Local radio station assists Shernel Prince

Prince

A local radio station here has attracted EC$32,000 in pledges for a Dominican woman awaiting urgent surgery in Trinidad and Tobago.

Q95’s Matt Peltier’s initiative is expected to boost a family’s chances of ensuring that their daughter Shernel Prince of Wesley does undergo the surgery required.

Her dad, Matthew Prince, who has been trying desperately to raise the funds required, said he was willing to “mortgage” his house to assist in his daughter’s medical bills.

Last week he was granted a loan of EC$50,000.00 by a corporate citizen.

This coupled with the results of the Q95 fundraiser is expected to help pay the bill of EC$80,000 for the operation.

Radio talk show host Matt Peltier opened the lines on Monday, facilitating people wishing to help.

According to Peltier the funds have already been wired to the family in Port of Spain following Monday’s radiothon.

Prince is currently a patient at a Port of Spain hospital.

In Dominica she was diagnosed with cancer and was told that she needed urgent surgery in order to remove some “cancerous tissues” in her body.

Speaking on the programme from Trinidad her dad explained that his daughter was given a “clean bill of health from cancer”.

He said however that because of the chemotherapy sessions she had to undergo she has suffered from licked valves in her heart which prevent the heart from pumping the blood required in order for the body to properly function.

Prince expressed disappointment that the Dominica Government  had failed to provide at least some of the financial assistance required.

“I am very disappointed that after speaking to the authorities in Dominica they have abandoned me, refused to take my call and left me and my daughter stranded” the Wesley man said.

He has thanked the Dominican public for their help, support and prayers.

During the last Supplementary Appropriation (July-December 2011), six Government Parliamentarians received a total of EC$315,676.59 for medical expenses abroad.

how can one get the address for the family of the young lady. I think we should still help the family because that’s the honorable thing to do. Dad took out a loan.he needs help paying that back. I Think he would feel real bless after what he experienced.

Good Gesture Matt. You have a big heart. You always think of your fellow Dominicans, whether is to help them win a song contest or to raise funds for the sick and needy, you do it warmly. God bless. I wish you continued success on your show.

I am very disappointed in DNO for not researching the story before. Please ask the family how much money they got from government to get them to Trinidad in the first place. I am very happy for Shernelle that she is getting the help she deserve. However we should not be ungrateful. She was sent for cardiological review and not for cancer cells which was taken care of many years ago thanks to the people who helped her at the time. Please research the material you print.im praying for Shernelle

So she was sent for cardiological review in Trinidad and the Cardiologists have determined that she needs surgery and the Government backs out?

And why does she need cardiological reveiew if she came in to you guys at the PMH with a good functioning heart?

Who is going to put up their hand and say I am sorry for messing up the child’s heart with the poor application of the chemotherapy at a Government run hospital in Dominica?

Sometimes, people need to think outside the box. The governemnt can’t be expected to assist everyone, pay every medical bill.

Someitmes, it’s we as a community that need to come together to assist – we are the government.

We can’t always expect that the”government” the party in power can foot a bill.

I’l sure if they had – some people would say is becuase they support the family supports the family thus, the reason for the assistance.

It’s has to be hard on the part of the govt to determine how and when money is given out for assistance.

Look at the story of the women who’s premature baby was given 15 minutes to live, and part of that story claimed that the PM – OUT OF HIS OWN POCKET, assisted her.

Sometimes, we need to realsie that althought the government is there for the people – they may not be able to help all the people.

we as the community can come together – every $1 helps

    March 20, 2012

Even in such times of grief, pain and suffering by the patient and her family, there are still those filled with stones in their hearts, trying to protect a heartless Govt. No way could it be fair for DLP politicians to have received hundreds of thousands of dollars for their medicals, while a young woman is denied the urgent assistance needed.

Wasn’t the Wesley Parl. Rep. a school teacher? Unbelievable a woman treats another woman like that in those circumstances. Heartless to the bone. Uncaring to the Max. And what are some talking about leave the politics? What is politics? We are seeing that because of the Parl. Rep’s and Govt. uncaring political decision, the Govt. has failed the young woman in her dire situation.

Work is being created for the Chinese construction workers to earn money from Dominica,$27,000,000.00 State Palace, but the Dominican is left alone, neglected until Q95 and Matt came to her rescue. Are you all surprised?

