“Lions” on new bridge cleaned

One of the cleaned "lions"

The recently defaced and vandalized Foo dogs “Lions” on the new Dominica/China Friendship Bridge are for the most part, clean again.

The “good Samaritans” who undertook the task, are a group of young people from the Cottage and Portsmouth constituencies .

One of the cleaners told Dominica News Online that they felt compelled to do something about the vandalized statues, to underscore Dominica’s appreciation to the Chinese government for funding the bridge project.

Patricia Mills said she saw the story about the defacing of the statues on Dominica News Online, and spoke to her neighbor about heading to Roseau to clean the “Lions”.

Mills said she lived for several years in China, and is aware that the foo dogs Lions are usually given as a friendship gift.

She called the vandalizing of the statues “total disrespect to the Dominican public”, to the government and to the Chinese who funded the building of the bridge.

According to Mills many tourists use the new bridge, and she couldn’t allow the “lions” to remain in a vandalized condition.

DNO reported on February 14 that smeared with some kind of oil, three of the four “lions” gracing the entrance to the new Dominica/China Bridge show signs of having been clearly vandalized.

The statues have been the subject of controversy, with many comments made in response to a Dominica News Online story showing  that some people are not happy with what they see as Chinese symbols being placed on a Dominican bridge.

The bridge, opened on February 1, is a 70-metre structure constructed over a 17-month period to the tune of EC$8-million provided by mainland China.

Please, We need to install and monitor Cameras in Public places to help Catch and hopefully Reduce the vandalism and other criminals.
Cameras are very affordable these days (Big Up the Chinese for that!)
After the London Riots last year, the British police were not at all worried. They simply took their time, reviewed pictures from the CAMERAS located all over London, etc and quietly picked up the CRIMINALS . . at their convenience.

I have an idea. Maybe the Chinese government could assist in eradicating crimes in DA? I am certain that they could do an excellent and successful job of it. This would be a great help to DA and law-abiding nationals.

Really! Look at those pictures of the lions/foo dogs. They look so ugly. It is not something that Dominicans had ever envisoned and expected.

  4. Concern
    February 20, 2012

Great job to the folks of Portsmouth. I understand the concerns of the people, but sometimes we are too quick to judge. I applaud the people of Dominica for paying attention to what is going on in the county, but still they must be careful before taking actions. I would say continue to be watchful and voice your opinions, but please gain knowledge so you can stand up firmly when you fight for your rights. Although, Foo Dogs are associated with Buddhism as protector of sacred buildings, they are also given as gifts. The dogs were commonly placed at business institutions, temple gates, home entrances, and estates to guard against evil, so just maybe it was given as a gift and not with the motive to take over the country. Proud that you are mindful of your surroundings – good looking out for your country. Keep it up!

Dominicas don’t we all love our country? Then stop and notice whats happening around the world. As much as we all love to see new developtment like new bridges, roads etc, we cannot give a blind eye to the real intent of the Chinese. Do you all think that the bridge is free? Well think again. China is planting their mark all over the world in the name of gifts. All they are doing is securing themself to take over our natural resources in the future. What do we have that they want? you may ask. Well what do we have most of? OUR water . One of these days we are going to wake up and see that all that we are taking for granted will be taken over by china. Dominicans its time to wake up and stand up if you love your country as you say. When you are gone your children and grand will be left holding the empty sack and they will not have a Dominica to be proud of like we did. China is not a country to play with. America the greatest country is now realizing that but its too late because they have already gotten too far. If the United states is feeling the punch Dominica sure will be feeling the pinch in due time. Remember Dominicans there is no free lunch we have to pay for it some how.
The govt need to be more transparent in what they are doing. The people we put in charge need to be more concern about the welfare of the country. They need to wake up and study whats going on around them globally to see how fast every thing is changing and adjust to the changes.
Wake up dominicans and stand up for your country.

