Mayor applauds strides of Dominican women

Mayor Joseph.

Mayor of Roseau, His Worship Cecil Joseph has commended the efforts of women in Dominica, who he said has achieved tremendously over the years.

Joseph spoke to the media, following a panel discussion to observe International Women’s Day on Monday.

According to Joseph, the women in Dominica should be proud of themselves.

“When I listen to the struggles that women went through in the 18 and 19thcenturies I am happy to know that they can ride over the hurdles and get to where they are now,” he said

Joseph said Dominican women have done much better than several others in the Caribbean.

“We have seen that they have done better than many others of the world. We have had a woman as prime minister, we have women heading the police departments and playing leading roles in the parliament,” he said

He recognised that women in Dominica have also contributed to the cultural development of the country.

“They have taught the nation and their children to cook and appreciate culture. I have seen women entertained their husbands and his friends by preparing traditional meals. Women are really playing a leading role in society and they should be proud of themselves,” he added.

IS THIS A MAYORS SPEECH OR A BOY SCOUT? WHAT ARE THE STRUGGLES OF WOMEN IN THE 18TH AND 19TH CENTURY. ALL THEY DID WAS TEND THE HOME. IF WE LEAN ON TO THE BLACK MAN AND SLAVERY WOMEN WERE NOT TREATED AS MEN. IS THIS A STRUGGLE? WOMEN WAS KEPT IN THE SHADOWS OF MEN FOR CENTURIES BECAUSE MEN ARE THEIR PROTECTORS. WOMEN CAME OUT OF THE SHADOWS AND ARE PLAYING KEY ROLES IN SOCIETY.