The National Health Scheme proposed by the opposition some years ago was ridiculed and rejected by those same people in power now. Such a scheme would certainly help to reduce the burden re. cost for medicals for our people. Q95, with Matt in the morning and other patriots, will continue to be disliked by the cabal for doing those Godly deeds. It maybe that same young woman who will, one day, hand those heartless Dominicans among us, a glass of water to quench their first.

    • pain
      March 20, 2012

Should be ‘National Health Insurance Scheme.’ Selfish, greedy people think only of themselves. No problem for money from tax payers for those DLP politicians to look after their health, but mucho problem for the young woman.

I don’t mean to sound harsh and no i do not support any party in Dominica as I think none is worthy of my vote. However speaking in a neutral sense, why does everybody feel that the family is entitled to help from the government? Let’s be frank about this. Go to any other country and find out a list of persons who go to their governments and get assistance regarding anything to do with their financing, especially medical expenses. Come on. While i am not giving them right or a thunbs up for not assisting, let’s just be honest to ourselves here. Dominica is not paradise like others like to think it is, the government is not the populations own personal bank or friend. What is happening right now is what should have been done from the very start. It takes a community to raise a child and it should take a community to save a child’s life. Don’t depend on the government. I do wish you Shernel a safe surgery and a speedy recovery.

You may be one of them that opposed the last government’s initiative to establish a NHIS. The govt should have assisted. Ministers get a 1000 dollar insurance allowance and further can go to Cuba for any treatment and that parliamentarian would be reimbursed.

1 Question: What makes Charles Savarin’s life more important to the tax payers of Dominica than this young woman just starting out in life???? is his wisdom move valuable than her youth? and the chance that her wisdom in time may even surpass that of Mr. Savarin? As a tax payer I am entitled to an opinion, and in my opinion, my contributions would have been well spent on the young lady as opposed to a man who should have his insurances and financial affairs in order at his age and length of involvement in public life. we may contend that we owe it to him for his service, but I can also contend that his life should be an example of accountability, good management and non reliance on the public purse… let us agree to disagree.

Perhaps this is the reason the young man refuses to leave office without having his personal affairs in order. so he does not have to return and burden the public purse, so that those truly in need can benefit from it.

      perhaps

I think we need a mandatory national insurance scheme to help with things like this: a 30 dollar reduction in all of our pay every month to go towards a national policy.(dear I say regional Insurance?) It will be hard for some but at least if some of our people fall sick they can get health care at no cost here and reduced cost abroad. the government should also have negotiations with other more advanced Caribbean countries to give Dominicans a special deal

    • Letmetellyou!
      March 20, 2012

So why cant they take that same money and have private insurance? People should take charge! There are many insurance companies. I feel sorry for the girl. I make it a point of duty to pay my insurance. I hope I never need it too. ALICO had a cancer plan. It is as little as 50-60XCD per month. Check them out. If you already have cancer you will not qualify. No I do not work there, I have the plan myself. Even if is a 800XCD you getting a month, stay without de Marpin and pay the insurance.

When EZiekel Bazil raised this concern about the childs health in parliament couple weeks ago, Gloria Shillingford hastily made fanfare and had her colleagues jeer at the man, claiming the girl is well and recieved governments assistance and he had no clue what he was talking about. Less than three weeks later the truth has been revealed. These people are so disrespectful and lie for politics that even health is taken for a ride. Gloria owes Dominica and the Prince family an apology. Somehow I knew that woman was lying!

I do not know Shanel personally, but she touched me. I just had to leave work and head out to moneygram to send off my pledge. I wish the surgery goes well, and that she comes back to Dominica with a whole new life.
After going through what she is going through and coming out victorious, she is even going to be more of an inspiration than she is right now. Matthew keep holding strong. I understand she is your only daughter and I cannot even imagine how hard that is on you.
Let’s continue to help people, because there is much more expense than the $80,000.00.
I cannot end without saying that our government seems to be run by a set of heartless people. What is $80,000 to save a fellow citizen life?!!
The thing is if it was election time, they would help. How shallow these politicians are! And how forgetful we are sometimes to be blinded my politicians meretricious ways.
But thank God for the many Dominicans who still have a good heart.

This gentleman is making serious allegations which must be answered by the necessary authority. Two paragraphs from the end of the article indicates a relationship between the gentleman and government, hence the word “abandoned” came in.

Could it be that the gentleman expected the government to pay the entire bill for him? Let’s asked the government for a comment on this issue to clear the air, less it becomes a political issue.

