Dominica’s Kalinago community says it is very upset over an email alleged to have been sent by a professor of a tertiary institution here that describes Kalinagos as ‘dumb’.
The “offending” email was sent to a member of the community who told Dominica News Online that she is baffled and disappointed about the anger expressed in that email.
“You Kalinago people are so dumb that despite being the first set of people here, you all allowed us blacks who were later brought in as slaves to claim majority of the land, forcing your tribe in a little section of the country,” the email, which was obtained by DNO, stated.
According to the receiver of the email, who prefers to remain anonymous, she began receiving those email messages some time ago but disregarded them as junk.
However, she says one email was sent as ‘urgent’ and she decided to read it.
It is reported to have been sent by a female professor at the Dominica State College – DNO hasn’t been able to verify the authenticity of the email and whether it was actually written by the professor to whom it is being attributed.
“To date, while we the blacks are holders of land titles you all are deprived of the privilege of owning a portion of land, from a land which was not only initially but rightfully yours. Is this not a good enough of an example to show you that you should never mess with the blacks. After all we are not the ones who are living in deplorable conditions in little shacks by the roadside but in concrete houses, luxurious apartments and even in mansions and villas,” the email said.
The controversial email has ignited heated discussion, especially among younger members of the Kalinago community, who have denounced the opinions expressed in the message as the kind of thinking they thought had been left in the past.
“How can the professor treat all students under her tutelage impartially? How can she motivate the same students whom she considers dumb? How can she as an educator, one who understands the intricacies of education psychology use a word as “dumb” so loosely and moreover convey such sentiments?” one Kalinago told DNO via email. “It is inconceivable for one who holds such strong prejudices against some of her own students, those of Kalinago descent, can provide a fair and equitable opportunity in the classroom.”
A Kalinago Facebook page has also been abuzz with discussion on the matter. “This is downright disrespectful,” a member of the page stated.
When contacted Kalinago Chief Garnette Joseph said he is aware of the email but hasn’t read it and could not comment.
Every professor has a cross road with foot in the mouth, but these are the things they must live with while they neel and pray on the weekends from full Nature Island view on total embaressment.
Peoples know all to well that Waitikubuli can keep you in mind as the ungreatful one spoken for with hatred in heart.
Clearly this could be some form of a mental health issue revealing it self, because healthy professors don’t commit to self labotomy, if regarded to be well respected in ones community or country and even maybe the world, because sad news travels real quik for the sick at mind.
I leave by saying I realy think people should have a heart for this professor and do all they can to have her evaluated real properly and even if Dominica Peoples group up as one to fly her to the United Kingdom to speak with the very best european well trained psychiatrists for diagnostic care, that money can buy.

Well, i am not very surprise by this article. My own experience has shown me that Dominica is not a good place for me as a Kalinago. I have been called names and going to Roseau has never been an easy task.Overall leaving in DA has not been easy.. I always found someone in the street to give me a negative comments, etc… Anyways, i am thanksful to God that have made me discover the world (Japan, Korea,Germany, Martinique, Guadeloupe, England and now the US where i reside) and where people have been treating me better than in my own country…. So as sad it can sound, no, i am not surprised by the comment of this professor..

While these alleged statements are foolish, we must not be hypocritical. The lecturer would have a right to his/her view, yet that does not give her the right to discriminate against the Kalinago. We must also state though that the statement made by the Chief some time about about him not wanted the blacks to have children with the Kalinago, this was also discriminatory, but that was his point of view.

Did you know that Columbus crossed the Atlantic to spread christianity to the new world and find new wealth. well he met the Native Indian people who made it there many many years before him, The Native indians seem kind, they greeted and welcome Columbus and his crew with food, gold etc. for a minute i was puzzled, I thought these people were actually expecting us europeans.

Native indian wives when missing, and their men were being recruited to work as farmers, and were being taught christianity, the Carib chief said Hell No – in there own language of course – come to find out columbus crew were all criminals, although he tried to control the crew they would not listen, so they kept killing the indian men since they refused to work and keep raping their women. Make things worst we kept stealing their land, poor indians went crazy.
so the caribs would not for nothing would allow themselves and their people to be enslaved by the Europeans. Matter of fact, the Caribs declare war on the Europeans, using their little bow-&-arrow, which were met with guns.
Well we had land that needed to be worked and we tried some white guys but those bastards died in the sun, we tried indians – no success, chinese – no success. all of those were not slaves!
So we went to africa, the picture is a little fuzzy since i wasn’t there that day but was told that the African leaders gave away free man and woman.
Those african could work, they work so hard so much money in our pockets that we forgot about those native indians, since we had almost kill them all.
We kept going back to africa, taking those strong men and women,

But whats so funny about this story Kids, is that they african nation is the only nation who knew of the brutality of slavery, but never said anything, any other country would declare war on the europeans. I mean we learnt few month ago that the Philippino govt refused to send any workers to certain con tries till they improved conditions.

