Night landing officially starts on Monday

The inaugural flight via night landing into the Melville Hall Airport is expected to take place on Monday evening.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit along with cabinet members and various stakeholders will be flown into Dominica from Antigua on a LIAT aircraft as part of a ceremonial observance of the “historic” moment.

A Win Air and Venzuelan ConViasa aircraft carrying the Venezuelan Ambassador to Dominica Carmen Martinez de Grijalva will land shortly after.

A ceremony will follow where addresses are expected from the Prime Minister, aviation personnel and other stakeholders at the airport.

Night landing is expected to enhance air access into Dominica and with just weeks to go before the staging of the World Creole Music Festival, some say it has come at an opportune time.

we so dont look in the future Melville Hall will always be a worry to the authorites there time will tell…
Its clear to see that it wont bear any major results…still a small minded approach of Development which wont have any major impact in the economy at all..

Melville Hall as too many flight risks to be a viable option in modern Day aviation!

And to get into a little politics .if the former government had already secured funding for an international airport why they could not present a manifesto to our people.and why they could not tell the people what they where going to do if they where elected

everyone is talking of international airport ,but lets face it .those international flight you all are talking about ,are they going to be filled with people coming to do buisness in dominica .are we saying that an international airport going to turn over buisness that much that international airlines are going to send these flights streight into da .in other words we are saying that these big airlines does not need to go to a hub like american has it hub in pueto rico where they use eagle to transfere there passangers to different part of the caribbean. the other air lines like air canada ,air france and continnental who doesnt have a connected airline uses liat .liat then island hop mearly because there is not enough passengers to fly directly to any destination .so tell us when there will be a flight coming streight to dominica .and last but not least i am out for the past 22 years i have never had problems with liat ,but i have seen many including my wife getting home.although she is not a dominican we both welcome night landing

It’s all well and good to say that dominica needs an international airport, but do we really have the traffic flow that will be able to sustain an international airport. I do believe that the extension of night landing is a great progress, and from there on we can move on as seems fit. It does not matter how many other islands have international airport but are they cost effective. We cannot make Dominica a better place based on what other countries have or do not have, let’s look @ our needs. In regard to Dominica moving forward, it has to first begin in the mind of our people. When one constantly sees thing from a negative aspesct how can one progress. When we constantly fight the political battles as to who’s party in power rather than as a people “is that what’s best for the country” whether or not u support the political party, only when we work together for the good of our country we will progress. To the politicians stop coming and full your pockets thru greed and corruption.

Let me first congratulate the government and people of Dominica for finally getting the necessary approval for night landing. I personally have issues with it because of the lack of lighting around the airport compared to the other islands, however, I guess the experts know best. I will not say that I will “NEVER” land at night but it certainly will not be the first, second or third option for legitimate reasons that some of the illiterates commenting on there won’t understand.

While persons are seeking to make political mileage with this initiative, it must be noted that for 10 years of this 20 YEARS being mentioned, it is this very same DLP administration that was in office. Moreover, it must also be noted that the previous administration prior already had plans in place to build an international airport where the land had already been purchased.

For those who may now Wet their underwear and panties replying to me and denying this, I already have a response: JUST ASK THE PRESENT DLP GOODWILL PARL. REP. – JULIUS C TIMOTHY.

It is very correct to note that all this “first time ever, never before” comments are being made, we should really be here discussing ways to further maximize use of an international airport which should have already been built in Dominica. This was prevented because of the Dominican poopoo politics which is being demonstrated here on DNO daily by about 50-80 people who comment on stories everyday.

It is also very correct to note that infrastructural development is no excuse for illegal acts to be committed by public officials.

I will end by saying again, that I hope that intellectual and mental capacity of the few people commenting here does not represent that of the majority of the persons living in Dominica.

Now go right ahead and bash me all day and all night long.

    Cheers.

@lycan: Hey what a wonderful idea, It’s amazing what great minds dominicans have…things is,the gov’t will never invest in something like this you see, when you start saying things like international hotels will invest in dominica,Nassief which owns the Fort young hotel and a major supporter of this gov’t will think they will loose their status as the leading hotel in dominica, they will discourage the gov’t to take such actions…so instead the gov’t will talk crap like our cannot sustain these types of capita; investments..that is (BS)….the thing is it seems it will have to take a dominican who has found themselves on cash to return home and make that type of investment, and finance another gov’t into power,in order to accomplish these lovely ideas of yours.Hopefully one day,but we will get there my dear, that is a lovely idea, that way we can keep the current melville hall airport….thats a capital investment i will keep in mind when that day comes for true progress in our country,I have not given up on my country and our people….keep putting these great ideas out there, the day for fulfillment will come to pass someday. All the best!!

The late night flight will be there during Carnival, WCMF, Christmas, Ross Students etc.

Whats happening on monday at Melville Hall Dominicans should not be fooled this Govt has some many issues on the plate as the MOST CORRUPTED GOVERNMENT THUS FAR IN THE HISTORY OF DOMINICA…..

