Ignorant Parking – resident

The parked vehicle (right)

A resident of Pointe Michel is complaining about alleged “ignorant” parking on the part of an unknown driver who apparently insists on double parking in the Poree residential area, putting both the resident’s car and  the offending vehicle – vehicle number PK 976 at risk “if a large enough vehicle tries to squeeze through”.

The annoyed resident told DNO that this “dangerous double parking” has been taking place regularly on weekends, and again occurred on Wednesday (May 23) night.

So he went to the nearby police station (a minute’s walk away) and asked the officer he met there to come and take a look at the situation, because he was concerned about the possibility of his car being “bruised”.

The officer advised him that he had to “make a report”.

However the resident told DNO that he explained he just wanted the officer to take a look in case an accident occurred later and he would then have to report the matter.

The officer later agreed reluctantly to come and view the alleged offending double parking.

The annoyed resident told DNO however that between 7:30pm when he contacted the police and  after 11pm when he went to bed, he saw no sign of the police, who are located next door to his house.

The man said not having received satisfaction from the police and not knowing who the driver of the “offending” vehicle was, he decided to take the matter to the media, to highlight what he considers a practice that should be discouraged.

Young men in the area who expressed support for the resident, said they were not familiar with the vehicle or its owner.

The resident says he is accustomed to parking his vehicle right next to his house, and has been surprised several times to notice vehicle number PK 976 parking alongside his car, creating an unnecessary problem.

He told DNO he was still optimistic that the matter would receive adequate police attention, and reserved the right to contact Police Commissioner Cyril Carrette if the Pointe Michel-based police fail to act to curb the practice.

The resident says he was just in time to see a man and a woman enter the vehicle at about 11:28pm and drive off – he didn’t get the opportunity to speak to the driver.

Dominica drivers are some of the worst in the world. Overtaking on corners driving fast down high streets, stopping abruptly without warning, parking and chatting while blocking roads. Pulling out without indicating … Blah bla h blah.

How more deaths don’t occur I have no idea.

The test needs to be more difficult. Less new drivers with no clue … It all start with the instructor … He has no clue either.

    Be careful ou there.

Not only in Dominica, but all across the Caribbean we find this inconsiderate driving. Its not the Driving Test that needs to be made much tougher, but rather what’s needed are more comprehensive and structured Driver Instructions, which would also take care of those Instructors who are clueless.

Double paRking is when one (1) vehicle occupies (2) two adjacent paRking spaces. Get a life people, this is ridiculous reporting. Unless the “offending” chariot is occupying the jealous one’s private space, shut the h&ll up! DNO, let’s hear more about the water spout instead. LOL!!

Let it be known that the man who is supposedly double parking is indeed from the village who lives a couple houses away. He is only parking there out of convenience as the road he resides at is being repaired. I don’t think its ignorant parking more than the person who made the complaint is ignorant and wicked. He could have asked around for the owner of the vehicle or maybe he knows who the owner is but just simply likes trouble…..smh!

PARKING BADLY WHERE EVER IT MAY BE CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS FOR MANY PEOPLE ..THINK OF THE AMBULANCE ,FIRE BRIGADE OR ANY BIG TRUCK ..TEN PEOPLE DIED NEXT DOOR TO MY HOUSE BECAUSE ONE MAN’S CAR WAS BADLY PARKED ,THE FIRE BRIGADE COULD NOT GET THROUGH ,WE COULD SEE THE PEOPLE SHOUTING ON THE BALCONY BUT THEY ALL PERISHED BECAUSE THERE WAS WAY THE TRUCK COULD PASS …WE ALL MUST THINK TWICE ABOUT SUCH BEHAVIOUR.

In Dominica it is just people driving on the road; the police take no note of those driving drunk, those wreckless drivers and those who park anywhere making it a total hastle to drive in this country. The police pass them by and say absolutely nothing! This is just the society we have become – everybody do what they please. No Law! Need I say more?

    May 24, 2012

This is it? This is the story? There has to be a bigger part to the story that comnplaining resident has not told us!

Are you telling me that the complaining resident could not have found a way to get to the owner of the vehicle instead of going to the police station or to the media? Have we lost all ability to resolve matters among ourselves? A matter as simple as this, albeit POTENTIALLY dangerous, doe snot warrant the intervention of the police or other authority, and certainly not media attention.

