Giant plastic bottle lost somewhere in Caribbean

The giant plastic bottle is lost somewhere in the Caribbean

A publicity stunt set up by a Norwegian soft drinks company appears not to be going well after a 30-foot plastic drinks bottle, which was released into the Atlantic Ocean mid-March, went missing.

Meant to be the largest message in a bottle, which was being tracked by satellite on its journey across the Atlantic to the Caribbean to promote the soft drink, the bottle is drifting in the sea somewhere in the Caribbean.

The bottle is bristling with technology. Besides its own twitter account (@solosoftdrink) it comes with state-of-the-art tracking equipment allowing fans to follow its progress across a world map online, along with a 360 degree camera taking photos every eight hours.

But after heavy sun storms last week, the satellite connection is down and the company, for the moment, is not able to get updates on the bottle’s whereabouts.

“We are asking people in the area to be vigilant and notify us with any information,” Joakim Sande, CEO of Solo, the soft drink company behind the project, said on Wednesday

Once the bottle has been dragged to the coast and contact has been made with the person who found it, a team will leave Norway for the location to set up a celebration party, Sande said.

The giant bottle was released in ocean currents off the shore of Tenerife, Canary Islands on 15.

It was expected to cross the Atlantic in 70 days, but it has taken more than 150 days so far and the bottle has still not washed ashore.

Maybe it might wash ashore in Dominica, who knows?

Are they certain that it is lost in the Caribbean? How do they know? Did they get a radar signal from it being in the Caribbean?
It may be in Iran or Iraq or the likes for that matter. If this is where it ends up, say goodbye to it. A war may rage over this plastic bottle if it is found in unauthorized waters. All the same it would be interesting if it is found and finds its way to the Caribbean. It would be a feat performed.

yea right… first off its just drifting on sea… it relies on nature to get to some sort of destination…well just drifting and floating on the sea alone is a signal for sharks.. regardless if its just a plastic material, a shark must have attacked it thinking its something else, burst it and it sunk!

Most likely the technology in that thing is worth 500k USD+! Why not send an empty Float plastic bottle instead, with a simple tracking device? Gets the job done at a less risk.

‘The bottle is bristling with technology. Besides its own twitter account (@solosoftdrink) it comes with state-of-the-art tracking equipment’… it seems to be not so good technology and mapping cause if it was, you all would be able to find it…lol!

      CAN YOU NOT READ…
It also stated that due to sunstorms the satelite tracking systems are down hence the reason they don’t know cuz they knew before… smh why do some people show their ignorance so blatantly.

I guess some people do not know what are solar storms and what they do to telecommunication here on earth.

      • Justice and Truth
        August 19, 2013

You expect everyone to know if they never heard or read about it. Furthermore they are not in the telecommunications field. You cannot expect them to know everything. What some know others do not know and vice versa. It is no exaltation for those who know and it is not ignorance on the part of those who do not know.

Those who give thumbs down cannot stamina the truth. It makes good sense that if their technology was so good they could have traced it and its whereabouts. I suppose that they were experimenting. It is worth a laugh though. We are anxiously waiting to hear where it will surface. Who knows? It it did not sink never to be surfaced, we may get a surprise where it could be spotted or where it lands. Interesting!

I am an avid news listener and reader. I have not yet heard this one on the Canadian/Toronto news. If it was broadcasted, did I miss this news?
They knew its intended destination but they do not know what destination it took. Who knows? It may have changed course or probably sank or is floating somewhere in the world. It may show up in Canada, US or Europe, probably from now to 50 years or more. It should be real treasure for those who find it. The finder should receive a reward and for returning it to the original sender.
Further thoughts, if someone in those countries finds it, the media and the government will surely know about it. The government may keep it to scrutinize and test it for possible intelligence and security information. You know, finders keepers.

Some people do not know the difference in a sensible writing, sometimes a jovial one and the opposite to them.
Some nuts always give some sensible comments thumbs down. They excel in doing this wicked deed. Their comments are not usually educating, inspiring and enlightening.
Why not say and do something good for a change, giving compliments where they are due? It would bring much needed inner happiness and peace of mind. There would be no room for complaints and adverse comments which get them nowhere.

All of this is publicity and marketing. Maybe they are trying to increase their presence in the Caribbean market…that story of a missing bottle would be a great way to get our attention. Enough of the soft drinks already.

Sorry DNO but Tenerife where the bottle was released by the Norwegian company is in the Canary Islands in the North Atlantic and not in Norway. Please correct this line, “The giant bottle was released in ocean currents off the shore of Tenerife, Norway on 15.” And by the way I hope this stunt by this company backfires and people boycott their drinks because the Atlantic already has a serious plastic pollution problem. I do not care how much technology is in this plastic bottle , the Atlantic and by extension our Caribbean Sea does not need any more plastics thrown into it – even for this kind of gimmick marketing of a soft drink!
