picked out for being gay! This is what they’re saying and they shouldn’t continue to lie.

The funny thing is, I feel compelled to to take a stance because their gay community has basically tried to ruin Dominica’s image since this event occured. For a community to generalize an entire country (many calling Dominicans ugly, wishing for a tsunami to hit the island etc etc) based on the actions by two men is ridiculous and hypocritical. They should spend more time focused on achieveing rights in their own country before spreading propaganda about Dominica.

Dominicans who join in with them on this smear campaign to ruin this island should be appalled and let me tell you, the grass is never greener on the other side.

Dominicans need to be polite and show restraint when expressing our views about something we don’t like.

I was first misinformed when I initially responded to this article. After learning the facts, I understand clearly what transpried.

My mother always taught me to cherish my name and reputation, because it is all I will have no matter what else I accomplish.
Dominica cannot afford to sustain such negative press in the international community. The Minister of Tourism should have been infront of this issue, and not behind it.
At this point, the truth is irrevelant. If your reputation is tranished, it is extremely difficult to repair it in the age of modern media and the Internet.

This confusion is brought about by religion, before Dominica had religion the people were more tolerant, and loving, now religion have made us , ignorant and bigoted as a people.
The men were on the ship, not on land. The fact that they were arrested is a sham, because base on the bible, 90% of the children born in Dominica are born out of wedlock, so all the parents should be in jail, same laws of God which says parents should be married, then the married are committing adultery, they too should be stoned according to the bible. Eating pork is abomination according to the bible, and 99% of Dominicans eating pork in public, why have they not been arrested, Dominicans have just excelled themselves in their ignorance and made the world know how uneducated a people they really are. I am a Dominican I was thinking seriously of returning to live in Dominica, but after this display of small mindedness, no way. I blame all those evangelist who came to Dominica in the last 30 years and taught Dominicans the doctrine of hate from America. That is the legacy of Eugenia Charles selling Dominica to America in 1980, bigotry and hatred and ignorance.Well a generation brought up in ignorance, so America only have herself to blame for the treatment of those men in Dominica. Back in the 70’s the incident would have passed without any drama, it would be talked about but no arrest. It was a more tolerant Dominica.

    • Francisco Telemaque
      March 25, 2012

Law and order I hate to be like this but you are a damn fool!

You are very ignorant, religion has nothing to with decency! There was a time when it was a disgrace for a woman to smoke cigaret’s and drink rum in our country.

In the late 1950’s, early 1960’s one could scarcely find women drinking and smoking in public, even in the 1960’s women were reluctant to ware pants, never mind kissing in public, so why should the immorality of homosexuality be flaunted in our faces and be accepted by our people.

If a heterosexual male and female engaged in sexual intercourse in a park, or on a dark street corner in Dominica, and they are caught by the police, they would be arrested, so why are you people condoning an act of homosexual sex in broad daylight in our country.

You people are as miserable as the animals who committed the act, where are your morals?

What they did in Dominica, could have never happened in America, not even in the darkest hours of the night!

So why imposed that on our people?

All of you people who are supporting this thing, you do so with the fear of falling out of favor with America. The fact is America the law of America, does not tolerate such animalistic behavior in the streets. Homosexuals in America are constantly in danger of loosing their lives, people under normal circumstances does not tolerate homosexuality.

How many people has lost their lives in this country all due to the intolerance of those who indulges into such filth!

What is the problem with our people, those of us who appreciate and tolerate this filth, have you people no shame! You can stay in Dominica and run off your mouths, those of you who are Bull-poppers in Dominica, I invite to come to America, and walk around the place talking about you are bull-poppers, and see how much you will be appreciated, or how much you will live in the neighborhood you would have chosen to live.

You people are on there side, they are not on yours, they have long forgotten you, so babble as you all may you will benefit nothing from it, bring your black butts out here play aunty-man and see how many kicks you will get in your butts!

All of you supporters of homosexuality are nothing more than a bunch of sick demonic possessed people, God will Judge you, as he has already condemned you.

Please educate yourself. Homosexuality is rampant in the animal kingdom. Humans may be a higher species but still an animal. Homosexuality is as normal as rain. Not every day is a sunny day and not every human is heterosexual. Use your brain and think this through logically. I don’t know why people find homosexuality so odd. Be objective and stop looking for a reason to hate someone. I question the sexuality of any man who hates homosexuals. I think deep down they’re homosexual and this is how they deal with it by casting stones at others.

      • tirips

You are incorrect. Fact is over 1000 species of animal engage in same sex acts. Only leads one to believe that it is part of the natural order. Only those who are ignorant and bigoted believe homosexuality is not normal. There was a time people used the Bible, and some still do, to make the argument that people of color were lesser then whites…in times of slavery it was justification. The argument used against Gays today is no different. The people of Dominica may not like this but they have a lot in common with the Gay community when it comes to struggles for being recognized as an equal person.

When faced with clarity of reason, the perverse response is always to twist facts, confuse, mislabel, mischaracterize and psychologically manipulate people into a state of clouded reason; a foggy mental state preferred by those with the intent to further erode sound mindedness. The most dangerous snake is always the one you do not see.

Now, I hope you do not mind, but as I cannot respond directly to the two replies your comment previously received, I would like to do so below:

@Anonymous, stop trying to mislead and psychologically manipulate others. When considering the big picture, homosexuality is about as healthy as acid rain. Even if other members of society can be coerced into believing human homosexuality is ‘normal’ through constant bombardment of such statements, distortion of facts, or the pervasiveness of its presence within an increasingly entropic social fabric, it is caustic and ultimately destructive. Though memories may fade, so too has EVERY society that has become corrupted in this way. History, having proven this repeatedly, stands in quiet testament to this truth, inconvenient as it may be to your pursuit of self-gratification, moral relativity and agenda. Objectivity is about looking at things in a clear-minded, non-subjective way, not confusing the thinking of others or trying to elicit an adverse emotional response through coercion with psychologically manipulative tactics, such as the insinuation of hate, where only sound reason was clearly present. I question the ethics, moral integrity, mental health, and intention of anyone using undeserved labels such as hate in a coercive way, as you have attempted to do. I think deep down they are twisted and, therefore, attempt to twist others in order to feel that their own degraded condition is somehow more acceptable. The desire for acceptance causes them to seek out, or create, company no longer able to discern the difference between healthy and unhealthy behavior, or competently judge the difference.

