The farming sector here has been told that there are funds now available for the rearing of small livestock such as rabbits and chickens.

Parliamentary Representative for Cochrane, Dr. Colin Mc Intyre made the remarks at the opening of the 10th Rabbit Festival on the weekend.

According to him, the funds were allocated in the recently presented national budget.

“We placed in the budget this year under the Small Business Support Unit (SBSU) funds for assistance which we can go out there to provide our young people and assisting you,” he said. “You can come to the SBSU and obtain the necessary assistance and support from government and our small business support program whereby you can raise your rabbits.”

Mc Intyre pointed out that the government has initiated a training module for people interested in cage building.

“We’ve realized that sometimes on our own we have our cages, we build them but we create problems for the rabbits,” he stated, noting that sometimes the wrong wire is used for such purposes.

“What we want to do this year as well is we are offering a module where we can train our young people in cage building and these cages will be available to our young farmers especially in Cochrane and nationally and those persons interested in raising small livestock,” the MP stated.

He said that their objective is to “empower people in terms of food security.”

Meantime Treasurer of the Cochrane Improvement Committee, Marilyn Minette, said the Rabbit festival has come a long way after 10 years and like many festivals has had their ups and downs.

“These small distractions have only served to concrete our determination to continue to produce what has become the flagship event of our community,” Minette noted.

In addition, she pointed out, 10 years in hosting the festival is a significant achievement for a small village.

“And of this we are proud,” she said.

Minette noted this year there was a record number of caterers at the festival and this shows the interest of community members and the level of ownership that the community places in the event.
