Met Office issues flash flood watch

Present conditions across the Winward Islands

The Dominica Meteorological Office has issued a flash flood watch for the next 24 hours.

A flash flood watch is issued when conditions are favorable for flash flood in flood-prone areas where grounds are already saturated from recent rains. A flash flood is a sudden, violent flood after a heavy rain.

According to the Met Office weather across Dominica is being affected by a trough system which will continue to maintain unstable conditions across the island during the next 24 hours. “Southwesterly winds in the upper levels will continue to transport a significant amount of moisture across the area resulting in an abundance of mid to high level clouds. Cloudy periods with scattered showers and possible isolated thunderstorms can be expected across the island during the next 12 to 24 hours,” the office said on its website.

The Met Office said, “The general public should continue to be vigilant and exercise caution since soils are already saturated and any additional showers increases the risk of flash flooding and landslides. Hikers should be vigilant and exercise caution.”

Last week heavy rainfall lashed Dominica causing widespread flooding and landslides across the island. Public Works Minister Rayburn Blackmoore described the damage as ‘severe’ and said clean up could cost up to $1.3-million.

So much so for rain and comments. I wish to say that the authorities need to continue to clean up the rest of the slides they left on the sides of the road from above the dam at Bagatelle to the village of Petite Savanne, it is still raining and the drains need to be cleaned to avoid further damages to our fragile roads. Thank you.

All I can is May God help Dominica.
The saying, water, water everywhere. We in Toronto are experiencing a lot of rain. Last Sunday it rained all day. We had a lot of rain during the week. It rained a bit yesterday in the early morning. Then the rain subsided. Today, it has been raining all day to tonight. What is comforting is that the temperature is mild; don’t know how long this will last. For myself, I wished that the temperature would remain as is throughout the winter but then again, as I always state, it is wishful thinking. :)

I am glad for this info by the Met Office. I wish that the Ministry of Education would issue a statement should there be a repeat of last week Monday and Sept 28, it is foolish to expose the children to the danger of this weather.