@tirips, Your coercive attempt to confuse the rejection of unhealthy behavior with wrongful discrimination based on race is not only manipulative, it is repugnant. That you would make such a twisted comparison, or try to manipulate others in this way, is reprehensible; you should be ashamed. Only someone incapable of higher reasoning and/or intentionally deceptive would attempt to justify homosexuality on the basis of animal behavior.

Sex is a biological reproductive function. In some animals, there is also a secondary emotional bonding component; however, the primary function remains reproductive. Natural reproduction is impossible through homosexual activity. From an objective biological standpoint alone, this makes homosexual behavior firmly irrational in nature and very un-Darwinian. Since it results in inferior survival capability for any organism requiring sexual reproduction, it will NEVER result in biological selection.

NO animal exhibits EXPLICITLY homosexual behavior; this is an exclusively human perversion. That said, there are animals that do on occasion resort to same gender sexual activity. Some animals exhibit homosexual behavior as a form of ritualized aggression to establish dominance for mating rights or social status. In certain primates, homosexual behavior is related to immaturity and occurs when high hormone levels kick reproductive urges into overdrive. Reproductive opportunity may not exist at this time. Sexual urges unchecked by higher reasoning can result in acting on unproductive and self-gratifying behavior. This is similar to masturbation using a member of the same sex for genital stimulation. However, once the animal reaches sexual maturity, homosexual activity normally terminates; this is marked by an abrupt shift to heterosexual orientation.

Homosexual behavior may also result from an imbalance in nature caused by man. The stresses of habitat overcrowding and/or the unavailability of opposite gender sexual partners are contributing factors. When deprived of receptive females, domestic animals, such as bulls or male dogs stressed by high hormone levels, will sometimes attempt sexual activity with virtually anything, including inanimate objects, animals of the same gender, and even other species. However, other than man, no mammal in its natural state EXPLICITLY seeks or PREFERS same-gender sexual gratification or anal penetration; this perversity is unique to some humans.

The Bottom Line: Humans possess higher reasoning and CHOOSE their behavior; we are morally responsible for our choices. Animals, primarily driven by hormones and brain chemistry, are instinctual; they are not morally responsible. Therefore, it is impossible to equivocate the behavior of lower animals with that of humans in an effort to justify homosexuality. Animals engage in MANY unhealthy activities, such as copulation with inanimate objects or other species, murder, cannibalism, eating their own young and consuming feces. No sound-minded person would attempt to use this as a rationalization to do any of these things.

This is to every gay, straight, or bysexual visitors that are thinking of changing there mind about visiting the lovely friendly nature island of the caribbean, because of the misconduct of these to men, i think they realy wanted to have a great time, but where ever u go you should obey the law of that land and like anywhere else you pay for breaking laws,so this is not a matter racial or anti gay bashing, i believe the same would have been done if they were straight. So again i wellcome you to the nature island of the caribbean Dominica.

FINALLY…. Someone who pointed out that regardless of ‘who’ it was it wasn’t o.k.! I am not sure of any country that allows people to get that amorous in public. The people of Dominica are not really represented well in these comments. The majority are full of nothing but LOVE LOVE LOVE. This is an amazing and beautiful place to live, do not base your opinions on this story or on the hateful comments, that is NOT DOMINICA! At least it isn’t the Dominica I have come to know and love ♥

Wise comment! That way Dominica is not subject to fluctuations in tourism, avoids becoming enslaved to tourism, and is immune to letting tourism dictate national policy. Dollars and cents often have a way of overriding common sense.

I love Dominica, but I am sorry to say that the backwards mentality of Dominica and Dominicans has to change. Unless this mentality has changed, I am not going to promote Dominica at all. After reading the link below, I am stunned and shocked and ashamed of this incident.

We are definitely not the most righteous people in the world. We need to take a look at ourselves and evaluate how we live our lives: How many of us have children out of wedlock?…too many of us; how many of us have raped? how many of us are married and cheating on our spouses? We are just a bunch of hypocrites, and willing to judge people before we judge ourselves. Please do continue to remain in an unenlightened state of mine. I am creating my own boycott: I will not tweet about Dominica, write another blog about Dominica, speak about Dominica on national television in order to promote Dominica, share with my friends how proud I am to be from Dominica. All this because my ideals about human beings are not aligned with those of Dominica, and I am not supporting a country, that goes to this extreme to humiliate people based on their sexual orientation.

Good Luck Dominica, and don’t cry when you get all this backlash, and your economy continues to tank. I guess you all forgot that gay people also have parents, children, sisters, brothers and friends who travel.

    Bon chance!!!

Respectfully it doesn’t matter how many Dominicans have children out of wedlock for this story. What matters is that the men were naked and they broke the law. It’s not their country and they were visiting at a time where this whole issue is heightened. They should have shown some respect. Get into their rooms and close the windows and handle buisness. The way they’re are portryaing it is not correct. Whilst I support homosexual rights this was wrong.

Are you saying that we should allow drugs , killing and buglaries etc in our country because most of us are not living a true christian life ?

Those men ( pleaded guilty) violated the law of the land and they were charge rightfully . what is wrong with that.

Even if they were given the best treatment they would still try paint a negative picture after being charge . thats their normal behavior.

In Antigua tourist have been robbed, killed, locked up for not wanting to pay taxi fares etc ,all of which lead to some negative stories on internet , some even set up website etc but yet still the numbers of stay over visitors continue to increase on a yearly basis. with that in mind i am sure that we will continue to see improvement in dominica tourist arrival despite this little problem.

      • Anonymous
        March 26, 2012

Obviously, Dominica’s tourist count can NEVER surpass Antigua’s they have built a name for themselves for many years, and have countless Dominicans working for them in their tourism industry. Dominica is still learning the ropes of tourism and how to be great hosts. We need to do so many things that so many islands not necessarily Caribbean islands, that have similar landscape an natural beauty are doing, including making everyone feel welcome no matter what their religious, sexual, or economic backgrounds are.

I do support what you have said. Dominica is so back ward and the people that are chanting are uneducated and cannot contribute anything positive towards the upliftment of the country. Dominica on its own cannot support its economy. Why america is so powerful is simpy because they are so diversed. I am not saying that we have to condone wrong, but for christ sake look at so much stuff going on in the government, is there any investigation into any fraudulent acts. Hell know to individuals in the own privacy cannot be constituted as indecent exposure. So you are saying if i am naked in my house and someone passes and sees I can be charge. Really???????Dominica does need ambassadors out there spreading the word about it. Many of the people I come across have not even heard about Dominica (well now many of them will with this type of publicity). It is not a very popular country so, every one has a part to play to encourage visitors, no matter what they look like to visit and to spread the word about it’s natural beauty. I for one have one less thing to occupy my leisure time, that is most often spent travelling to exotic locales and writing and sharing great stories about them. Dominica came naturally because I was born there and have been visiting every year sometimes twice per year. Now I am sadly discouraged by the recent events. Good Luck!!!