Vali is true, no one have given Dominica anything free, not England, not America, not Canada, so why are you people happy to have white people exploit, all you but when a minority group just like all you self, come to help all you turning racist, see the slave mind still remains. Well China could never do to Dominica what the whites did to her, enslave her people, kill the men ,then rape the women and children, no education work hard in sun for no pay and beatings and hangings, so if all china want is to make better use of the water than any one have done to date, well they are making it accessible , so all the talkers, just come back and live in Dominica and bring jobs when all you come, and make more children, then we will never run out of black people in Dominica.

why you could not do it for yourself?
you do not have anything going on in Dominica
there are few Dominicans working in agriculture
your only income comes from Tourism & Vat.
Be smart people of Dominica like the saying goes
“do not look a gift horse in the mouth”
As a Dominican living overseas I know very well that Dominicans best attribute is “QUAZE” or criticism, and that is why we have not developed.
The people with the most successful businesses came from other countries. Why Dominicans can’t get together to build great businesses? instead
of sitting by the road playing domino? why don’t you learn something from these people?

Malaway child you know who started the war on drugs, nd send our police boots to go in de bush to burn dowm the marijauna, they did not build us a school or a hospital or improve our roads, they put Ross University you know why, it gives them the excuse to invade Dominica anytime they want in case they want under the pretext of protecting their citizens, but you all are so busy buying propaganda you cannot understand anything. So we have nothing to fear from the Chinese, America have already invaded Dominica, and if America was not happy for the chinese to be in Dominica, islong time they would invade. So just stop being so crass, and enjoy all you foo dog, by the way, remember who made slaves of all you and call all you 3/5 human it was not the chinese. The chinese suffered the same humiliation, the difference is they ot up shook up and now they are a force to be reckoned with. America respecting them and everybody respecting them, who respecting black people for their stupidness all Dominicans can do is parlay sort.

You will have to address this to Dominica’s Prime Minister and his Deputy. Up to now they are “Mum” on this. I guess they are taking a back step since China has helped DA and they do not want to offend the government of China lest their help be withdrawn. I am certain that the Chinese government is fully aware of the sentiments of Dominicans, pro and con.

These people should start cleaning their front and back yard before coming to pretend to be so good when in fact they are brain washed with a visit to China as much as the capitalist and colonial powers brainwashed many black people.Portsmouth is so dirty and needs cleaning up,i went to the Turtle Purple Beach and the amount of plastic, styrofoam and human debris that’s in the water,it would be good if these people could put a clean up campaign once a week. When the first colonisers came here, the first thing they did was installed a cross to initiate their dominance of religion, the Kalinago people resisted and broke these crosses, today it’s another set of colonisers the Chinese coming in the name of help, aid and friendship installing their religious statues and idols which is an abomination in the eyes of the most high GOD.It seems to me black people and those in this island are very easily bought and sold, they accept everything that’s imposed on them be it religion, music or culture that does not belong to them. Can we imagine the dominant religion in this island belongs to the Roman Empire? How could black and Kalinago people religion come from Rome?Answer that yourselves!

It is beyond my comprehension why any country will assist other countries when their people are residing in sheer poverty and domination. There must be something behind that; that they have an ulterior motive for assisting the West Indian countries. I heard they are also assisting Guyana and Latin American countries. Do they want to conquer those countries and later be the world-domineering government and nation? Time will tell.

    .

