The Coulibistrie / Morne Rachette Village Council has received a cash donation of $2,000 and 11 cartons of Loubiere Spring Water, courtesy of the Somerset Sports Club of St. Joseph, along with its sponsor Sagicor General Insurance Inc.

According to a release, the cash donation was made available to the Chairman of the Village Council at a short ceremony in St Joseph on Wednesday, in an attempt to accelerate cleanup of dirt and debris in the Coulibistrie area, and heighten the aspiration of the people in the area for an advanced restoration to a normal standard of living following Tropical Storm Erika.

“With the amount received the Council is expected to employ 10 young men in the area for five days a total of 300 man hours, on terms and conditions documented by the Club and to which the Council had consented to comply with,” the release said.

From the 11 cartons of water, 10 cartons were distributed exclusively among the elderly and shut-in and children in the community, while the remaining carton was donated to a member of Somerset, from Morne Rachette who is a student at the Dominica Grammar School.

Chairman of the Village Council, Ericson Robinson said during the ceremony that the cleanup is an activity which remains a priority and of which the community is in dire need of.

In accepting the donation, he expressed his gratitude to the Club and described Somerset as, “A Club with a difference”.

“It is unusual in Dominica for clubs to be engaged in such Community related activities,” he remarked.

Robinson also admitted that Somerset has been a pillar of support to the Coulibistrie Community following the passage of Tropical Storm Erika.

Meanwhile; President of Somerset Sports Club, Ambrose Sylvester, expressed profound appreciation to all contributors to the venture for the sacrifices made through the provision of these much needed resources, and very importantly to these patrons for the high level of confidence placed in the Executive and general membership of the club.

The Somerset sponsors Sagicor General Insurance Inc has a core group of existing members, augmented with that from Somerseters resident overseas and other benefactors, including, Mervin and Theresa Bruno, Archie and Sarah Romain, Stanley Paul and family, the St. Joseph Reunion Committee in Toronto Canada, and locally Mr. Camus Joseph and family along with a couple from St. Joseph who prefer to remain anonymous.

“These other contributors have not only expressed great satisfaction in the club’s participation in the relief effort to those adversely affected by Tropical Storm Ericka, but confidence in its leadership and general membership, citing their assurance that resources channeled through the club will be effectively utilized towards relief supplies and or reconstruction of adversely affected individuals and or communities, to the extent possible,” the release noted.