Medically examine them? are u serious? are our officers/authorities crazy? that would definitely have been a violation of these ppl’s rights! Gosh, I can’t believe that officers of the law would be that ignorant of the law (SMH).I don’t uphold homosexuality, promiscuity, adultery or anything of the sort. I agree that they committed an offense against the laws of Dominica, nonetheless that doesn’t give us the right to invade their privacy. So many children, adolescents are caught up in sexual activity prior to the age of consent and we fail to show concern far less to suggest medical examination to see if they are truly engaging in such activity. Ppl, this case just proves how ignorant of global issues, low minded and self-righteous we are! Notice that I say WE because I am still truly Dominican but sometimes saddened and ashamed by the way our ppl think and behave!

The police will say anything to frazzle you to confess. I really hate the fact that people saying Dominicans are having children or promiscuous. I they’re Dominicans who live in Dominica. These men aren’t and are subject to the laws they were under. In America we who live there are subject to their laws! Everyday is an up hill battle to fit in. These men weren’t charged because of their sexual orientation, absolute garbage! They deliberately did this, then went about crying foul and pretending to be innocent. You mean on a ship of 2000 plus people they singled out these to pathetic liars just because? You all can bow and worship them, they know their actions were wrong, and frankly they should have been dealt with the same way natives would have been. By the way everytime this ship calls into port the police is there to protect the passengers from anyone harassing them, that’s their reason to be there, and they were well protected those filthy dirty liars

NEVER! (Exclude the gay bars or the gay pride celebrations)….if two consenting adults want to engage in intimacy, that is their business, they should ensure though that it is in private.. so if you go up Sulfur Springs at 11 pm, to spy on a homosexual making out, that is your problem…..if you condemn what they are doing, but yet you spy and gossip on them, then you are as guilty….they were being discrete….now because the guys went on national news we are scared and cussing our own policy makers, police and lawyers….why are we like that? My Dominica is a very poor country. You all should be very happy if five gay cruises would come into port every day. I know it would help you all tremendously. Stop the gay bashing. It makes all of you look ugly and primitive, like bush people. After all, we are in the year 2012. Most of you all commenting on the topic has experience some sort of gay tendency, either male on male or female on female. Some of your men have poked you all where they not supposed to, so give me a freaking break. Stop the hypocrisy! One more question. If you all are dying of hunger and a gay man or woman buy you a plate of food or give you some money, would you decline or accept? I didnot see them (like most I have only read about them). They admitted to indecent exposure, no one tortured them to make that admittance.

Now they are safely back in the US, they are being treated like celebrities, so they have to play down their actions and make Dominica the bad guys. They are and will continue to mislead by claiming its because they are gay. They’ve had their 15 minutes of fame and loving it,after all no one knows them from Adam, they blended in as just two gay guys. Now they are being chased by the media.

What really puzzles me, is that they would be so public with what should be behind closed doors. Gay people are so private (the ones I know). Their way of being outrageous in public, is to kiss and pinch bums. Soooooo, was this staged/were they dared. If so by who and for what reason(s)?

In a few weeks/months, the only ones talking about this will be them.

What a public relations disaster for Dominica. I am very surprised that a country that depends so heavily on tourism could have bungled this situation so bad. Have you seen the press this story has gotten? Nothing good is being said about Dominica or the handling of this situation.

It is true that the men deserved a fine, but the possibility of 10 years in jail for having gay sex in public is rediculous to say the least. I am not gay but I believe in human rights and dignity for all. I am also against radical religious beliefs including religiously sanctioned homophobia or any phobia against any type of person. They may have deserved a fine, but things need to be kept in perspective.

Dominican authorities should have intervened in a discrete manner, put these individuals under house arrest in a hotel (at thier expense) pending trial, instead of in a bug infested cell with no water or toilet. They should not have ridiculed them or taunted them, and they should have discouraged the crowds from over reacting. In the end this issue would simply have been a case of improper behavior met with a well deserved fine and an esvort off the island. But instead, this has now resulted in very bad publicity for Dominica.

Even tourists like myself, who are not gay, will think twice about visiting, because if something so simple can be blown so out of proportion and into such a mess, we can only imagine what would happen if we made a mistake.

Hotel? Do you guys in the states put people under arrest at a hotel pending trial? I mean I know for a fact that many who’ve committed a crime in the US will sit in jail for days and after three or four court appearances may get an ankle monitor and placed under house arrest. Have you seen the United States Jails? I’m not talking about their prisons but their actual holding cells. All you need to do is be a public defender or have a relative in there or be in there yourself to experience the filth.

At least we provide the basic necessities of life, food, water and allow for proper hygeine. Prisoners are also protected from being harrassed, especially by those who arrested them. What the authorities did amounts to mental torture. I would have pled guilty to any charge that would have allowed me to pay a fine and get the heck out…who knows how much worse it would have gotten. Furthermore in this country you are innocent until proven guilty…appears not to be the case in Dominica.

The truth will never be known. Everyone assumes to know the facts. Fact is they were “charged” with buggery and plead to a lesser charge to get the hell out of such a horrible experience. No evidence, short that someone saw something (and people lie, which there was plenty of reason to do such in this case given the hatred for gays by many on the island). Plenty of people plea to something they did not do in order to get out of situations that could drag on…this made sense…it will not go on their record in the states…this way it is behind them. Fact is the day before the ship arrived there was already a stir on the island because a gay ship was arriving, per the news. Again per the news those disembarking were met by protests, insults and derogatory comments. Shame on Atlantis Cruises for putting their guests in such a situation, they should have spent the day at sea. We will never know the truth of what happened. The one Truth that has come out is that Dominica will go down in the travel books as an intolerant island…go ahead comment and hate away, hide behind how holier you are and how you are a godly island but the facts stand, those representing Dominica have spoken and shown their true colors to the world.

This is for the one who calls himself/herself Peeping Tom!

You are an idiot, no wonder your name is peeping tom, your name proves that you are a punk!

Sue who, how can they sue the government you fool?

They came to our country and broke our sodomy laws, there is no excuse for what they have done, they thought they ware visiting a primitive country, where the people are so backward, and ignorant, that we would let them ” Mr. White man ” violate our laws, and as in the days of slavery the nation would bow, and say yes masser what you did is okay with us as long as you spend your money in our country, it is okay.

