Industrial action disrupts LIAT flights

Regional airline, LIAT is advising passengers that industrial action has been taken today (June 7) by the members of the Leeward Islands Airline Pilots Association (LIALPA).

In the ongoing negotiations for higher wages, which includes the operation of the ATR aircraft, the pilots have taken action to refuse to fly the ATR 72 aircraft until an agreement is reached.

As a consequence of this action LIAT not been able to operate flights scheduled with ATR 72 aircraft at this time.

These actions have already resulted in a number of delays and cancellations.

The following flights have been cancelled:
LI 560 from St. Vincent to Barbados
LI 300 from Barbados to Tortola
LI 301 from Tortola to Barbados
LI 512 from Antigua/St. Kitts/Tortola

LIAT strongly advise passengers to contact its Call Centre for rebooking or advice on travel.

For further information: Reservations 1-888-844-LIAT (5428). Toll Free from most destinations within the Caribbean Region: 1-866 549-5428.

Calling from The United States: 480 5582. For customers calling from Antigua: 1-268-480-5601/2 and from Other Countries and 1-246 434 5428 from Barbados.

It makes no difference. Industrial Action, or no action at all. LIAT still sucks!

over and over again people on here keep saying Liat ticket prices are high. yet its completely false. the government taxes are high. if you look on a ticket, i promise you that you will see taxes that are almost the price of the Liat fare. those taxes dont belong to Liat. In fact i once bought a ticket between Antigua and Dominica and the govt taxes were MORE than the ticket price. so start to call out the governments more and Liat less. Liat management has a big part to play in this mess.

Budman , your argument holds no water and is of little interest to the travelling public. Does not matter, who charges what. We care about what we have to pay for air travel by LIAT. It is one ticket price and it is exorbitant.

No matter what, this is another segment of society who should not be allowed to strike. Consider the inconvenience to travelers, all of whom paid exorbitantly for their seat. These people have a schedule to meet and you have grounded them and delayed them. Have a heart for the passengers.

Have a heart for the workers. That statement there is purely wicked. No matter what? Then these people should be treated like royalty. What should they do when being treated unjustly? If you were supposed to go to work for thanks and not getting paid, how long would you stay there? Slavery over right?

i understand the plight of liat pilots…..however, the pilots should not take action like this. they must understand they hurt the passengers and not the company cause we do not have another option….so when passengers re-schedule is still they that have to fly the re-scheduled flights.
passengers have connecting flights to international countries and missing those flights would make a passenger mad. who is refunding us?
liat, please have some stand-by pilots for situations such as these.
pilots, u have the right to fight for what you want but hurt the company and not the passengers.

Stop using LIAT! For some time now I have been using the far more reliable connection via Guadeloupe or Martinique for international travel.

Is there something special about the ATR72, that requires a agreement to fly it? The vast majority of LIAT pilots, if not all are caricom nationals if LIAT goes under I see many qualified caricom pilots on the ununemployment line. Inter island travel is heavily dependant on LIAT so it’s time this matter is resolved.

They charge enough for their tickets so they must have the money to pay them, no?

LIAT is a very small airline with a total seat capacity of 580. This action leaves them operational with only 5 ATR42 aircraft (48 seats in economy configuration) depriving them of 59% of their capacity (5 ATR72’s with 68 economy configuration).
Given the precarious financial position of the airline this action can not be sustained. It will force the company into bankruptcy in a very short time, which may only be delayed , even if they come to a settlement with their pilots.

Good. Then maybe they’ll be auctioned off and someone who knows how to run an airline will end up in charge of it.

Bring in pilots from Russia. President Reagan fired thousands of air traffic controllers back in the day. Don’t let these few pilots hold the Caribbean hostage.
