Local Government Commissioner, John Fontaine has announced that the budget for this year’s National Day of Community Service (Jounen Koudmen) has increased from $200,000 last year to $250,000.
He made the announcement at the official media launch of Independence Celebrations 2017 held at the Government Information Service (GIS) office in Bath Estate on Wednesday.
“I am elated that in this year’s budget an additional sum of $50,000 has been approved for National Day of Community Service 2017,” he revealed.
Additionally, he said the procurement of a new dump truck will facilitate service delivery and enhance the community service product.
According to him the estimates and related documents for National Day of Community Service are been prepared for submission to cabinet for the approval.
Fontaine revealed that last year 109 projects were implemented island wide.
“We are hoping to increase this number to 120,” he stated.
Meantime, Fontaine said preparations for hosting the cultural shows are in an advance stage.
“The staff of the local government and community development department and the cultural division are all excited to ensure that seven semi-finals and three cultural finals are very successful,” he noted.
He continued, “Other areas for example; Miss Wob Dwiyet, Market Day with a Difference, other community-based activities and you heard of Heritage Day in Scotts Head, they are in an advanced stage of preparation.”
The National Day of Community Service is carded for Saturday, November 4th.
I didnt know there was a budget for community day of service. News to me. To my knowledge, community day of service was meant to be voluntary where the people in the respective communities all come together and put their resources (time energy and money) together to enhance their respective communities. To my knowledge, government never really had a hand in this apart from declaring the day a holiday. Respective truck drivers and trades men would volunteer their services alongside everyone else to maintain and develop their communities, homes etc. This is news to me the government has set a budget for community day of service. Not sure how i feel about it. someone help me with the pros and cons of this move by the government vs what i thought community day of service to be.
DNO seems to be talking about everything except the breaking news regarding our citizen Francisco Corallo boarding a jet plaine to Rome.