You idiot; you cant even think for a moment that what they did was simply challenging the authority of our of our country.

The minute they were arrested, the news went international, never before Dominica made it into international news headlines that quick, you are so dumb you cannot see this was something planed, but you are turning on your own self, and country in favor of those people who are demonically possessed came to your country disrespected you, and here you are talking nonsense about suing your government.

    What an idiot you are!

When one breaks the law in America, the minute you are arrested you automatically loose all of your rights.

If the police who arrested you is suspicious of some disease or even if they suspect you are drunk, they subject you to an breathalyzer, once you are locked up; just for the hell of it they can order you to take an aids test, or even subject you to submitting to a DNA test, depending on the crime you commit.

I will tell you this; if during your arrest you are talking and spitting, you will be subjected to having a damn plastic bag placed over your head you see.

These two people are homosexuals, in a case like this the police in Dominica had the right subjected them to take an aids test to see if they are a danger to our society okay; so shut up you idiot, if they sue the government who’s lost is it?

    Yours mine, and every Dominican.

Go and find a damn job, or read some books, pay for tutoring to learn to read or something and stop making yourself a damn fool.

They insulted you me and all of us Dominicans, with their filthy act, Dominica is not Sodom. nor Gomorrah, and the fact that the police did their work in this case, perhaps it has nor registered internationally that no homosexual is going to take our country down to that level.

People get arrested for Jay walking in America, that is crossing the streets in the wrong place without using the cross walk, never mind having homosexual sex in public!

Because they are Americans, that does not give them the right to break our laws!

It’s amazing that the Discover Dominica Authority is silent on this matter, the Minister for Tourism is silent on this matter.

We have other countries like Barbados, Jamaica, etc saying that they do not want the cruise ships to come to their shore, but since we are so desperate we accept anything. Tourism means more to countries like Barbados, than they would ever mean to us, so why has Barbados stood their ground?

Employees are being paid huge dollars at Discover Dominica Authority. Some barely have cxc’s and are getting paid more than medical officers on the island. Is that what we’re paying these exorbitant salaries for?

They need to find ways of improving tourism on the island and stop digging in the trash of the other islands.

Government needs to find well trained persons who knows what they are about to develop this tourism business in Dominica. Unless this happens, we will be seeing a repeat of things like that and much more in the future.

The mindset of the criminal colonialists is that Mother Nature should be ignored, and cultures of the planet should be just one.

And guess what; the criminal europeans are to be the ones to decide that one culture for the entire planet.

So if europeans are into stirring the filth of others, then the rest of the planet should bend over and accept that culture of nastiness as a so-called ‘human right’.

Well the wiser and more mature peoples of the planet have ALWAYS known such deviant and perverted behavior, as filth-stirring, to be a HUMAN WRONG!
And they aren’t going to bend to the pale homosexual perverts.

Mother Nature designed the planet specifically for multiple cultures.

If one leaves his indigenous space, then one MUST BE prepared to adjust and accommodate to a cultural change, in the same way that any wise traveler would adjust and accommodate to the different climatic conditions around the planet.

Stir filth in European countries if you are that lost, ignorant and deluded.
However, but keep the decadence in European countries.
Otherwise a rude awakening WILL ALWAYS await abroad.

After all, EVERY OTHER PEOPLE on the planet have and expectation to adjust to a new culture when they travel abroad?
So who died and make europeans masters of the planet? Such ignorance, arrogance and delusion are always going to be rebuffed!

Why are so many people pretending that this is the first gay cruise? While I do not condone homosexual behaviour I am not God and judgement belongs to him. I would like however, to contend that it is not the homosexuals which caused the stir, it was the fact that these two men conducted the act publicly. Dominica has homosexuals. If we didn’t why would Black Diamond sing one of 2012’s most popular calypsos “Pit Toilet”? We need to be less hypocritical and stop pretending that this behaviour is not silently condoned in Dominica. Is it because many of the homosexuals are in high places that we only remember it is a crime when a gay ship comes to Dominica? I want to ask one question and rest my case. Aren’t places like sulphur spring and most of our beaches considered public? So when some of our men are caught in hot water under the cover of darkness with their male partners this is not public misconduct too? Dominicans we need to be less hypocritical and condemn all homosexual activity. Permit me one last question. I wonder, had it been two women would our male public react the way they did? Just asking.

    • Pan African Muslim
      March 24, 2012

Interesting points raised. To address some of your questions, if two men are caught “under the cover of darkness” it means they intended to hide. This is the intent of the law. Secondly, it would be impossible to condemn two men of buggery under the cover of darkness because you would have to witness anal penetration. Thus this issue is invalid.

Secondly, you are right, the Dominican particularly male audience would be turned on by two females having sex but all these activities as you mentioned should not be tolerated because whether bi, straight or gay these forms of heavy petting whilst being completely naked is absolutely unlawful.

Thus I wouldn’t give you a thumbs down because you raised some interesting questions. In fact I give you a thumbs up for raising them.

Permit us to respond in this way to your questions. Regardless to the perception of turning a blind eye to like behavior (if what you assert is true) when observed. In Dominica, public indecent exposure and sodomy is still against the law. We all know (not that we agree) that the law is selective in who it pursues and how it is enforced. Yet the law is the law until it is repealed.

By all accounts the gentlemen at question broke the law. They were duly adjudicated. Book closed.

    • March 25, 2012

What rubbish. Why aren’t the people involved in the tourism industry speaking out? After all, tourism is every body’s business!! So why the silence from the minister of tourism and the officials from Discovery Dominica and the local tour organisers. The world out there is asking what really happen and suddenly our Tourism officials are silent. hmm. I hope this is a lesson for all who thinks that because we are begging for crumbs they can come on our island and do what they want. To the outside reporters I say SHAME ON YOU. Gay cruises have docked our islands before, have you ever heard of anyone being arrested? NO!! so it’s very pathetic that you guys will listen and air the nonsensical garbbage and reasoning of the two men who showed gross disrespect to our country’s law and it’s people. To the people who were on the bayfront hurling insulting words to the men i say this was unnecessary. The men’s behaviour may have been a contributing factor to their behavior. Generally we are a bunch of friendly people. God bless Dominica. I am Dominica, Are you?

      • March 24, 2012

Well said as those hypocritical Dominiche’ choose the sins that they want to condemn and conveniently forget the others.

How ridiculously primitive in their thoughts and I pity them.

Dominiche’ pretend to be evolved and progressive but their method of handling diversity and equality is nothing but a laughable joke and a pantomime at best.