Its a side show to fool the People just Poltical Hype to side track those who have 5 mins retaining brain elements….

Can any surporter of this Govt be Brave enough to ask Mr.Skerrit why is it and what the Benefits of Building a state house costing excess of 27 Million Dollars at this time when all the sectors in Dominica and below par, folks cant afford to buy season festival tickets…these are the hard issues not a Media hype about a DH8 aircraft landing at night….the next shedule flight begins..when on tue or thur…dont think i saw anything loaded in Liat flight system for a late commerical depature.
Slow down i know Dominicans get excited for small issue which doesnt bear any fruit at all…

What does Dominica Produce is the sufficient cash flow on the island….Heard Cruise Vessel pulling out soon, yet no Brave Dominican can challenge this Govt on spending on that state house.

All the do is call the radio talk show…its simple just need approx 6,000 Dominicans in the first instance to walk peacful with white only through Roseau…then its hits the media both Locally,Regional and International….then the feds will be more interesting with the call of help and will show more determination to work with the Righteous Groups for Good Governance,

Dominican need to think hard and stop saying when this govt will fall when God means it too..
If you have clothes to wash go and pray will someone wash it for you….hmm
Unless someone or a grouping doesnt start that kind of hard and blunt mesures nothing will work God helps those who helps themselves think Dominicans are cowards it speaks volumes in how the speak at talk shows etc…TALK TALK and More Talk

I wonder if the Government officials really read our comments? because we can be economical, draw the plan for an International Jet Landing Strip with a tower and form a link to Melville Hall Airport via a Tunnel road or Train Service to a large Departure Lounge area with all amenities.

It will be just like a link like , from London Gatwick to London Heathrow Airports. I t will not take that much and then in building that simple facility, we can advertise Dominica to eco hotels world wide to invest iin Dominica thus keeping our image. Major Resorts like Sandals and Marriott can have an eco resort in Dominica.

Cargo Airlines will be able to take our produce further like ATI International, Laparkan and Amerijet. We should also invest in the developing our port some more by adding a landing area for Sea Planes like Sea Bourne Airlines which currently serve the USVI.

OUR AIM SHOULD BE TO MAKE DOMINICA ACCESIBLE. WE SHOULD BE FIRST IN EVERYTHING IN THIS REGION, NOW IS OUR TIME TO SHINE.

Hey I just could not agree with you more, all your points were very much valid, and something very important stand out.GROWTH…which is what we should be looking into, and the current change in structure does not bring any growth,so in essence, this project was wastful, even the idea of it is depressing for those of us who really want to see our country move forward.

You know one of the frequent arguments that persons who oppose a proper jet landing facility/international airport say is this,we do not have a current vibrant economy to sustain that type of airport, but isn’t this of itself tells alot the way we think of our country? because if at all we believed that our country will someday have a more vibrant economy then we would actually be preparing for it,and not wait for it to arrive then try to obtain the necesaary capital to sustain it.That type of thinking will get dominica no where. Our country is a reflection of our peoples’ mentality.I love your column nice job. I would like to see you continue to write some more columns like these, hopefully some persons will change their tread of thought.

Night Landing was suppose to be a stop gap measure. Then it moved to a the only remedy for our air access woes and was touted by the government as the best and most economical way to go. Ralph Gonzalves was even invited on a political platform to inform Dominicans that we do not need an international airport. St. Vincent and Dominica were then in the same boat. However Ralph is now embarking on an international aiport for St. Vincent and sees it as the single most important project to transform St. Vincent into the new millenium. He may create a white Elephant like the other OECS islands but he’ll have an elephant and have the potential to do so much more. We won’t. How can we accept this.

We also need to keep things in perspective. The contruction and implementation of night landing was woefully inefficient. The project took way too long with major cost overuns. Did they even release to the public the full cost of the project. Looking at the duration of time required for night landing to be implemented we should have started the international aiport at the same time if we hope to finish jet landing or an internation strip by 2020. So we are again 10 years behind the last OECS country to implement and international airport.

So we celebrate the achievement but once again Dominica is last. Where is our national pride. Will we always be content to celebrate mediocrity or will we ever be visionary and leap frog to the front. Will we ever be leaders again and honor the ancenstors.

    Night Landing will not address
The high fares we pay as Dominicans to travel
The baggage restrictions we have to bear
The lack of chartered excursions directly to the Island. Which are so important for festival type tourism.

So while we celebrate let us think criticaly and expect more of the people who are entrusted to lead. Let us invoke a desire to be better than last.

  19. September 18, 2010

@Miami: I agree with the writer next step until we get our international airport is to beautify the surrounding what about developing the CDC area instead of all the little houses mayby some guest houses would be better and a very nice place to sit outside to enjoy the sea breeze or a very good D’ican restaurant. The Melvin Hall area can hold 3 good guest houses, night club, restaurant , and keep the grass around the airport as low as possible always. The Govrt is in the building houses business why not build it up the area and then rent it out to DOMINICANS

Please appreciate what Skerrit has done for DA….Also the FAA rules for an International airport verses a Jet Airport is different. DA can’t sustain and afford an International Airport at this point in time. A Jet Airport is much more affordable and can accomodate the bigger Airliners.