Significance of Lions and international gift .
New animal specie was introduced in Dominica, and yet some people ask if they have veterinary certificate!
    What are theses animals ?
Guardian Lions are a common representation of the Asiatic lion in pre-modern China. They have traditionally stood in front of Imperial palaces, tombs, government offices, temples, and the homes of government officials and the wealthy, from the “Han Dynasty”, and were believed to have powerful protective benefits. Pairs of guardian lions are still common decorative and symbolic elements at the entrances to restaurants, hotels, supermarkets and other structures, with one sitting on each side of the entrance
There are various styles of guardian lions reflecting influences from different time periods, imperial dynasties, and regions of China. These styles vary in their artistic detail and adornment as well as in the depiction of the lions from fierce to serene.
The lions are always created in pairs, some times with the male resting his paw upon the world and the female restraining a playful cub that is on its back. Other styles have both lions with a single large pearl in each of their partially opened mouths. The pearl is carved so that it can roll about in the lion’s mouth but sized just large enough so that it can never be removed., as those standing in the two entrance of the Roseau bridge
The lions are traditionally carved from decorative stone, such as marble and granite or cast in bronze or iron
Lions in the China/Dominica Bridge are made of black marble. But the stone was not polished as it aught to be to keep the attractive shining of the material. From that, the statues remain grey, and becomes more black when rain falls. When drying , grey color comes back except in the parts where humidity remains and leave some spots more dark, specially under the mouth where the sun don’t warms the stone. There the shadow leave marks darker as if the lions get rage …
Even if it happen that “Vandalism” could occur making stronger that effect ( the oil reportedly put on them don’t dry as quickly as water), it will come back after each rain and disappear when sun coming back ….To avoid that, complete the “Art work” by polishing or apply several coats of strong external varnish .
Some Dominicans are not grateful about that gift from bridge builders arguing about “neo colonialism” and ignorance of traditional Dominican Culture.
It is to ignore that in all historic times and every were in the world it was and it is by the way of monuments and sculpture that Governments and people show their friendship one together. Those Lions have no more, no less significance than the Valentine gifts in between lovers. Are you sure that your girl friend likes those ear rings she received (easier for you to buy) , when she expected the new shoes she told you about last week ?
Generally such gift ware the mark of culture of this one that offer it. How could it be in other way ? This is a good circumstance to learn a little bit more about this friend.
Dominicans could they be more happy to receive the Liberty Statue that France did gave to the US without any project to invade later North America ?
Maybe the Louxor Obelisk given to France by Vice-King of Egypt, even if it was not in French traditions to use that kind of solar watch ?
There was no comment when the US did officially accept from Moscow a Statue created by the modern Sculptor Artist Tsereteli presenting a tear pending in the middle of a destroyed tower as symbol of terrorist acts in 11th of September 2011… And nobody did suspect it to be a Trojan Horse containing electronics able to destroy all internet communications inside the US !

And what about this coffee pot offered to the town of Mombassa, in Kenya ? Could it be let in his package without vex the government that did offer it ?
Dominicans are well known to have good manners. So I suggest that after having give thanks to China for this gesture, the Dominican Government ask for Dominican or resident Artists to make individually or in joint venture the project of a Monument to give in counterpart to China.
That could help Sculptors to receive some money and promote a part of main art domain – the one by with civilizations remain known for Eternity- that was forgotten for years in Dominica .: How many order for Monument or Statues where given to Artists since was build the (late) Fountain in the bay front Boulevard…?

In my opinion i think everyone is over reacting about these dogs. Just because the dogs have special purpose in china doesn’t mean that they serve the same purpose here. I have not heard the prime minister tell us to worship the statues (IN CHINA THEY ARE SACRED IN DOMINICA THEY ARE JUST STATUES). Cows are sacred in certain places we eat them in Dominica. PLEASE DOMINICANS KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE REAL ISSUES. THE DOGS ARE JUST STATUES ON THE BRIDGE.

Weh!Weh! Di yo hele pou nou…di yo pleurer pou nou…

Many years ago, I always believed that we were a people who lived by the mantra, di yo pas hele pou nou…now, I see that we have become a people of, “di yo hele pou nou”

This is the exact reason why the house slaves would betray the field slaves when they wanted to run for freedom. This is the same reason why the Bola Bola Tribe would sell their fellow country man to the Portuguese for a mirror and a frying pan. Why are all Dominicans crying that this is vandalism? This is an act of protest. As a black person, without protest, you would not be where you are, today. Remember Jacco? Perhaps if the five leaders within his camp had not surrendered, things would have been different.

If something burns your conviction, and troubles your soul, and you take a stand; how can that be vandalism?