      • March 25, 2012

Some people seem to be confusing bible and laws. Goverment make laws and the church preach the bible.
Having sex with your kind is against the law, so to is having sexs with a ramgoat, cock, bull, or any animal. They are both in the same category. Man came form the womb of a woman, not from a man or an animal. Soon some people will be fighting to legalise beastiality. Cannot make wrong right. Think about that!

Ellen I travel often and spoke with my agent the other day about this. Unfortunately there are already ramifications in the industry. I am Gay, but when traveling don’t announce it. I do avoid places that may not be safe for me, but because a country has archaic laws does not mean it is unsafe for Gays. However, when you have members of a country insulting visitors, as occurred in Dominica, when they make a big deal out of an arrest, line the streets and parade them around…the message is to people like me…STAY AWAY. I travel to enjoy myself, not to have to look over my back constantly or choose what I disclose about my self carefully and I dare say Dominica has become one of those places I would have to be too cautious to enjoy…and my agent along with others agree. Unfortunately I suspect a large number of your visitors are Americans whose views on Gays have changed…many are supportive and this has been big news in America. Unfortunately Dominica’s largest commodity, tourism, will feel the impact of the actions of a few.

      • tirips
        March 24, 2012

Ellen, one more thing to add. Nearly 1/2 million visitors a year come to Dominica…the majority American. Between 2008 and projected through the year 2013 we will have provided financial aid in the amount of $288 million, the majority of it for health programs, especially those focusing on the children of Dominica. I am not saying American’s should be able to flaunt the laws…and I have serious doubts as to what really took place given the dislike towards Gays as was made clear before the ship even docked. But I would think a country who depends so heavily on the American tourist industry and American financial aid would have considered handling such a matter much differently. There will be fall out.

Ellen I agree with most of what you said, but leave the politics out ot it….The minister has nothing to do with that. Everybody have their department to do their work, the police have done their work, so why should the minister say anything, let the police do their work, we must not let everything that happens be the business of the politicians. They have their jobs to do and we have our lives to live, without the politicians always getting into everything that is not really their business.

        March 25, 2012

Tirips, You are so right. I am Dominican, an avid international traveler, and ashamed to say that I will no longer be promoting Dominica to friends, on national television in the US, or through social media as I have done relentlessly for the past few years. I did not realize that Dominica was such a primitive country with such primitive ways of “conducting business”.
In most of the countries that I have visited, Dominica is scores high on my list of most “immoral country”. Many Dominicans have children out of wedlock, quite a few of them are married and find it a normal lifestyle to commit adultery. There is a high incident of rape and incest on the island, so why are they pretending to be the most righteous country, when they are all so guilty of SINS, that many including myself frown on. They have all become desensitized to their lifestyle, and who are we to judge.

What they did not realize was that these gay people have friends, parents, sisters brothers, and others who they will gladly talk negatively about Dominica to all who will listen after being treated like animals. One of the things about gay men that resonates strongly with me is that they are scorned like women, with the power of men. The tourism industry better line up some great PR firms (hopefully not headed by gays) to see how they can try to remedy this situation, because the backlash, boycott and bad press is here to stay. So sorry Dominica, now get back to farming your banana fields.

Dominicans tend to rally around most criminals. where have you been? didn’t you see the amount of people around the peeps who killed their bro. what about issa alleyne he had to flee the country after they threw out his case ******************and justice needed to be served. but i’m sure he can return now since most have forgotten. In any case this was a disaster from a PR standpoint and the police couldn’t have handled this situation much worse. We aren’t exactly gay tollerant here but we’re not Jamaica who chases after them with cutlasses/machetes either. If you act reserved your pretty much safe from anything on any public street on the island.

but it seems like they were being harassed in the cell too by other cell inmates who were close by… at least that’s what i understand…couldn’t the police have done something then

they were taunted all night long….by criminals….by lowlife criminals…..the police encouraged it ….

      • T. Winston
        March 24, 2012

I ask you to go to an american prison and see if they’d separate you from the other inmates. We’ve all know that there’s always some a-hole in the cell who want’s to show he’s the biggest dog in the yard. the weak looking ones will always be picked on. Don’t do the crime and you won’t end up there. The police have no responsibility to make a prison stay seem luxurious… The police did their jobs because at the end of the day for an “anti-gay” “negroe-island” “small-minded” “pagan society” “low class” “hateful” “bigot” country like Dominica. These men left the country without a scratch. They were never touched inapropriately, never sodomized and never harmed. yes they were scared and I’m sorry for that. Sincerely I am. However the things I’ve read that have been said are hard to stomach from people who are asking for acceptance. If you want acceptance the best way isn’t to degrade the people you want to accept that. I would like the first gay activists to have taken that approach in the states when they just started asking for gay rights. I guarantee you he’d have probably been lynched like black people or at the very least… shot like Trayvon Martin was.

Surely you Dominiche’ can have educated and unbiased discussion on subjects, without walking down the party political lane, which is a sign of an evolved, progressive society.

On the subject of “Arab Spring”, once again is totally not in the right context here, as first and foremost if your country were a dictatorship as you so ridiculously eluded to, then you certainly wouldn’t have the freedom to speak or comment on anything, especially the subject of homosexuality on a blog such as this.

Hence you your country isn’t a dictatorship and you know it, I know it, and so do the United Nations and international community.

I am not sure what you were expecting during your detainment, but imprisonment does not mean Club Med. I am not judging you, but I will say that your actions were deplorable. You gentlemen demonstrated symptoms of exhibitionism and were blatantly disrespectful to yourself, your fellow cruisers and the entire Dominican nation. I don’t care if you are gay, straight or bi-sexual, all sexual activities such as the acts you displayed so freely should be conducted behind closed doors. Know that if you were a heterosexual couple you would have met the same fate, and for the same reasons, so please don’t make this about discrimination because of your sexual orientation. Instead of trying to garner sympathy, you should man up to your mistake and issue an apology to the people of Dominica.

It might b normal in the States but it’s against the law in DA..Maybe they were not aware of the laws here, but this incident might help them control their sexual acts whenever they visit a foreign land..

      • March 24, 2012

For your information, any blatant sexual acts in public are NOT OK in The United States. Whether they be gay people or heterosexual. And, by the way, have you been to Carnival lately? The only thing different about “that” action, is clothes … otherwise, it’s sex in public – but it’s called “Culture” in Dominica and not only is it acceptable, it’s encouraged (even for children)!!! For a country that views sex as a competitive sport, I find the outrage out of place.

