On Saturday 28th March 2015, the Scout Association of the Commonwealth of Dominica elected a new Executive at their Annual General Meeting (AGM).
The elected Officers are:
President: Mr. Sammy Wyke
Vice President: Rev. Lennox Timothy
Secretary: Mrs. Andrea Marie
Treasurer: Mrs. Magdalene Julien
Public Relations Officer: Dr. Mallet Marie
Assistant Secretary/Treasurer: Mrs. Marilyn Cuffy-Morris
Members: Mrs. Letitia Lestrade-Wyke, Ms. Veronne Nicholas, Mr. Danny Esprit, Mr. Marvin Marie, Mr. Anthony Commodore is the Immediate Past President.
Newly elected President, Mr. Sammy Wyke in his acceptance remarks said that this new Executive has its work cut out for it in order to strengthen Scouting in Dominica and looks forward to the full support of all members and parents in assisting the Executive to better the Scouting movement.
Further, he indicated that some of the immediate tasks of the new executive are to review the State of the Movement in Dominica, conduct a census of its members and plan a way forward, in collaboration with the membership, as well as to review and update the existing Constitution.
He said that it is imperative that Scouting moves forward through the National Association with everyone’s assistance, including the past President and Executive, working together with the incoming President and Executive and the Commissioners and general membership of the Scout Association of Dominica.
The main function of the Executive Committee in collaboration with the Council is to manage the affairs of the National Scout Association and promote the growth and welfare of the Scout Movement in Dominica.
Scouting is a worldwide Movement with forty (40) million members worldwide.
One major upcoming activity for the Association is the 2017 Caribbean Jamboree, which Dominica has accepted to host.
Planning for this event must begin in earnest, he noted.
I am very glad to see scouting is still alive and kicking, I wish more young persons would get involved. The composition of the executive is very interesting.
Best wishes.
I note Mr. Sammy Wyke as the new President of the D/CA Scouts Association.
However, and if my memory serves me right, according to the association’s constitution, a scout leader cannot hold the post of president of the association, but he can be chief commissioner.
Therefore Mr. Wyke being leader of the St. Alphonsus Scout troop, he might have to either give up the leadership of his troop, or the president of the scouts association.
The constitution has taken several revisions and is currently under review for the betterment of the entire movement. I guess they’ll update the general public on any revisions that is to come.
I’m just thankful that new life is being feed into the movement as those who have been there before have slowly watched it almost die.
As an old scouter, I’ll now make my services available to the movement again.
“We have our work cut out for us”, you could not have said it any better, Mr. Sammy Wyke, as you take on this important mantle of the leadership of the Scouting Movement in Dominica. Your dedication and service and your years of commitment augurs well for our youth in Dominica. I pray that you and your team will have the full support that you will need to take the Movement to a new level. Indeed, your work is cut out for you, no need to reinvent the wheel…..We are all looking forward to to 2017 as you undertake to host Caribbean Jamboree. Congratulations to you and your team! May God continue to bless and guide you.