Good News for Dominica, Thanks to God from where this blessing flow soo far and to the Government of Dominica and the support of the people. Night Landing will bring a significant amount in the Country. For those of us who need an International Airport, lets think simple, all we need to do is to pave the strip for international jets and form a link via railway to Melville hall airport for immigration and customs purposes, thats more economical.

If you have night landing, you best have a hotel near the airport for people to overnight since the road coming back is treacherous at this time and ripe for accidents. It would be something else if the road were in top condition but it is just the opposite with no completion date in sight.

I drove down from Melville Hall Airport to Roseau four weeks ago and that road is a story in itself. There are no lights, the corners are horrible and barriers to protect drivers are a figment of my imagination. I can see an increase in the number of vehicular accidents in the Marigot area. We have to do better with our physical infrastructure.

    September 17, 2010

Congratulations is in order…but what we need is direct air access from North America and Europe, which are major stayover tourism source markets for Dominica, hence the need for an INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT which will accommodate Air France, British Airways, Air Canada, Jet Blue, West Jet, British Midlands International, American Airlines, US Airways, Continental Airlines, China Airlines, Lufthanza, Iberia, KLM Dutch Airlines, Caribbean Airlines (Trinidad and Tobago) Air Caraibes (Guadeloupe/MArtinique) and the list can go on. This should help to expand our stayover tourism sector and light manufacturing and agricultural sector creating more jobs for our people thus ensuring more money in their pockets to provide food on their table and shelter, healthcare, education etc for their families. Obviuosly an international airport is not a means to it all but it will certainly help…

While official night will take effect from Monday it will not attract new airlines into Dominica. It will still be LIAT, American Eagle, Winair, and the Venezuelan airline, CONVIASA. Certainly we will expect to see an increase in air arrivals but this will not cause any significant contribution to foreign exchange..I stand to be proven wrong but for now I stand by my word that night landing will not create any significant new business from air travel to Dominica.

I believe that the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica should seriously consider international air access to enable Dominica to attract more tourism business. In the case of air access, the horse (airport) before the cart (hotels and resorts) formula will work. It has worked for most islands and most recently the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis, and will soon work for St Vinvent and the Grenadines. Prime Minister Ralph Gonzalves is nearing the completion of the International Airport at Argyle on the south east of the big island, St Vincent. So too must Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit seriously consider the construction of an International airport in the North east of Dominica…to boost our tourism, light manufacturing, agriculture (cut flowers, exotic fruits, fish export (Tilapia etc), and our edu tourism (Ross and All Saints)…

If Dominica prefers to remain uncompetitive and continue to lose our workforce to the region because there just isn’t enough work for our many high school and college graduates then we can do without an INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT but if we want to keep the majority our trained people home and attrack back home those persons who have gone and made a livelihood overseas overseas then by all means let’s sacrifice and build the INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT for us today and our future generation…

I am happy for the Melvin Hall Airport anything is better than what we had before!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But, what happen to the surroundings of the airport especially when one is leaving the airport.
It is very unattractive around the airport especially that bridge.

When government takes up a project like this the hospital needs to be upgrade and the police station. The airport area is so very dark and the drive to town is so dark and boring. The airport
needs an express postal service, a gift store, a nd foreign currency exchange booth.

Around the airport is beautiful and with the upgrade of the air port we want to see condos, apts, hotels, pharmacy and supermarkets. Palm trees, signs and lots of lights!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The is no decent restaurant in the area and by the time you get to the capital all the restaurant doors are close. If one does not want to drive all the way to town there isn’t any motels.

We need condos, apts and hotels in the area not even a decent restaurant.and by the time you
get to town all restaurant doors are close. some times one does not want to drive all the way
to roseau but can stay off at a express hotel or motel.

A express postal service is needed at the air port and a gift store.

@DAMNASS: So you really think that an International Airport is the way to go?

Have you seen how empty those same airports are most of the time? These airports are only busy in peak times, and even then the size and scope of the airports are hardly sustainable.

Does Dominica have the kind of economic activity to sustain the flight activity to deem an international airport viable? (Business persons, tourists, foreign officials, etc going and coming on a regular basis)

I would love to have international flights land here on a regular basis… but do you honestly believe that we have the volume to justify those flights and fill the seats of those planes?

It’s not just about having what other countries have; it should be about what suits Dominica now and in the near to mid-term future.

Great news…. But tell me a ceremony for what nah. My people too like to have ceremony for everything…. Just a bunch of blah blah blah. That’s more of a politics speech than anything else. Again waste of tax payers money. Indeed it’s a milestone we have accomplished but let’s keep the ball rolling………