The woman holds a Masters Degree from London for you information. That’s a personal friend of mine. What irks me is that these people talk about equality and instead of trying to change things all their comments are hateful slurs filled with degrading terms laced with malice. Gays want rights and understanding yet come to a country break the law (regardless whether you think it’s primitive or not, America used to have the same laws and in some states still do.), and then when punished decide it best to degrade those who punished you. What big men you are. As for the jail situation… you’re not special everyone in the country has to go there when they commit a crime that isn’t anti gay that’s poverty so get used to it. we don’t have a 5 star hotel for a prison. The police were misguided in allowing dozens of people to obviously come look at you and the magistrate was unprofessional in her closing comments. However fighting “underdeveloped” by being biased only serves to strengthen the logic that you don’t deserve leniency. I mean we don’t have a train station or even an international airport yet while the US had all these things they were still anti gay. You don’t complain about the conditions we are in, the poverty, lack of jobs, political divide or even or lack of proper medical facilities. Yet because you were charged with a crime (and if this were a witch hunt you would still be here facing more charges spending more money), You think the best thing to do is bash the country and expect improvement… I pity you

What defense would you have used? You both were not exposed it was a body painting painted on both of you that that you both appeared naked?

In my view, if there were more than 4 witnesses who saw actual sexual penetration in public and it was medically proven then you should have gotten the full extent of the law. If it was heavy petting then you both should have been charged a higher fee. I would charge both of you US$10,000 each. I think the judge was too lenient.

Lastly, I hope both will learn a lesson thus respect the jurisdiction of other countries. You or your family and friends do not have to come to Dominica. You will surely not be missed! God will replace people like you who bring nothing but disgrace to our shores.

Maybe the reason why the statements by your lawyer were absurd, ridiculous illogical etc. is because they could not find any other way to defend you all since you all were clearly guilty of the charges, and don’t forget that your charged were reduced to indecent exposure. You should consider yourself lucky, because the Dominican justice system was in your favor before you even went to court. When I travel to other countries, even when I am in transit, I am informed of what can and cannot and will NOT be accepted in other islands and countries. I have no choice but to abide, if I do not want to find myself in trouble with the law. I could not take part in any type of sexual activity with my husband in public, anywhere in the USA, or the world for that matter, and think that I would not be arrested. We are a country just like any other part of the world and we have the right to enforce our laws. We, Dominicans welcome all tourists, we just ask that everyone acts within the law, and there will be no problem.

Gentlemen, I hope that you are who you say you are just in case that its really you. We do not hate Gays, we dont judge you for your sins thats God’s Job. You do not have the right to come to my country and expose your sinful abomination. Thats unaceptable. What would you have liked your attorney to say in your defense that the two of you were just walking to the pool and you bounced each other on the way or better yet use the example of a Dominican who told the court that a Cow reversed on him and their sexual organs met quite by accident. Listen and listen well, we are a small developing country BUT we have principles that are not for sale or compromise. There was no way you could have explained your situation better but you now hitting your defense attorney. YOU HAD NO DEFENSE YET OUR LAWS AFFORDED YOU TWO THE LUXURY OF ONE OF OUR BRIGHTNESS LAWYERS. Please understand this, the Commonwealth of Dominica WILL NEVER compromise on its laws against homomsexuality and if you wish to go to hell enjoying this act then do so but when you come here dont do your nastiness here. the same laws aplly to locals who are gay, same treatment, the laws of our land MUST be respected and enforced and it does not matter who you are and where you sail from and what you bank accounts say. PLEASE RETURN TO ENJOY OUR LAND AND ON THAT OCCAISSION BEHAVE YOURSELVES.

I ain’t against guy people.I work with a lot of gay men everyday and I find them very cheerful and easy to deal with, but there is nothing you could say to justify what you did. You guys were informed of the law. You’re in a town, kids pass by,what you did was just wrong. The comments that being made about gays i ain’t support them but you gays know it was wrong. One retired cop and off the years you’ve given to service towards law enforcement that’s what you decide to do?

That is what happens when you abuse the hospitality of the Dominican people. These men were very aware of where they were but decided anyway to flaunt their lifestyle in the faces of hundreds of people. In some parts of Africa, the outcome of the case would have been different. I am commanded to love homosexuals but not their actions! Incidentally, I live in San Francisco, a gay community “paradise”.

    And rightfully so Mr. Mayer.

You came to Dominica fully aware of our laws and…that homosexuality…even more so open homosexuality is totally against local customs.

This is not a judgement of your morality. That you have to face up for yourself.(We even accept that despite laws and customs there are homosexuals on our island). But this is about you showing total disrespect to our country by TAUNTING us with your behavior. Yes I believe what you and your so called partner did was deliberate and calculated.

I so totally agree with you. As soon as I heard this story my response was that this was done intentionally. The terrible thing is that we played right into their little game by responding hatefully. Our only response should have been to stand behind the decision of law enforcement officers, the ministry of tourism should have issued a statement affirming our stance on homosexuality and leave these two men in their story. What people fail to realize is that gay cruises have docked here before, none of this garbage ever happened. The men did wrong and the country is being penalized…utter rubbish

Great point. Exactly what I alluded to in my post above. They were deliberate and calculated. They wanted to rub it into our faces. Typical drama queens. And it’s exactly because of that kind of behavior from the drama queens is why we can’t tolerate gay people.

You know what? These men had a purpose when they landed in DA. They wanted to prove a point and provoke the public because they’re American and nobody could touch them. Why did they choose DA of all the places their shipped docked into to display that behavior? Dcans, ask yourself a question. Why were they the only 2 people who were arrested? In America, they would have faced the same or even harsher penalties. Fine Hart and Mayer, you think DA is so bad, then please keep your fannies in America. But the cruise line will STILL return to the country and you’ll have lots of gay men having positive experiences in DA because they will choose to act civil and respect the country. SO go on! Go ahead and spew your venom. You will make the mistake of taking a cruise or visiting another country and breaking their laws and you BOTH will meet a worse fate because you are rude, disrespectful and liars.

Good! Now you all will spread the word that while we welcome everyone to our shores, no one will be allowed to break our laws with such reckless regard. You can do whatever you want in the privacy of your bedroom but behaving in such a manner is not only dispicable but also insulting to us as a christian people.

I will still blame the government for KNOWINGLY allowing a gay cruise into our country. No one says that the government should investigate the sexual orientation of would be visitors, but the govern was fully aware that the tourists were all gay. We cannot be so hungry in Ddominica that we will stop at nothing just for a few dollars.

