The financial woes of the Grotto Home for the Homeless (Community Hostels Inc.) have been lessened as it becomes the beneficiary of more financial assistance courtesy of the government.

The government had committed $120,000 to the institution and out of that $40,000 have already been received. The assistance will go toward the construction of the new Grotto Home and Bellevue Rawl.

Speaking at Home’s annual general meeting at the Fort Young Hotel on Monday prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, promised at the end of the working day, more assistance will be received.

“I am saying to you before the end of the working day, you shall receive an additional $40,000 to continue the project and by next Wednesday, God’s willing, you will receive the other  $40,000 to complete the $120,000 that was committed,” he stated.

In addition to the Skerrit is promising $30,000 annually to meet the institution’s operating costs.

“I am giving a commitment here today that we will provide you with an additional $30,000 for the next five years so that you will not have any difficulty in meeting your operating cost from time to time. So that you will not have to come to me, at my home, or at my office early morning and tell me you need money,” Skerrit pointed out.

The $30,000 will be made available within the space of two weeks since the Home is having an budget shortfall of that same amount every year.

Skerrit also reassured the less fortunate that although the economy is difficult and the country’s revenue has dropped, “like every other country in the world, we are committed to keeping the safety nets intact.”

Meantime President of the Grotto Home, Ainsworth Irish, noted that the new Grotto Home is 65-70 percent completed.

The Grotto home has been abused for years ……. The have created the sore (bobo) that exists now and now the cancer has spread they now coming to the dying patient to offer condolences.
The Skerrit lead government should be charged for negligence and abuse of public funds, and the continuous abuse of vulnerable people and their families.
The social services minister is also culpable for neglect and allow for years for Skerrit to just run into these care homes and just offer money as these services, the care, the welfare of these clients are below par and we should alert the United Nations and the Dominica Association for the aged and Elderly to hold Skerrit and Shillingford responsible for this disaster.
Just walking in like a mad man and spewing rubbish talk are the signs of a politician who knows nothing of the professional care for these poor and vulnerable people. When was the last inspection or care assessment done of the Grotto home to check that quality care is done……?well NONE.!
So all this papyshow talk by Skerrit be advised that the professionals out there know that the PM is talking rubbish and they shake their heads in dismay…the talk is this man is “dangerous and desperate”
Skerrit is not qualified nor is he in any position to talk about care to us Dominicans…..his government is rigged with poor governance.

Parry, I would go on all four before Skeritt in order to show his appreciation for the pre general election gift. It has been months, Parry has been begging for help to assist those unfortunate Dominicans which are residence at the grotto and it would appear all his cry had fallen on blocked ears.

Since you made such a comment, you could try to organize a fundraising among your contemporaries where you reside and also to personally assist.

Agreed, but we also need more people to pay their taxes so we all benefit and will help to keep taxes as low as possible if we all do our part.

I am a Labourite – a proud one at that; but Mr. PM, please you need to get out of that “my”, “I”, and “me” kinda thing. You are part of a Government of which you are only the Leader(PM) and Finance Minister. If the rest of the Pal reps move – “you” will be no more. Let’s speak more of a team format. ‘we”, “us” and “our”

      Dear Dominican for sure

You need to excuse the P M as he is not trying to imply that the funds are his personal pot.

This mis-use of words is the result of our P M’s struggle with the English language.

The P M needs to take a break from his globe trotting escapades to focus on improving his communication skills.