I remember when my son was born premature 8yrs ago and the doctor on call gave him 15mins to live and didnt try to do anything to save his live because he wasnt “viable” (born at 6mths) thank God that another doc who was a friend of the family came and helped. Then had to get him to Martinique. We tried to send a fax to the hospital in martinique through the hospital in da and they refused even though we offered to pay. PM gave us some money from his own pocket but the government itself never lent a hand. My sons bill came up to Euro 63, 000. The martinique people went all out to help us to foot that bill. But GOD is good. My son is healthy and strong and has lived many 15mins more than the doc here gave him.. Keep strong Prince family. GOD is good

Commmoonn!!Dominicans and political agendas killing the country.

Many others waiting for help and your case was so urgent, they had to be placed aside.

Soooooo the Government can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on Ministers who receive fat salaries with all sorts of allowances and they can’t at least donate $1000??? Naaaa man!
For the people who talk abt health insurance; can’t the ministers afford health insurance too?? Not all Dominicans are in the position to take up health insurance!

really and truly mister prince this sounds like you were looking for a political favor, does the government really have to assit everyone that need help financially, one would think that the government could assit by doing fund raising in collaboration with private sector and the general public as a whole,as a means of meeting you half way,i mean sympathize with you and your familly and also wish you much sucsess, but the whole idea of you wanting the government to grant you a financial favor does not sound right, because this is what people and the opposition is calling corrupton, this political favors, you see everbody thinks that the government can allocate monies for every single problem that life throws at them, and failing to see that this monies has to come from the tresury, and of coures has to be accounted for.

forreal, let’s hope you are never in the same predicament and have to pay to save your family members’ life. DO NOT be so quick to judge unless you are in this situation. Yes the government should of funded this surgery and you should be ashamed to think otherwise, as a UK born and raised resident I feel sick that this is even a debate. After all that the family has been through this is the least that government should have done. I can’t believe anyone is defending this mickey mouse government you are making Dominica a laughing stock over here!!!!

Be careful what you say the one with no name, it would appear to me that you are talking about what you do not know.

To you it is a joke, nonetheless I must remind you that you may find yourself in the same situation sooner or later, she will survive okay, God is the provider, and not politics, there are plenty of us who have made small donations, and God will do the rest, as of last night her sympathizers in Texas has sent her a donation, it will help.

Efforts are on the way to collect some more donations. Tomorrow I am sending my check to a relative of mine in Texas who is doing all in her power to collect some money for her cause, that relative has already sent her some money last night.

You should be happy to help, because sooner or later you will find yourself in the same situation, where you will cry out for help just as her parents has!

Why do you think her father, would be playing a game with her life?

Help if you wish, and can afford to spare a few dollars, however it would be better if you do not play politics with it, her life is at stake here!

Helper let me use your link to respond to Mr. Ras, I do not know if that’s his/her legal name, but anyway, I need to draw this to his attention.

Let us talk about Gloria Shillingford for a moment!

Before I continue let me assure you anything that I say about her is not intended to hurt her in anyway, nonetheless the truth must be told, and since I have no political motive I must make it clear to Mr. Ras, both Gloria and I could have been born to the same father, or mother.

In that Gloria’s father the late Jonathan Dods was my biological uncle, and my late mother Yvonne Dods was/is also Gloria’s biological aunt okay, to crown it all Gloria is married to another cousin of mine, who is not related to her!

My aunt Viola Joseph sister to my father is her husband mother. So I have no reason or intentions to hurt her.

However I believe if I remain silent on the matter, I would be condoning her actions, and incompetence!

Now I expect to be ostracized, and perhaps hated for my opinions, but that is the price I am prepared to pay for talking the truth.

The truth is if you go through the responses you will read where someone said when Basil brought up the problems of the girl in Parliament he was ridicule, by Gloria who stated he did not know what he was talking about, and assured the nation that she was been helped by the government, we all has now discovered that

        Gloria lied!

I am ashamed that she has sunk so low, I never expected that of her.

Plain and simple,if what she conveyed to the nation on the matter is not playing politics with someone life, Mr. Ras what is it called?

Let me tell you something, in Dominica some people gets help from the government, and that to me is based on the status they hold in the community, and their political affiliation.

In the days of the same Labor Party, and Patrick John, I have a nephew, cousin to Gloria also, he fell from a moving truck in 1962; owned and driven by another cousin of mine in the person of Emlord Timothy, in Wesley, they could not treat his broken body in Dominica.

