‘La Caribbean Connection’ donates US$4000 to Red Cross

The Dominica Red Cross on Monday received US$4,000 courtesy of ‘La Caribbean Connection’ to assist in the rehabilitation phase of Post Tropical Storm Erika relief operation.

The La Connection Caribbean, a group of Dominicans based in the New Jersey, was formed to assist Dominica following the passage of the storm.

“We are here to present a cheque of US$4,000 to the Red Cross,” Group leader of La Connection Caribbean, Hilroy Garraway, said during a brief ceremony held at the Red Cross Headquarters in Goodwill. “The reason why we chose the Red Cross is because we know that the Red Cross is an International organization and we heard that they are doing good for the people of Dominica in terms of assisting them.”

According to Garraway the organization hopes the cheque will go a long way to assist persons affected by the storm on the island.

Meantime; President of the Dominica Red Cross, Phillip White said the donation in no doubt will assist the Red Cross in its various programs.

“We have gotten assistance from overseas in terms of food items that have been distributed,” he stated. “We have also assisted with mattresses and stoves.”

He stated further that the Red Cross will embark on a refurbishing program, “so this cheque will assist persons, most probably persons in your community also who have been affected and also in the wider community of Dominica.”

White said following the passage of the storm, Dominicans in the Diaspora have come forward to assist their fellow brothers and sisters who are affected.

“Since the passage of Tropical Storm Erika on August 27, a number of Dominicans; both local and overseas have come together and have marshaled their forces to raise funds to assist needy persons in Dominica. It is heartening to know that you have recognized the significant role that the Dominica Red Cross Society can play in times of disaster,” White said.
