Quick action by staff at Harris Paints may have averted a major fire at the company’s headquarters.

Fire and emergency personnel, including an ambulance and fire brigade trucks, rushed to the scene on Monday morning in the Rock Away area when it was reported that a double flourescent ceiling lighting fixture started sparking, resulting in a small fire.

However members of staff quickly put out the fire and brought the situation under control.

Finance Manager John Joseph said staff used a fire-extinguisher to put out the small blaze in the ceiling of the company’s office, that lasted less than five minutes.

“We have been having fire drills for the last year or so, and everybody know what they had to do,” Joseph said, confirming that the office was evacuated after the fire alarm was raised.

Staff were mingling outside and police officers on hand when DNO arrived on the scene.

Joseph said he expected work to resume within minutes as soon as they were given the “all clear” by the company’s electricians.

They are fortunate that the fire was extinguished and there was no major damage.
This occurred all the way at Rockaway.
It leads me to state which I cannot help that sadly, a dear lady, Vernie Julien died in a fire at her home in Roseau, King George V Street which is quite close to where the Fire Brigade is located and they did not swiftly attend to this fire which was right under their noses so-to-speak. What happened? This makes me angry.
To this day, I have yet to hear of an explanation why the firemen did not quickly respond to this fire which resulted in her passing. In addition, the cause of the fire was never determined.
The government must have the firemen properly trained or an investigator to at least be able to determine causes of fires. This is badly needed in Dominica.

Good thing it did happened during working hours. This incident underscore the need to pay attention to flourescent lights, many times we see them cycling, going off and on, and pay no attention. This is when incidents like this occur.

Well, thank God nothing serious happened. We don’t want to imagine what would happen if there was a serious fire what with all the highly flammable gases concentrated in this area.