If you must bring in those instances where the chieftains sold slaves, you must also mention that the tribes were taken as slaves because they would not accept a certain religion, so they were isolated as heretics and their villages eatmarked for raids. Without the guns of the “ghosts”, their capture was not possible.

Unless that Professor needs the attention of Dr. Benjamin, she just could not have thought, far less express those sentiments. And worse, put them in writing.
At any rate those sentiments are inaccurate. There are many negroes living in shacks or even by the roadsie, and many Kalinagoes living in wall houses; so the expressions in the email would not come from a mature, educated person.
What is more the Professor would know that the email could be traced to her, so she would not send anything like that out from her computers.
This sounds more to me like students at war. A Kalinago must have captured more marks in class or won over that immature person’s sweetheart and the “loser” is giving vent to ill-feelings in this manner.
Or worse yet, someone could be trying to start a civil war in Dominica, just to destabilize the country.
By the way, I have seen emails showing that they came from me that I never sent out, so this is happening here in Dominica. Dont be too quick to judge.

This e-mail was sent by one stupid individual,and I don’t think we should generalize on it to think that that is the sentiments shared by majority of people outside the Carib race. As a former teacher of Caribs and black students in the same classromm, I can assure my Kalinago brothers and sisters that they are just as brilliant. In fact some of my best students academically and otherwise were from the Carib Territory. So don’t let what some foolish people say get under you skin. We can discuss it, but you know you are just as good as anyone else. You should remain a proud people who defended your land in the face of grave adversity from the Europeans.

Whoever wrote that letter is a hateful person who doesn’t know Dominican History. The Kalinago in Dominica are the only survivors from a time when all original Caribbean races were made extinct through war, murder and diseases. The tribes in Dominica fought for almost 2oo years after discovery until the late 1700’s. They survived despite atrocities such as those in Massacre where the river ran red for days with their blood from mass murders committed by Europeans. Blacks inherited the land but the Kalinago fought for it to the Death… they retained a portion land in Dominica by appealing to the Queen in a letter. Blacks had nothing to do with the destruction or ascension of Kalinago people. Fortunately being a Dominican in his 30’s I was not raised with racism but with West Indian pride which encompasses all people born in the Caribbean regardless of race.
Sir Henry Hesketh Bell was the Administrat appointed by the throne who saw it fitting that the Kalingo tribe be honored for their bravery and alloted a portion of the island to honor and preserve the tribe. Upone his arrival to Dominica he note that: “No definite allocation of this land had ever been arranged, and it seemed to me highly desirable that the small remnant of the people, who once owned the whole island, should be permanently guaranteed the possession of their last homes. I decided therefore that their Reserve should be properly delineated and officially recognised. It was with the object of informing the Caribs of my decision that I was making my journey to their district.” Administration Henry Hesketh Bell.

Kalinagoes know that they can buy land anywhere in Dominica like anyone else. The only difference is that they have the added advantage of holding land in the Territory for life without having to fork out the atrocious sums of money that some blacks have to spend their whole lives paying for.

it is not surprising that such a philosophy exists within the so called elite educated bracket of our society. For a very long time now we have seem to brush aside the trapping of racism that still exists and likely to persist. Such a statement by any member of a post slavery society attests to the thoughts expressed by paulo Freire in his classic text: The pedagogy of the oppressed. I urge every Dominica to be familarized with such insights.

While I am against such statements one has to be certain of the source of the email. In this day and age the IP address needs to be traced back to the source, before we begin to make comments directed at the alleged sender!
Identification or not this sentiment exist now and has been in existance for ages .I is about time for it to be burried.
Get LIME or the service provider to trace the email. It must have come from a compouter. The governmnet should condemn such hutful statements about the Kamlinago people and should deal with the matter seriously. Personal matters between that tutor and the person who received the email should not be mixed. All kalinagos should not suffer as aresult. This paints bad image for the college expecially in the eyes of the region as people come from other parts of the region to stuidy at the college. Is that what they are coming to Dominica for. It needs to dealt with. I image the person who kept receiving those emails could not take anymore. The Kalinagos barely respond to peoples comments about them but it has realyy gone too far this time. There are many Dominicans like the sender of this email evn at the highest level in the privae and public sector. They mix personal matters/beef with people and go public with them. Personal matters shoul remain personal and not Peter paying for Paul as it were.
The person making the statement has not committed a crime so what you are asking is not legal. We should simply stand in objection to such views and let our voices be heard, but you can’t do anything legally to the lecturer for what she has said.

There is that great suspicious that whenever there is a plot afoot to create unrest among normally peaceful people, rumours of that nature start somewhere to incite anger and contention.
