Nadira Lando to receive official welcome

Nadira Lando

Reigning Miss Jaycees, Nadira Lando will receive an official welcome at the Melville Hall Airport when she returns to Dominica on Wednesday.

Lando captured the Miss Jaycees crown in Antigua on Friday 3rd August picking up the Best Modelling and Miss Photogenic awards in the process. She is the reigning Miss Dominica and Miss Caribbean World.

Lando will be met by Dominica Festivals Committee officials, LIME representatives, the press and members of a Kalinago Cultural group.

Following the reception at the airport, there will be a motorcade to the Carib Territory where she will be greeted by Kalinago Chief Garnette Joseph and councillors.

DFC Chairman Colin Piper said the whole island benefits from competitions like the one Lando participated in. “Whenever one of our young adults goes out to compete, the whole island benefits because in participating assertively and fairly, they bring attention to destination Dominica; and it is even more pronounced when they emerge victorious,” he said.

Natalie Clarke Meade, DFC Events Director, spoke highly of the beauty queen stating, “Miss Lando has made us proud from the very moment she became Miss Dominica 2012. She represents our Kalinago Heritage with a tenacity which speaks of a woman who remembers where she comes from and a vision for her future.”

A welcome ceremony is expected to take place at the Fort Young Hotel later in the evening.

Nadira take these negative remarks as compliments and just smile at them especially those of face up’s. And look at the positive. Keep on smiling

@ faceup if you have nothing positive to say then don’t say anything at all. We Dominicans get too jealous of others when they do good especially when we see we can’t or would not be able to do better. Tell me face up if you are male or female i don’t no but if you were miss Dominica how many of these titles would you have won? Answer that positively and honestly. No matter what she has on FB or not when she go out there she represent the Kalinago Territory and most of all DOMINICA. That’s how she is addressed as in the region MISS DOMINICA NADIRA LANDO.

even negative opinion is an opinion. DNO maybe I should call the radio to discuss the rights you are taking away from your readers to express themselves. As I said before this lady seems to be receving a lot of favouritism compared to past queens. What makes a good queen and good role model is not how many crowns you won (could just be a matter of luck, unfair judges or the contestants at the time being not up to standard). No fuss is made of past queens as much as this one..is because she is carib? and so what..no big deal. The carib people are no more important than any other citizen in Dominica. Why is she being referred to as kalinago queen. Is she not miss Dominica irrespective of what group she belongs to. Being carib is nothing special. Look at your past queens as fuss over the ones that have made something good of their lives..the ones that are successful today..that your young women can aspire to be like them. If us Dominicans want to see the positive side of being miss Dominica we will do that instead of making so much fuss over one person. When she get a big head allyou will complain

It’s her moment. Let her head swell. When she gives up the crown in 2013, the swelling will go down….LOL.

Not really true. I remember Last year much fuss was made about Marcia. We were just as proud of her . We are also proud of all our past
Queens who made Dominica proud. Its just that this year is Nadira’s time….Next year we will celebrate our new queen. You’ll see.

I don’t often comment however I must say I agree with this comment. A Dominican Queen is a Dominican Queen whether she is black or carib. We need to let young black women know that they are also beautiful. The most beautiful people in the world can be found in Africa. Too long have we let down black people. The one thing that I admire about Dominica is that she loves her people regardless of color. Caribs are beautiful but so are our young black queens. Keep the love for all flowing man. Again, this light-skin mentally must stop.

Congratulations Nadira. Job well done but I have to be honest and say that you are a real lucky young lady. if we are observant, the two shows which were held on more than one day with rounds being distributed over a two to three day period you won those but it is interesting to note that the show which had all rounds on the same night you did not do too well and I can understand that is why you opted not to take part in culturama in St Kitts this year. I observed the Jaycees pageant and know that if it was all in one night Ms Lando would not win, that St Lucian young lady was leading from the word go. From the preliminaries I put Nadira in the top five for evening wear and swimwear however she was in the bottom almost last in talent. Her talent compared to the other young ladies was almost zero. Nive dramatic poetry but poorly executed and could not compete with the natural talents of the other competitors. If Ms Lando intends to take part in any other pageants then she needs to concentrate on an entire performance package that can endure a one night pageant. She has the potential just needs a little more polishing.

Hats off to her chaperone Nakitta I know she has worked very hard and the rest of her team. A job well done.

But isn’t that the format that Miss World and Miss Universe takes?, The girls are judged in preliminary rounds on different days including swimwear etc and the best of the best move forward to the next round and the final.
Nadira made it in the top five implying that she was one of the best in the preliminaries.
She then went on and excelled in the final rounds making her the all round winner. I don’t see whats the problem here.
St. Lucia may have been better in the preliminaries but Nadira was better than her in the finals, including best intrview!; Hence Nadira won the crown.!!!