Where has morality gone? While a little BUG- HER will not Dominica, we cannot allow such immoral behaviour to be imposed on us and our children. Yes we have gay folks in Dominica but I have never seen or heard of them behaving in such a manner. Hats off to the police for a job well done. Now its time to move forward with other “high profile” cases that continue to rub the conscience of our beloved nation. Justice should never be selective or blind

Why should the government stop the gay boat from entering? Are you saying that we are a communist country? Stop always blaming the government for everything, they cannot stop boats from coming to our ports. Every boat that comes here have gay people all the time, they do not want them to display this kind of behavoir in public. If you feel so strongly about it, why don’t you do the same and see if you will not be arrested, at least you will be able to prove your point.

Pam African Muslim…there is a saying “The pot calling the kettle black.” It applies here. Before passing judgement on America Culture take a good look at your own country, Dominica, and its problems. Not saying America is any better but Dominica has its issues just as America does; let us worry about our country, you worry about yours. And if you don’t want outsiders coming in and corrupting your people then I suggest you run for office and shut down the tourist industry that Dominica depends on. I suspect you have a deep hatred for our country from your posts, unfortunate that you have such a small mind. For what reason??? Because the police officers upheld the law of the land?? Be realistic. I wish everyone would understand that the men were arrested not for being gay but because of their conduct in public…That is what you should frown upon. Secondly, just because you are a part of something doesn’t mean that everybody else has to appreciate it. Thirdly, this is not the first gay cruise to dock here and an incident has never occurred prior to this. The men came, enjoyed the beauty of the island and left, no one was injured or discriminated against. These two however, broke the law of the land and are now searching for sympathy and are painting a very terribly wrong image of our island

Most of you jump off bridges , shoot ureselves etc. You get bullied and you damn sure is limited to certain things . For example not being able to join the army based on your sexual orientation. I bet you could have lived in dca being gay and have a much better life than you do here in the u.s . All the people asked was for you not to display public affection*nudity* whatever the case is . If America wants to wipe out something they should start with their view on lil countries. Y come to a country and only take out pictures of broken down houses and sop forth making the country look like it is incapable of soo many things .at least dominicans didn’t treat the gays like you treated the arabians who wanted to open up their place of worship couple blocks away from the 911 site. I can name a list of soo many things that go on in america that is worst off than what happened here . From racism to racial profiling too everything . Whilst I support people’s rights to chose and be merry, I also like to have the playing field fair and square. So in defense of my country’s actions, I’d like to point out the below incident in California not even past year yet:

Will Walters 30 an a gay american who was arrested in San Diego gay pride parade for violating nudity laws by appearing practically naked on July 2011. Google it!

My Dominicans are got their issues but they’re not crazy as many would have them seem. Thankies!

These guys will now try to benefit from their “bug-hering” ways. They will be on all these talk shows and morning shows saying how the were mistreated in DA…I hope that these shows will not entertain the B.S. Then again, they might. In the US they protest against prayer in school, fine stations for the accidental exposure of one nipple(Janet Jackson incident), yet the promote two man kissing on sitcoms.

Tell me if their is not somethen wrong with this picture…I am pretty sure that they were not subject to any treatment other than the normal treatment of someone who is arrested for breaking the law.

You sleep with Venezuela (US REALLY DOESN’T LIKE THAT). You have warnings from UN Human Rights Council. The islanders have laws that violate human rights. The islanders need to fix their own problems instead of wanting a handout. Shame on you! USA is watching you very carefully. As US citizens, we are ALL watching you.

    disgusting.

if you expose yourself indecently & inappropriately in public – you should be put in jail & if children happen to see you in your perverted state, then you should be added to the sex offenders register.

the topic of debate here should not be the homosexuality, public displays of which are illegal according to the laws of Dominica, but instead it should be the fact these morons think it acceptable to expose themselves in public.

Nasty, perverted individuals, who were let off with a $2400 EC dollar fine, have the nerve to say their experience here was ‘horrible’. Well our experience of your ‘stay’ on the island was despicable, and nothing short of perverted.

In america women get arrested for breastfeeding thier infant in public yet these two degenerated ahve the gall to criticise Dominica’s criminal justice system.

America is a place where men are profiled based on thier colour every day. Blacks are routinely shot in america for being black and no one criticises them.

These guys are very provacative and dishonest. They conducted thier perverse act publicly on a dominica port in full view of dozens of local spectators as well as fellow cruise patron.

They were rewarded with a slap on the wrist by the courts. If this act was donw in califonia they would get 5 years prison for public indecency.

“I’ve never seen people chanting and protesting in the street. It was amazing.” They must have come from an other planet. Just maybe there is another name for what was happening at the time

  185. Anonymous
    March 23, 2012

Dear tourist: please remember that a gay cruise visiting any island would call for protest or as you call it chanting. Dominica was not the only Island CHANTING @ you guys. You simply got caught with your pants down in public and i know that you knew well of the laws. Actually this law is practice everywhere. If you were caught with your pants down in public in America the punishment would be more severe and yes you would be paraded on national television. Yes some of the people on the islands are small minded and have no clue about gay men but simply know the name maco. So give the chanting people a break cause if you were in Jamaica then your winny would be chopped off.

    March 23, 2012

Hmmmm, as far as I can see, is that they were charged for INDECENT EXPOSURE and not anything stating SEXUAL ACTIVITIES…..hmmmmm. Why would they want to now examine them to see if they were having sexual activity when they first of all charged them for such? Something is not right here. There is a flaw somewhere in this matter. Did the witness or witnesses had their say in court?

    • IS IT TRUE
      March 24, 2012

The question should be what did the witness/witnesses see. I know my country ppl and the like to make an issue out of nothing. And they always with that “I hear”. When you trace back the “I hear” the original story came from I hear.

Were these ppl actually having sex or buggery (whatever) or were they kissing up and foundling. I heard Matt on Thursday morning saying “Oh a doctor told me” What did the doctor tell you Matt and does that mean it is true because a doctor told you.

If they were having sex on the balcony then they are dead wrong but do not expect a ship with guys to come to your shores and you wont see them making out.

    March 23, 2012

Well what did you all expect?

It would be obvious that as soon as they were safely out of Dominica and the international press descended on them that they would turn on Dominica big time.

This first report is just from their arrival in Puerto Rico. Wait till they get home to California and the networks start to make them famous. Sad…but “that is how the cookie crumbles” as the saying goes. We were caught between a rock and a hard place.

