The bus drivers say the face many problems in the area

Bus drivers plying the Kalinago Territory to Roseau route have expressed their dissatisfaction with the relocation of their bus stop in Roseau.

Originally, the Kalinago bus stop was located near Save A Lot Supermarket in Roseau, however, due to the construction of the West Bridge, a number of bus stops in the area were relocated. The Kalinago Territory bus stop was relocated to the Baytown area, next to Raffoul, just across the China/Dominica Friendship Bridge.

However, the bus drivers said the new location is putting them and their passengers at a disadvantage.

One bus driver told DNO that they are concerned over the DOWASCO Sewage Treatment Plant nearby and the odors it gives off. He also said vagrants in the area are causing problems.

He said the bus drivers are confused by the conflicting information that they have received from the authorities. He said some are advising that they leave the area, while others said that they have no issues with the drivers remaining near the Save A Lot.

“We are trying to move back into town” he stated.

Another bus driver said since the bus stop is away from the commercial centers in Roseau, they have to drop off and pick up their passengers, putting them at risk of getting ticketed by the police.

The bus drivers said a letter of complaint on the matter was sent over a month ago, to the Roseau City Council as well as the Minister for Public Works and Ports, Senator Mirium Blanchard but so far, they have not received a response.

The Bus stop is perfect. Very cool and relaxing away from the rush in Roseau.
That’s a great permanent site for the bustop.

The first people of this land are always treated like dogs. Kalinago should be first class citizens and treated like royalty. They are a national treasure yet we always give them the scraps.

I am from the Territory and i express my dissatisfaction with the relocation of the stop from it’s previous location to where it is currently. Reasons 1.vagrants flock the area. the threat of theft becomes eminent. 2 where drug trafficking/trading all illegal activities takes place is no place for a stop. puts passengers in harms way if a trade goes wrong and violent activities occur. 3.DOWASCO Sewage Treatment Plant is nearby and the odors it gives off and dust that is blown across to the stop area every time they power wash their yard affects passenger. 4.passengers are concerned about the distance they have to walk with all their groceries while drivers are concerned about the distance they have to drive to reenter town to pick up whatever it is. it’s a head ache. lastly my opinion I believe that all the people of the Kalinago Territory got relocated in the interest or to please one man the owner of Save Alot. I say this because the area is now a parking lot for the aboved…

Just walk a few extra steps across a bridge? You don’t know what the people go thru daily. Walk across the bridge with all your shopping bags and face the heat on the bus stop and all that nasty smell. Y’all would be complaining too but becuz you are not in the situation it’s an issue that we voice our concerns. Every other bus stop is in town but the Kalinago territory bus station…why? They should have considered the distance and all the other distress. We need a new and better location !!!

This area is chaos. There are a lot of drug dealing in the area. Lots of young men come to buy drugs from a bar situated near the bus stop. what makes matters worse it that there is no police patrolling the area, putting the people in fear.

It is not healthy for the people who has to see all these things while waiting a bus. I believe better can be done to the kalinago people.

I get the vagrant issue… other than that there is no issue… people just find to walk a few extra steps and cross a bridge is a tie up… I actually did not even know they were relocated there as I still see buses there from time to time. I thought only Castle Bruce buses were relocated. Patience people…. patience.

Everywhere has vagrant issues. You are on point to state that people find the little extra exercise is a tie up. That is basically the issue and nothing else.

Why bring your complaint to the media? People need to have patience. Miriam Blanchard is very busy, u think your problem is the only problem need solving. People too ungrateful, after all the hard work skerrit doing people just complaining. :-?

Oh please, let the people voice their opinion. This place is unhealthy and this drugs business is no good. no one knows when bullets will be fired in this place and being there, lives are in danger. Portsmouth bus stop that is much closer to where they are working wasn’t moved and they want to move Kalinago. All buses should go back and let them come and give tickets every day. Nonesense.

    • My opinion not yours .

Its time something be done , I’m glad they brought it to the media , let your voices be heard , every Dominican knows Kalinago are very patient people . You have a voice use it .

The job of each successive regime is to build upon and improve and create systems that will enhance the lives of ordinary citizens. After 15 years in office and millions of dollars in revenue from the Passport Selling Scheme, we are still without a proper bus stop in Roseau. Organization and progress are the hallmarks of ongoing development. The PM and his cronies are too busy picking fights with Danny Lugay, spewing mapwis and globe trotting on one jolly after another, instead of focusing on the needs of our people.

This is a situation that was inherited…without many options. When the government starts asking people to relocate even (if they getting paid for their properties) because they want to put bus stops etc you will see how much uglier it will get. You remember how difficult it was to get people to move from the stadium area? There are other private sector cases I won’t go into detail here who had similar issues. So unless we all see the big picture together, some will always disagree on certain issues.

So I post my comment about the parl rep and DNO took it out and have people thinking my commment is about the bus drivers. anyways DNO just take out my first comment completely because it makes no sense you removing words and putting what you wish

    • fed up
      October 20, 2016

DNO you post half of the comment and removed the part of the parl rep. The “saving face” comment was about the parl rep not the bus drivers. You too like controversy.