Ohhh Lord, looka here…di massa gon git mi…oh lord, looka here, I don distorb di massa…the field slave don durty da massa’s bridge.Boo!hoo!hoo, I gwan tell my massa dat di field slave dem runnin way so dat he keep ma belly full…

You are correct. Those things on the bridge are so ugly. They do not enhance Dominica nor the bridge whatsoever.

I do not know why those people would give you thumbs down. Are they godless people? God sees and has taken note.

It is Our Lord Jesus Christ, our King and Saviour whom we worship; not animals.
It is Our Lord Jesus Christ whom we look to for protection; not animals.
It is Our Lord Jesus Christ who is our Healer and strength; not animals.
At the end of our lives it is Our Lord Jesus Christ, our impartial God, who will judge us for all what we have said and done, failed to do and will give us our fair and just recompense as each one deserves. No one will escape; not the godless, the heretic, agnostic, atheist and those who worship animals and whatever other godless things they believe in and worship.

Our Lord Jesus Christ said to a visionary: “When He returns ensure that we are on his right hand side.” His eyes are on us.

Therefore, the folks who gave you thumbs down, they better take good note. It is Our Lord Jesus Christ they will turn to and run to assist them and heal them when all hell breaks lose in their lives and they have no one and nowhere to turn to. At this moment, they better be on his side and stand up for him.

I see good reasons for people to make a fuss about the Foo Dogs being placed on the Bridge. Isn’t that bridge officially called Dominica-China Friendship Bridge? And isn’t friendship something that exists between two entities? So how comes they did not put two Sisserou and two Foo Dogs to show symbols of identity of the two friends? Rather they have symbols of China only.
This is what we need to piece together: When a conquering power makes a conquest, what do they do?. They erect a symbol of their power or identity such as their flag or their national emblem. The Chinese are slowly becoming our next Imperial power whom we will have to bow to because they are unwittingly doing things which we are blinded by but which will eventually have us indebted to them.Just wait and see. Every project they undertake will be crowned by a Chinese symbol and no sooner we will become like Tibbet.

      @ Voice from The North

This is what makes patriotic Dominicans angry. Those who gave you thumbs down need to have their heads examined and to pray to God for His blessing and graces. They have a major problem. I do not think that they care, if in a few years from now, Dominica becomes the Republic of China, a non-democratic country. Selling their country in such a manner and standing up for those things.
Even though China helped DA and built the bridge, did they have to place those four animal replicas on the bridge?
Was the Prime Minister of Dominica or his deputy consulted about it prior to placing them there or did they take it upon their own to place them there? They did not care if DA nationals would be displeased about it. Do they, in general, care about DA nationals and what they think?
I do think that China is too presumptuous and inconsiderate. China is not assist DA and other West Indian countries for nothing. Wait and see.
So just because it helped Dominica did it have to place those ugly things on the bridge? Dominica is no more elevated and enhanced for it.
Let us ask God to always keep His eyes on DA and to protect it as He always did in the past, is doing so in the present and will continue to do so in the future. God wants our prayers. God help Dominica.

He who controls your mind, controls every other part of your body. For hundreds of years, such strategies have been used. Missionaries, Slave Masters/Plantation owners et al were very good in those practices of mind/body control.

Black history month it is this February. Have we forgotten already? For a few trinkets, for a few dollars more, some people would sell their mothers, brothers, sisters, other family members to the colonial masters. History is replete with those accounts.

Those practices continue today, but in different forms. Many times, it is difficult for the simple minds to detect or understand. Such practices are still visible in Africa, Asia, Latin America, USA, Europe, Middle East and the Caribbean. Peoples all over the world have been resisting that continued onslaught of enslavement of the mind. Many have been turned into Zombies.