Because we were very poor, his father went to the Patrick John administration for help, they did not give it to him.

As a result my nephew is in his late fifty’s still alive residing in Wesley with a withered, I believe left hand.

Should some loose their arm all due to damage rotator cuff, I think not.

That is not right, and it is not fair!

While Patrick John administration refused to help my nephew, they were sending people who could practically afford to pay for their medical expenses to Jamaica, Barbados, and even to Miami for medical treatment.

The very poor, and peasants of Dominica scarcely receive help from our governments, no matter who is in power.

That is how politics play in the life’s of our people, even when they are dangerously ill.

Politics, is involved, to much politics for that matter.

If someone want to know if my nephew suffered as I said, anytime you are traveling through Wesley, ask anybody if they know a man called Hanssey.

        His name is Alfred Destouche.

History has repeated itself, as I learned last night that this girl and I are closely related also.

God has spoken through this young lady by telling us don’t be discouraged and even when there seem to be every reason to despise and hate find within yourself to pray for those who hurt and try to destroy you.

I feel this girl and the family’s pain and fraustration at the lack of government assistance. This however points to a greater issue: what is the role of government in a society such as ours? Should government be expected (realistically) to foot the bill for all citizens undergoing major illness? Should personal responsibility be brought into play (a la medical insurance)? No maypuis … no name calling … just questions that should form part of a larger discussion.

How do you rationalize paying Government Parliamentarians $1000.00 (MN/ANually) for medicals and then meeting over $300000.00 for the same Government Parliamentarians in overseas medicals. This money comes from the taxes that the very poor people of Dominica have to pay. Why the discrimination???? Please tell me. A government who does not and cannot provide for the needs of its more vulnerable is as the bible puts it worse than an infidel. By the way, where is the minister for “Gender Affairs,Social Welfare and Parl Rep for Wesley” in all of this? DNO: “During the last Supplementary Appropriation (July-December 2011), six Government Parliamentarians received a total of EC$315,676.59 for medical expenses abroad.” This is a very appropriate final statement to the article, DNO.

Frankly, i am disgusted that even after the previous show where the father had appealed publicly to all concerned to help, he still did not receive the help, apparently.

There may be more to the story, but from all angles that i look at it, this story makes the government look miserable. I am nauseated!

BTW, it is said that the doctors in Dominica misdiagnosed the lady, Ms. Prince. If this is so, it is in itself a matter for investigation and possible litigation.

Yes the government of Dominica cannot even guarantee a $80,000 for it’s citizen or is it that one has to bow to the prince of prince and AM of PM to get financial aid. Is it that the so called well performing economy cannot afford to help a citizen in distress. Note though that the well to do government spent hundreds of thousands on cabals with the tax payer money. They spent the same on denominational churches, the same on a state funeral for someone who was undeserving of a state funeral.

The obvious question is “ where have we gone wrong?” – The answer is also obvious – A government and leadership caught in a system of ineptness, corruption and now totally confused. Actions and bad decisions have long caught up with this administration and the chickens are home to roost.

I wonder if CARICRIS need these kinds of data to perform a genuine analysis- no sugar coating or chocolate sprinkles on it.

I would like to ask Mr. Prince the following questions: Is it that Shernel never had cancer or she had the cancer and was miraculously healed. I know that that Shernel had a lot of faith. I was inspired by the amount of faith she exhibited so much so that i made a personal visit to her at the hospital. This young girl really taught me what it means to excercise faith even in the midst of despair. The word of God says if we have faith as little as a mustard seed we can command a mountain to move and it will. Shernel’s faith to me was much bigger than a mustard seed. Where your faith is Shernel God worked for you. I can still remember your smile and your kind faint voice when we visited you. We are hoping to reunite with you soon. Don’t let the situations diminish your faith. Faith got you through and it will continue to see you through my dear. God is in control. The timing of the money was not a delay, it was God’s way of increasing your faith. You are blessed.

But, that however does not dimminish the fact that our health system fails us misserably. I have had the unfortunate opportunity to see my child go through a simmilar situation where she was misdiagnosed. Thank God he quickened me to action and befor it was too late He provided the means for us to seek further attention overseas. Guess what? The local diagnosis was completely off… Thank God< He works in ways we cannot see and understand. Call that lack of faith but there is also somethinf called wisdom. By the way I really appreciate your posts….Keep em coming.
