Miss Caribbean-US pageant contestant cries foul

Nelisa Smith

Nelisa Smith, who represented Dominica in Philadelphia’s 2011 Miss Caribbean-US pageant, is complaining that she is yet to receive her prize almost a year after the event.

Smith finished second runner-up and she is still awaiting her prize money.

To make matters worse US media reports indicate that she and other contestants also sold ads for the show’s program book but many of the ads were left out and Smith got blamed for all the problems.

According to reports when Smith failed to get her money she sent “several obscenity-laced emails” to the organizers of the show and went to court in King’s County, New York where she got a $5,600 judgement against the pageant.

But according to the pageant’s CEO, Yolanda Wallace, Smith won’t be getting that money anytime soon.

Smith, who is from Salisbury/St. Joseph, attends college in New York and went to Philadelphia in 2011 to participate in the pageant.

“I am honored to represent my country and I’m elated  for having this opportunity,” she told Dominica News Online last year before participating in the event.

The show last year was her third pageant. In 2006, she won the crown in the Miss Dominica USA pageant and was a contestant in Madame Wob Dwiyet US 2009.

The 2012 Miss Caribbean-US pageant is scheduled for July 7.

This is not the whole story. This girl “Miss Dominica” had falling out with most of the other contestants before the pageant and the cursing started the day after the pageant. There are tons of emails, text messages, and voice mails to back this up. She was disqualified about a week after the pageant.

This is the type of dishonor and disgrace a woman must suffer when she displays herself like goods to be bought!

Our prophet peace be upon him said, “When a man works for you pay him before his sweat dries.”

So firstly, this girl was oppressed by these people who did not pay her and she has every right to be angry, however she went overboard by sending emails using obscenities.

Secondly, Allah says in the Noble Quran that one must be given time to pay. Was this girl notified for her inconvenience? Was she told when she would get paid or they left her hanging? If these were done then this is very unprofessional on their part; even if she is in America she has a right to demand her rights, she is a human being.

Thirdly, I urge the Dominican audience to be careful of US reports, they are compulsive liars, case in point, look at how the US media twisted the gay cruise incident.

Lastly, I believe this young lady is within her rights to feel angry especially if she was not informed about the delay. Also, women must learn to dignify themselves instead of exposing their bodies to resemble the behavior of prostitutes and harlots. Thirdly, even under anger one must try his or her best to behave in a dignified manner.

How degrading of you to be so disrespectful.
Instead of your obscene emails, you should send one apologising!
Everyone knows these thing have lots of red tapes etc, so just have patience. I doh know what money do people. I guess u were in it for the $$ instead of “representing your country” as you initially said!
    Shame!

    June 8, 2012

    Dear Ms. Smith,

You said that you were honored to represent your country. We shared your happiness for having the opportunity to fly the Dominican flag in the United States In fact, we are happy that you won. We are happy that you could have demonstrated the fighting spirit that Dominicans used to have tin defending their rights and to fight against injustice. However, unlike Dominicans today, you failed to demonstrate the level patience, tactfulness, class and diplomacy that necessary for resolving such delicate matters. The way you went about it was wrong. Didn’t you have a manager, publicist or advisor who could speak on your behalf? You could have called on ROSEAU VALLEY and I bet you –you would have gotten your prize money without any trouble or need for profanities

You see my dear young lady, many Dominicans did not have a clue of the existence of this beauty pageant when you participated. But we now know for the wrong reason that your beauty may well be only skin deep. If you claim to be representing Dominica –please we beg of you, to do so with a sense of pride in self and country, respect, and dignity that we expect of a Dominican young lady deserving of our support in the Diaspora. We do not condone such behaviour from those who wish to represent us at home our abroad. (Well ..we tolerate or PM cursing us and telling us it is not our damn business- sorry)
Nevertheless, ROSEAU VALLEY demands an apology from you on behalf of all Dominicans.