    • February 18, 2012

Though the world has advanced in so many ways here in Dominica it seems that we are paralized
by the dark fears we transported with us from the African continent,it’s a fear of other tribes that so manifested itself even today where people would throw certain liquids infront of their doors
to protect them from another black person. This Island has been paralized for too long by this dark outlook on life it is no wonder that Islands
like Dominica, and Haiti are the poorest in the Caribbean. This has nothing to do with the Chinese, It has everything to do with us.
Be smart people! do like the great nations do
embrace the Asians, because they are producing the brightest people in engineering,HiTech, and Agriculture etc.
we are not producing nothing, we are only consuming, because our schools only produce Lawers
Doctors, and civil servants, how do you build a country with that. That is why many in the Diaspora are dissilusioned by this type of mentality; because in Dominica they think of us the same way they think of the Chinese. It would be easy to say let them stew in their pot of confusion while they blame Govt for all their ills;but as a Dominican I feel there is still some hope if we embrace change in a more enlightened way.

Mouth of the south such suggestive opinions are not helpin the ignorance demonstrated by the vandalising.
Here is the truth, Dominica have some ole blood people in it, people who cannot understand, we need to hold together as one people.
The Chinese or no other can destroy us or take our island from us if we are loyal to one another.
But unfortunately people can always be turned aainst one another based on greed and Jealousy. Leblance had a dream for Dominica, and they nearly kill him for the dream, Patrick had a dream for Dominica, they put him in Jail for the dream,
Rossie and Charlo had the dream and they killed them for the dream, the only person that survived was Mamo and she got a title, by those she worked for keeping the imperialist dream alive.
The workers party had a dream, but they got destroyed agains guess who was used.
Today we have a young PM who need all our prayer and support while he try to make the dream materialise, but guess what, we dont understand that those who want to see us fail as a nation while we support their dream for nationhood.

Foo Dogs are the ancient sacred dogs of Asia who guard Buddhist temples. The association between these dogs and Buddha is one of great significance. Foo Dogs have the appearance of a lion. The lion in Buddhist religion is seen as sacred, and has sometimes been offered to Buddha as a sacrifice. The name given to these guardians originates from China. The Chinese word for Buddha is Fo, which led to the original title– “Dog of Fo”.

Foo Dogs were popular because of their meaning. The Lion is a creature of the feline race that is known as the proud master of all cats. Its introduction into Chinese art coincided with Buddhism. The Foo Dog was the protector of sacred buildings and a defender of law. The dogs were commonly placed at business institutions, temple gates, home entrances, and estates. It was also not uncommon to see these sacred dogs guarding tombs or placed in front of government buildings to scare evil spirits. Through out the ages, Foo Dogs were frequently given as gifts to the Emperor. They would be presented in sculptures or in the form of artwork.

Foo Dog artwork varied. Buddha was sometimes depicted on the back of the great beast, but Foo Dogs are more often displayed in a powerful guarding position. The creature is usually presented holding a spear in its paw. This was the representation of the peace and serenity the animal would maintain for the sanctuary it was guarding; thus discouraging any wrong doers and demon spirits from entering the place of tranquility. The Foo Dog comes in many shapes, sizes, different materials, and colors. Their faces have a mischievous and almost devilish look about them; and their eyes are normally wide open with a tiny speck in the middle. This threatening appearance is what gives the idea that they guard against evil spirits. It is important to point out that the Foo Dog is also known as the Celestial Dog, and the Happiness Dog. The animal is a symbol of energy and value, and is often displayed in a male/female pair. The male plays with a ball that symbolizes the Earth, while the female holds a cub

We have freed ourselves mentally and physically that’s why we are not afraid of the Chinese statues or symbols. Business is business and we are treating it as such. To us the progressive minds these symbols are just a gesture of friendship.

      @ mouth of the south

You have surely made me laugh. A good one too. What sense of humour? God knows where they will end up and what will happen to them next time. :)
Do you think God is pleased about them, wanting the lions to take over His Holy and Majestic place and a country which He is quite capable of protecting, His Christian people of all who worship Him?
In Holy Scriptures: “…For our God is a jealous God and a consuming fire.”
Stay tuned for the hurricane season. Probably a bolt of lightning may do the trick. :) At the same time, I do not wish any nationals harm.
