Kalinago bus drivers running out of patience

Kalinago bus drivers say the issue of a suitable bus stop in the city remains a major problem for them.

United Workers Party (UWP) candidate for the Kalinago Territory and bus owner Claudius Sanford said meetings with the necessary authorities have not brought any change to the situation.

He said a number of Kalinago bus drivers have been ticketed by the traffic department since they do not have a designated bus stop that would not affect the flow of traffic and pedestrians.

He is calling on the authorities to address the problem urgently.

“Bus drivers have been in negotiation with government to establish a bus stop for them in Roseau where they can provide a service to the people going in and out of town. We have gone through all the different channels in bringing solutions to the problem. The bus drivers’ patients have worn out and our bus drivers continue to suffer because they get unnecessary tickets for parking in restricted areas when they cannot find a place to park in Roseau,” he said.

Sanford said the bus drivers have met with the police, Carib Affairs and members of the Planning Division in that regard.

“Nothing has been down and I am hearing that there is a new business place going to be set up in town which is going to take the same area where we are using as our bus stop and this will affect the bus drivers further,” he said.

Sandford said in excess of $400 have been given to the traffic department to purchase paint to mark the specific area.

i think if they cld get to put all busstops out of town that wld be a dream come true. look at little antigua, they have two bus stations one on the both ends of the city, so u rarely find a bus driving into town. for those that will have heavy load, the government have enough vehicles worthlessly driving around the city. they can organise shuttles to transport pple to the bus stops. i think the sooner they come up with a solution for that overload of vehicles n no stops is the better things gonna be, and alot less stressful,
    thats just ridiculous

what we need in DA is a 3 storey bus stan built over the Roseau river. That will solve the parking problem in Roseau and we will see results – more employment, and the Government will make some much needed revenue. Thats all in the vision for development Ask the Chinese to do it for us! They possses the skills for that type of work.

Dominica has a City? Tell me more!
They are calling their area a City? I do think this is segregation from other parts of Dominica. First, the change of name and now a City? What else?
If such is the case, what about the Towns of Roseau and Portsmouth? They should be called Cities as well, the first Cities.

Alas TJLPU u seem to have a few loose screws and yet u are quickto jump on the Kalinago people. My dear, when he said city he was referring to the Roseau city not to the Kalinago Territory. My gosh……get it together!! common sense SMH

I do think you and those who call Roseau a City have a few loose screws.
Then he should make his words explicit. Roseau is not a City. It is a Town. Even progressive countries have towns. It all depends on the amount of population. I reiterate with no prejudice or discrimination since when Dominica has a City? Since when is Roseau called a City? Call a spade a spade.
You, utilize your common sense.

  17. just a suggestion
    June 2, 2011

I really sympathise with the lack of a dedicated bus stop for the Kalinago Territory but where in Town can this fit. The place is already bursting with too much traffic and for the next coming cruise season we are informed taxi drivers have to wait near the Windsor Park Stadium. This means even more traffic travelling across Roseau. I think all parties concerned have to go back to the drawing board and come up with something that works.

    • :p

      June 2, 2011

they don’t have one! Where do you want the buses to wait? On your head? We all know the city has no space… that is why he is asking for help… the necessary people need to get on board and come to a conclusion….

          June 3, 2011

i agree with u on that but it is our land as well i do believe that the government should find a way to get some of a packing space for them they are one of the biggest village in the whole country and it don’t make sense if they don’t have one

lol lol yea on his or her head> heheh. Actually the area near kfc along the river bank has been used by bus drivers of the Kalinago community and Castle Bruce for years now< the bus stop has to be moved because of the new bridge being build but a new spot has to be assigned to these bus drivers or else soon they will only be told to move…with nowhere to go

        • %%%%%%%%%%%%%%
          June 3, 2011

ok, so we move the little restaurants from along the river and we make that the busstop for the eastern villages..happens now to the restaurant owners? where do we put them? all im saying is that roseau is a small village, not enough space for everything, if we please some, others will be unsatisfied, so its impossible….maybe the caribs should stay in their reserve, encourage their ppl to open up stores, shops or what ever it is they come into roseau and get! i believe its time that they development their place…

cuz we have carib lawyers, bankers, doctors, teachers, etc and all of them want to be in roseau? encourage them to stay into the reserve…i sure wld like a carib reserve “Not” vacation….!

      June 2, 2011

Why do you have to be so stupid? I am not a supporter of the uwp, but the gentleman and the rest of the kalinago bus drivers have raised a legitimate concern. We need to have our buses parked in a more orderly way in the city. We need a central bus station. As usual we fail to plan for the future. A census is a good tool that can help us to plan for certain things in advance. Kalinago peoples representatives, planning department, public works and all others concerned must meet to hammer out a solution to this issue. The government should move with haste to remedy the general parking problems around the city.