Come on people! Get serious about development. Development starts with our mind and our attitudes to each other. This complaint by the peeved resident is frivolous.

    • TeteMorne I from...
      May 24, 2012

Peeping, I agree with you but some people just do not get it. Why does the other vehicle’s driver park in a better spot? The question is:does he live there? He should be more considerate when parking. Why should the other driver (complaining resident) make himself uncomfortable for him/her?

      • TeteMorne I from...
        May 24, 2012

*I meant why can’t the other vehicle’s drver park in another spot.*

    • Malgraysa

“NOT inconsiderate double parking” is part of development. It’s that kind of ignorance that is holding us back.

      • Malgraysa
        May 25, 2012

Mea Culpa. I recant. I spoke before time. Looking at it closer the only offence the alleged “double parker” could be accused of would be “obstructing the traffic”, a very “skinny” charge. Guess we just have to use our common sense and be considerate.

    • real possie
      May 24, 2012

@ Peep ok what if he did and this morning u reading man died after confronting driver,u all would say he should have called the police.Every man in DA seems to have guns now the man did the rite thing.

    • Peeping Tom
      May 24, 2012

TeteMorne I from: «why can’t the other vehicle’s drver park in another spot.» I agree with you.

However, noting that the offending driver insists on parking in a manner that could possibly cause an obstruction, i would simply avoid parking my vehicle in its usual spot if space allows; probably by moving it a few feet away. Additionally, if it is not possible to move the vehicle, i would leave a note on the driver’s vehicle so that we can discuss the matter, if he wishes. If all attempts at civility fails, i then go to higher authorities (if i am so concerned of a potential scratch on my vehicle).

In a small island like ours (a big village, really), we must be more civil to each other because we easily depend on each other for support. That offending driver may very well be the person to save the complainant’s life the next day. Or, the irate resident may be the pastor who presides over the wedding ceremony of the offending visitor.

So, dialogue to resolve disputes must be the order of the day as opposed to impatience, intolerance, selfishness, and force.

    May 24, 2012

Sir/madam, i salute you on this one.If a lot of our residents would take such matters of concern to the police and the media a lot of unnecessary traffic jams could be avoided and our emergency vehicles(police, ambulance, fire and rescue) would have a much easier time navigating our narrow village roads. Some will critize you for that.I hope above all the noise and “expert” opinions, we the citizens and residents could get a solid movement started to impress upon our vehicle owners the need to avoid to all parking/no parking laws and to pay attention to the dangers associated with this practice.

  35. Dave Thomas
    May 24, 2012

Most island drivers think this is “no problem”. here on Dominica, most drivers don’t park, they “abandon”!

  36. Tiger
    May 24, 2012

I think it is a matter of who parked in their spot first. If the resident parked there first, I think the visitor should be considerate and park a few metres away to allow free movement of other vehicles. But then again, it would not be the first time our people should a lack of consideration for others.

    • May 24, 2012

I know of countries if a vehicle owner park their vehicle infront of a resident house the home owner will call the police or the city and that vehicle will surely get a ticket

Saying that whoever park first have the right, the country that i am residing this is not so if a resident do not have a driveway that parking area belongs to the home owner, if I have visitors coming to my place they cannot park in front of my neighbour’s house, they will have to search for a parking lot/parking metre where they pay for parking
What if there is an emergency in that resident where they need to use his or her vehicle

      • Tiger
        May 25, 2012

How does what you say apply to Point Michel? In a lot of large cities, you need a permit to park on the streets after certain hours. We do not have that in Dominica. This is a simple problem to solve if people are courteous to each other.

How did this become headline news?

With that being said, I feel the police here are very lackadaisical towards minor traffic infringements such as these all over Dominica, especially in Roseau. It is not necessarily illegal but can be disruptive to the flow of traffic and as the complainant rightly said, it endangers vehicles in the vicinity.

    • @WELL

“Double Parking”, that’s not double parking. Double parking occurs when two vehicles are parked directly next to each other with no space in between. If the spot is a risky one then the officers should ensure that it remains clear to avoid any un-necessaries. But if this resident is so mindful and concern, I am of the beliefe that he knows who the driver of the vehicle is. He must be looking out to see and know the driver. Good Luck