What voice does little Dominica have against the international media? Watch the drama unfold….and watch the tourism figures slide. Watch the other Caribbean islands say “We are not like Dominica and Jamaica, we are Gay Friendly! Come and visit us instead”. Man this thing bigger than you think.

They are right about it! Who do they blame for their inhumaine treatment when they behaved worse than animals in foreign land. They would not have done that anywhere in the US. In fact you cannot put your private out in the US far less to have open sex in the public. I have seen people charged in the US for pepeeing in the public.
The problem is, not only did these guys behave like animals but worse than animals because you dont see two male animals having sex. What they did was nasty, dirty and frankly, they had an agenda. So we should have charged them $5000.00 US each and on top of that, ban them and their gay boat, from our shores.

This aunt-man is talking about horrible, those two spices of subhuman garbage should be serving time in Jail for breaking the sodomy laws of our country!

What the can KTLA do to Dominica, Bull-pooping is not tolerated in the open anywhere in America, certainly not in California, where KTLA operates in Los Angeles, and where I resides, not even in San Francisco where the most punks resides, they do not violate the laws, and have sex in the streets.

Why do these garbage people believe we should tolerate their filth?

When a person become a prisoner, by arrest or incarceration in this country (America), they are treated as a criminal, they are treated horribly , even when the Federal Government are transporting prisoners via air, they chained them hands and feet twenty and thirty thousand feet in the sky in that aircraft.

When the county Jail house buses are filled with prisoners going to make their court appearance, and are taken back to jail, they are chained hands and feet to some object in the bus, that is horrible too.

That punk thought he would get some special kind of attention from our police because he is a damn homosexual!

Man you are out of your mind!

Homosexuals not honored in America, why do you believe we an intelligent God fearing nation would have appreciated you vile and disgusting conduct in our country?

To hell with you and KTLA!

We do not entertain, nor do we have gay,or anti-man rights in our country!

They broke the law they paid the price….they made a public spectacle of themselves by having sex on deck in view of the public’s eye. On the other hand, Dominicans should have handled the situation better. It seems like little incidents creat so much uproar in Dominica it’s a damn shame. The authorities themselves need to parade these little indiot criminals we have walking around the streets on a daily basis. The same monkeys, that rob and kill people and are out on the streets again in a few years. Hey, I have family members who are police offices and these dudes joined the force and sudden became unreasonable a$%^&*…..The law was enforced as written but there are bigger issues that could have made international news……smh

That’s so dumb..People now a days have some serious issues…That’s why some of them like to mind a lot of people business….Them people having sex on the deck let them have sex, they not raping you, they not touching you, just pass them straight, that’s why a lot of Dominicans just can’t live in the States…This is why they have to keep their little **** in Dominica… :!: :-x

My visiting tourist friends…. If you want to see lewd behavior as they are calling it…come during carnival next year and see the girls with their privates hanging out and the men smashing up against their bums… But…… it is ok during carnival, it’s a free for all. So do your research and come here during the time when all the people who are saying it is against god, what you did, have no morals.

“No light, no water, no toilet,” he said, describing the conditions. “We were taunted all night long. They paraded us around like we were some oddity.”…This is as he said inhumane…

  204. Pan African Muslim
    March 23, 2012

The people of Dominica need to make up their minds. According to the first article of the constitution it acknowledges God as the supreme of the land. If “buggery” is a crime against the state the same should apply to fornication and adultery. We see that fornication and adultery is “okay” but “buggery” is a crime.

It’s either the people of Dominica legalize “buggery,” fornication and adultery or regulate their laws to punish for homosexuality, fornication and adultery.

These guys talk about inhumane conditions and they may be right, however, we hope for the time being it will teach people whether native or foreigners that they cannot do as they wish in this country. Though in my view the justice system is unjust and crooked there are laws and people ought to respect the laws of the land.

Lastly, we should really improve the conditions of our cells and prison system. It needs to be more of a correctional facility rather than some dehumanize place.

    • Shameless
      March 24, 2012

Shut up you hypocrite! Islam is your religion and that of the middle east where buggery is paramount among young unmarried men. Matter of fact, the young women are well known to be sexually active by BUGGING-HER while preserving their virginity for marriage. Hymen replacement surgery is one of the booming businesses in countries like Dubai, Qatar, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. So just chill

WOW ! Did they really have to jeer at the men like they have never seen gay people before. Really ? And I agree re the inhumane way that our prisoners are treated in Dominica it is ridiculous and for that we should be brought in the international arena. I am an attorney and worked in criminal law and I know. I almost fainted on having seen some of the cells in the country stations.

Good for the authorities, them marcos darn right. If you guys had apply the law and prosecuted them two like you all were supposed to, they wouldn’t be out there bad talking Dominica now. They would be in jail begging for mercy.

It is good to know that justice isn’t blind in Dominica; justice is very selective. The two should have been charged with buggery and let the DA decide. If they were arrested for cocaine, there is no way you all would have let them go already no matter what the outside world say.

The authorities main interest was in appeasing the outside world. Shame on all you man.

I hope the next time a perpetrator is arrested, he will receive selective justice too.

This is so sad, I agree that these men should have been charged with indicent exposure, but to be paraded around in public, and making such a scene is embarassing. We leave in a world were this is commonn, and even though I do not approve of this life-style, I believe in human rights. Why were they kept in such poor conditions, and why are we still treating people in jail in an inhumane manner. Gays are everywhere, even in our own backyards, and I would like to see them come out and everybody know they are gay, than to have them leave on the down-low. well well….I knew this was going to happen…..now Dominica is going to be blacklisted by the gay community and what not……I am okay with that because a man should not sell his soul for a piece of gold…..tourism is vital in sustaining Dominica’s economy. However, tourist need to respect the laws of Dominica. If they were indeed treated inhumanely, that is unfortunate, and it should be brought to light……for some reason I am not surprised these men are spilling their guts to the media here in the US….next thing you know they (gay community) will want us to compromise our laws and moral values to accommodate their lifestyle…..

  233. me
    March 23, 2012

Well THAT sure is gonna make Dominica seem like a nice, civil place!

Don’t say the gay men asked for it.

If what they said is really true, people around the world (especially in America) are going to wonder why the hell those conditions even exist.

  234. really
    March 23, 2012

Well, we all know that our jail conditions here are horrible. No surprise there.

If they were arrested anywhere else for indecent exposure it would have been just as horrible.

Interestingly, DNO i am assuming that neither of them denied to KTLA that the incident happened???

And to me that is what is important. Dominicans need to stand proud that they were in the right, that the police acted within the law.

  235. March 23, 2012

    Good! Don’t come back!
