Local appointment to strengthen relationship with Brazil

Emmanuel Nanthan is Dominica's non-resident ambassador to Libya

A non-permanent representative to Brazil is one of the top positions to be filled within the government, with more appointments to come, according to the Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.

The prime minister told a press conference at the Financial Center on Tuesday that the appointment is intended to strengthen the relationship between Brazil and Dominica and that more appointments are to be expected.

“We intend to do some more appointments …We intend to appoint a non permanent representative to Brazil that will be done over the next couple weeks and once that person is engaged then we shall inform you. Because we are seeking to strengthen the relationship between Dominica and Brazil,” he explained.

Skerrit said that former Education Minister Sonia Williams has been appointed as the secretary-general of UNESCO, while former Minister of Culture, Community Development and Gender Affairs Loreen Bannis-Roberts, who recently stepped out of the political arena is possibly being looked at to fill a position in government.

“There are options available to the government to engage the services of Mrs Roberts. I believe that Mrs Roberts is a tremendous asset to the country. When it comes to negotiations and being able to speak for and on behalf of Dominica you cannot take that ability and characteristic from Mrs. Roberts and I would be very pleased if she is willing to continue to work with me and work with the government,” PM Skerrit stated.

He said Emmanuel Nanton, who has been Dominica’s Ambassador to Lybia, is now functioning in the Office of the Prime Minister, and will assist him with his functions and specific assignments.

Although I think this move to develop ties with Brazil is a good one my concerns are about the calibre of people we are appointing to represent this country. I am wondering about the qualifications of some of these appointees. There are certain levels of academic skill not only political experience needed for some of these jobs.

The ability to analyse various policies on differing issues , to identify and use social indicators and knowledge in various planning techniques are necessary when dealing with international organisations such as UNESCO. Do some of these people possess such skills which are necessary to do a professional job ? I wonder because it makes no sense to appoint someone to the job just because they support you politically. It’s like sending a plumber to do a root canal. At the end of the day we will be ones who end up looking unprofessional.

But thats just me thinking out loud.

Its about time names like Mrs. Roberts call for a job too. This woman did not betray the party like most of the others. Look Baron went rouge, Capetolen went rouge, Rosanna went rouge, erickson went rouge, lol lol.

Man like Nathan dem doesnt take no mapew on the ground during electiion time and their names are first to be called for the good time. They doesnt do not one day of house to house and face the electorates, they doesnt never find themselves on a politcal platform but they always NEEDY NEEDY NEEDY and always getting the best piece of the pie. PM its time to GIVE SUPPORT TO THOSE WHO SUPPORT YOU OPENLY.

Tell Emmanuel Nanthan to get rid of that two-day a match winward island cricket tournament. It is all nonsense and get back to the four-day a match winward island crciket tournament as we have always known it to be. What can our batsmen and bowlers extract and display out of a two-day match? That’s why we cannot compete at the regional level.

The Executive of the Portsmouth LYO fully endore thesew new appointments. We believe that this new relationship with Brazil(pop. 192 million,GDP $1.98 trillion dollars,’08 estimate) speaks volumes of the Prime Minister’s visionary foreign policy. The BRIC nations(Brazil,Russia,India and China) have emergered from the economic downturn and are quickly becoming superpowers in their own right. We hope that the vetting process is transparent and that capable, competent Domicians will be selected to represent the State at the highest level. Kudos once again mr.PM

I believe that the PM should consider making Mrs Roberts the New High Commissioner to London…because God knows we do need someone of high calibre and good repute to run that office and represent Dominica at an international level.

A representative to Brazil is a brilliant and timely strategic move – with Brazil’s emerging status as a global power; the only BRIC country in the region, seat at the UN Security Council, member of the G20 – this is the real natural leader in Latin America and the Caribbean – it is about time – I have been calling/looking forward to such an appointment and I must commend the foresight to finally execute on this one – well done!

I am so please and very happy to hear that the government is seeking to find a high level job for Mrs Loreen Bannis-Roberts. Her actions have been selfless and she has represented the people of Castle Bruce astutely, their loss is the countries gain. In the last Parliament no Parliamentary representative represented their constituency better than Mrs Loreen Bannis-Roberts and I mean no one.
