The Nature Isle Toastmasters Club (NITC), like the entire Toastmasters community, believes that every young person has the potential to become a good communicator and leader, but this potential needs to be developed.
With this in mind, the club has launched the first Toastmasters International’s Youth Leadership Program (YLP) to be offered in Dominica. The programme’s unique eight-session, workshop-style design enables participants to develop this potential through practical experience.
The Youth Leadership Program is being coordinated by TM Diana Gittens CC, ALB along with TM Dorothy Jno. Baptiste CC, ALB as the assistant coordinator.
Twenty students from the Goodwill Secondary School are set to participate in this eight weeks program.
Clara Lee, a teacher for the twenty seven (27) years, who is currently the Form teacher of the students approached the Nature Isle Toastmasters Club for assistance in preparing her students to be competent leaders and communicators. She indicated that whilst the students have excelled academically, she saw the need to further prepare them to be Dominica’s future leaders.
The Youth Leadership Program will be held in the afternoons after school at the Goodwill Secondary School and each session will last for approximately two hours.
During these sessions participants will learn to:
• Overcome nervousness when speaking before an audience
• Organize and present ideas logically and convincingly
• Listen carefully to others’ ideas
• Offer advice to help others improve their speaking and leadership skills
• Participate in – and even lead – group discussion or meetings
Participants will also increase their self-confidence as they learn.
At the end of the eight weeks, students will be required to showcase the skills acquired by organizing and participating in a special event. Parents, representatives from the school and other community members will be present at this event. A certificate will be presented to each student who completes the training.
Toastmasters International is a world leader in communication and leadership development. It provides a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which members have the opportunity to develop effective communication and leadership skills through the completion of a series of organized self-paced basic and advanced projects which allow them to obtain increased self-confidence and personal growth.