Congratulations Nadira! keep your head up and do you!

Bondieu imagine Nadira coming there and have to read all this negative garbage. What is wrong with Dominicans especially Dominican women? One thing I have come to learn is that people who are always taking shots at people are really miserable and empty themselves and do so to deflect attention from their own short comings. Women learn to pull your sisters up by learning SELF LOVE and INNER PEACE!

message to Dno. I would like you to read a daily mail or sun in the UK online edition and take a look at the comments below. The idea of articles like this is for people to be free to express their opinions. Mostly a comment would not be shown if it contains swearing and or sexually explicit language but other than that mostly everything gets printed. Read stories about serena williams with people calling her a man and trash and ghetto; these never get deleted yet still dno will not print a comment if you are negative about an individual. why is that dno, insults and all is in it. thats what make good reading in case you hadn’t noticed.

Too much fuss over miss Lando. . A queen is a queen. so many Miss Dominica’s that have been forgetten about and they seem to make a fuss over a few; favouritism if you ask me. All the past queens won their title through hard work and dedication and carried the same Miss Dominica title yet the committee and other Dominicans seem to fuss over a select few just because they won pagaents abroad. Nadira is no better than any other miss Dominica. Look at all the past queens and see what they are doing today. I know who I would pick as one of our most achieving Miss Dominica’s. The most successful ones should be mentioned as role models for our young women should aspire to be like. It should not be about how many titles you win but about what you have achieved since then.

Miss Lando does not have the height or talent for Miss Universe.Yes she needs to work on her mid section, the pics of her in her swimsuit on Facebook “Government of Antigua and Barbuda” are not flattering for a Queen. That does not take away from the fact that she is beautiful and was able to do well in her interview round. She won and we can all celebrate but her swimsuit pics were terrible.

The idea of the motorcade is a fantastic one. But I need to ask this “what exactly is an official welcome” I may be wrong but as if officials from the government should be included. In particular the Minister for Tourism and Legal affairs.

As for Nadira changing; that is bound to happen as one advances on life’s journey. What she needs to ensure is that she does not seek to change her identity, but rather to shape her destiny.

Go girl!!! You have made us proud and deserve to be celebrated!!!!!!!!!!!!

It can be very difficult being “Kalinago” in Dominica. Get to know and understand people before you make senseless comments. Nadira is the most humble Queen ever. I hope you stay that way girl. Why are some people filled with hate and envy for others?

I spoke to Nadira briefly, she is such a humble pleasant young lady to speak to. I used to speak to her before she become queen.

I must say Nadira has talent, she speaks very well, far better than many of our government officials which is a bloody shame.

In short, my major issue with these shows is that it allows them to model in a bikini or swim wear.

  23. Positive
    August 7, 2012

Come on people, the young lady did well for herself and for her country. Why all the negative vibes? Constructive criticism is always welcome. But too often we focus on bringing each other down instead of building each other up. Nadira did well. She’s a hard worker and a role model for many other young ladies. Success didn’t come easy to her, and it’s not fair that she be subject to all these insults. Congratulations to you Nadira…hold your head HIGH

What amazes me is that, if you were to ask all the individuals who post the negative comments to step up and take up the role to represent Dominica they would either back down or fail miserably at it. Their negative comments is just a reflection of themselves. That’s all.

CONGRATULATIONS Nadira, good luck in all your endeavors.

Is the same thing I am talking about. A negative, bitter nation. Jealousy and envy. It doesn’t matter what village she comes from, raise up in or live in. She is still a Dominican representing Dominica. A beautiful, talented successful Dominican. You all should have nothing negative to dispense. All you should have to say is greatful things, give her complements, thank her for a job well done and for representing Dominica well. Dominicans are too impossible. if she didn’t win, allyou would have criticized her. now she win alyou still bashing her. I am baffled, trying to wonder how to please this nation. Other countries would have loved to have and embrace such a BEAUTIFUL, TALENTED and INTELLIGENT young lady. Thank you Nadira for representing well. People like you make me proud to be a Dominican.

      August 8, 2012

You are right the success has gone to her head. She needs to be more humble and remember that this is just for a time. I remember in her interview before the miss Dominica pageant she said when she was in the Carib territory she could not walk or do much. I mean give me a break; the girl is making it seem like she had no life in the Carib territory. Like she was in prison or something. The country side is the best place to have a good childhood. You can run and walk anywhere. So even before she was miss Dominica, just the whole being in the pageant had already gone to her head. She needs to wake up and smell the coffee. Anyways congratulations to her on her win. She just needs to remember you don’t need to lie to kick it.

Nadira is Queen of Carnival not Royal queen of Dominica. It’s okay for her to take the bus. What every other Dominican drive? After her reign I’m assuming she’ll be getting on a jet plane away from Dominica, so do you expect them to buy her a car?