You read the emails, or you just going on with what you read? It’s ok to admonish her but some of you acting as if you are above board! Both parties are wrong. She should have displayed some restraint, but the organizers are at fault too. This happened to Daddy Chess with Discover Dominica, was he classless too when he blasted them on air? Young lady just learn never to incriminate yourself by putting things in writing that can taint your character

Now now NELS you know better. How can you send a profanity laced email even if you are upset? your soon to be uncle in law expect better from you in the future. By the way your cousin in the NEXT state I want to marry. I love that woman for years, even when she was a teacher. Boy I see my dream woman at the Groovers Jam what a BODY!What a Woman, but she still brushing me off, make a break for your uncle and behave yourself like a young lady.

DNO leave my message alone you know, I trying to win my dream bride. Nels I will call you so you can help me out.

if she has been brushing you off since she was a teacher and you need someone to “make a break for you” probably you trying to hard? she probably already have a bad impression of you I dont see her doing a 180 and start looking at you with passionate love. you’ve already mudded your water…Dont wast your time. Also if you consider leaving this message on a website as a way of “trying to win your bride” i dont think you’ll get to the “next level” (pun intended) . What happened to bringing her a flower, or going out with her for a drive, going to the beach and drawing her name in the sand or sit on a jetty with the water licking at your feet while you watch a sun set. I know what you thinking” mr gay eh” but no son…thats a few things you do when you trying to sweep a GOOD woman of her feet (not those girls that going around stealing gold i dont know how to get those ) believe women like being treated like the flowers that they are. Then again she seems to live far away from you. Thats all for now…anything else you’ll have to pay me

DNO leave my message alone you know, I trying to help the man win his dream bride.

Thank you Peeping Tom & Jamin.

Jamin is not today I’m in love with this woman and this may remain so till the day I die. Thanks for your encouraging words, I will take heed. I want to persue her on a very serious level, like I said she’s my dream woman.

Everything is joke for Dominicans at least I speak up. Jamin I haven’t muddy my water at all I just need to beef up my moves. I know for a fact she is VERY SINGLE, all weekend I gathering intel. Not little veyer I veyer that beauty back in Dominica. She would come to the bank where I worked with her late father and I would always stare at her. When I would see that woman in town is as if my day make. YES I!!! Beautiful brown skin, amazing eyes, brains, a great physique, let me whisper to you my dream love, give me a minute of your time. I saw the woman at the Groovers Jam and I almost feint! How I can’t tell her that all you?

DNO thank you for letting me at least speak to a woman I love.

@ Admirer Well well!!! if only DNO knew they’d be making a love connection! Follow your heart papa, this is touching almost reminiscent of a movie I saw on lifetime. Just find a way to let her know how you feel, don’t over, push go slow, if it was meant to be it will be, and even if it doesn’t go your way, at least you will be free in spirit knowing you told her.

I’m going through the emotions of a break up after 6 years and this just warmed my heart. Love is still alive and real.

Next time do not represent Dominica if you are going to display your bad attitude. Right now all Dominicans will be branded because of your thoughtless, carefree, and disrespectful behaviour. It never occurred to you that you were being an ambassador for your country? There arre diffrent ways of handling problems in a respectfu and lady-like manner. Eh! Eh!

That is something to be proud of? What does that have to do with Senjoe people and a negative stereotype? I know Kitty/Nelissa and I know other members of that family and some of them exude pure class so don’t condone her behaviour. She used poor judgement tell her so. Uncle still love you, because I want your cousin bad bad self. Mercy My Lord I can’t stop thinking of your cousin and she is one classly beautiful woman, so you have it in you to be otherwise.

when you representing a country you have to maintain your integrity. We understand that they did you wrong, but why send out such emails. After all, you were already dealing with the court to help you. Character counts.

“According to reports when Smith failed to get her money she sent “several obscenity-laced emails” to the organizers of the show and went to court in King’s County, New York where she got a $5,600 judgement against the pageant.”

that’s the worst thing she could have done, leaving a paper trail which included obscene language. People need to learn how to handle such situations without the use of profanity. Even though she won a judgement in court the pageant organizers have a right to appeal the ruling if they disagree with it (that might be the reason she has not received anything yet, these things take time).

You are a young lady representing your county, present yourself with grace. Word will spread and she will have a difficult time participating in future pageants if that is her way of handling the situation.

I wish her luck and hope she is awarded what was promised to her. Until then she needs to learn that patience is a virtue.
