Participate in independence celebrations – NYC president to youth

NYC president Jahisiah Benoit
NYC president Jahisiah Benoit

In light of calls by the opposition to boycott certain independence events, National Youth Council (NYC) President Jahisiah Benoit is calling on all young people to participate fully in this year’s celebrations.

Speaking to Dominica News Online on Thursday Benoit pointed to the importance of independence celebrations and said all must play their part.

“The NYC would like to underscore the critical importance of independence celebrations to each and every Dominican and that we all need to play our part in making sure that every year the celebrations are something that we can be proud off,” he said.

On Thursday morning leader of the United Workers Party (UWP), Lennox Linton, called on citizens to boycott the National Youth Rally and the National Day Parade to protest against what what he described as the “unconstitutional   installation of legendary divider, hater, boycotter and persecutor” Charles Savarin to the post of President.

According to Benoit everyone has the right to freedom of expression and they can go about trying to persuade other towards their opinion. “For every citizen within the country, for any citizen that has a particular opinion can go about trying to persuade persons toward their opinion but as the council we want to encourage every single Dominican, especially the young people, to keep the focus and attention on independence: that is to celebrate our 35 years as a country,” he said.

He noted that there should be no reason for the public to become distracted from the goal of unifying the country.

“We want to encourage young people from the length and breadth to continue to participate actively in the celebrations and development of our nation,” he said.

Yes mama. Boycot the youth rally. The PM said he has no respect for the law, the education minister is teaching a doctrine of hypocrisy.
And children, children, we are not going to the Independence day celebrations. The president is evil and the prime minister is corrupt.
And children, children, do you know what occured when the communion was given to the president at Bagatelle? Well, well we go talk about that.

The President of the NYC has his democratic right to support any political party. Take into consideration the youth rally is a major aspect of our independence celebration and school activity. IF YOU WERE THE PRESIDENT OF THE NYC WHAT WOULD U TELL THE YOUTH? The UWP lacks political maturity and failed to educate the people of Dominica where and how the constitution was broken. They thought they would secure hands up with a ill conceive approach asking to boycott two of our vital events.

Good move Lennox. Authority can be challenged and beaten. Social movements can be pivotal forces.
Disruptive activism works. According to Political Science Professor Frances Fox Piven: “Ordinary people (have) power.” They do so “when they rise up in anger and hope, defy the rules…disrupt (state) institutions (and) propel new issues to the center of political debate.” Things are too far gone. It’s too late for scattered reforms. An entire makeover is needed. Disruptive power perhaps can change things. There’s no other way. Win or lose, it’s vital to struggle for what’s right.

heard mr Linton on Q this morning ,saying his kids will not be attending. I think its something personal he has against the PM and the PRESIDENT . And wants the whole country to fight his cause . That’s so selfish of him.IF and when he becomes prime minister, I wonder if he will remember this disrespect?

Lennox should realise that after 13 years those tactics don’t work…it will only make you stay in the opposition. Be more positive instead of always being negative and opposing everything. Go out and enjoy the Dominica’s Independence with all Dominicans stop dividing the country. If you want to be a leader concerned about Dominica’s future you cannot always want to be critizing and dividing cause you only preaching to your followers that’s all.

Is the honourable young man satisfied that the constitution was followed by his government? Is that a good example to the youth? Is that the type of governance that the young man would like the youth of Dominica to emulate?
One wonders why the loud silence of the National Youth Council on the more important national and constitutional issues that confront us. If the National Youth Council is truly concerned about the health of the nation, it cannot take or be seen to be taking such a narrow, hypocritical, partisan position on such fundamental national issues. If the Council felt it should have remained silent on the process of electing the president of Dominica, then it should do the said and remain even more silent on this issue to protect its own integrity.

Well as long as he isn’t supporting our ideology or do as we asked, he is taking a hypocritical, partisan position on such fundamental national issues. He shouldn’t be independent or take a different vie from us. What is democracy coming to? You have just call for our youth to disrespect our independence celebration that we as a nation use as a means of uniting the country for you all personal and partisan benefit but refer to the gentleman in such terms.

You should spend some more time studying the Constitution. You should also spend some more time considering the sequence of events and put them in the proper perspective. It just might occur to you that there was no violation.

So should a country just let the prime minister do as he please and turn a blind eye? we have taken and taken there comes a time when enough is enough, it’s a peaceful protest that says we are not sitting by idle and letting evil and unconstitutional things happen in our sweet little beautiful island, All the hate speeches are coming from the party in power and as for the president his history says it all, THE TIME TO STAND FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS TRUTH AND JUSTICE IS NOW!! It’s the same way when Mr. King, Rosa Parks and Marlcom X stood for justice they were criticized and were they wrong? NO! sometimes we just blind sided because the person doing the ill act we love so much, we must put love of country before love of government, only in Dominica i see people cannot demonstrate and that sends a bad message because is only in communist places people are not allowed to stand for their rights.

It nice to see the president of the nyc stand on the side of the youths. Now we need u to use ur influence and position to petition on behalf of all youths the cdeation of jobs that they can provide for themselves.as a youth of this country I wud like if u cud be as vocal on all things of national interest. Stand for justice.don’t be selective in what u choose to speak out about there are youths on both sides of the isle.

i hope this is a sign that we will hear more from the NYC, cause having now called out the opposition leader i expect him to be calling out all leaders who are involved in perceived divisive activities. so i will leave my judgement of you for later, for if you prove to be just another mouth piece for the party in power, your position and your organisation in general will suffer for being openly political.

      October 18, 2013

he did not call out theopposition.

He is speaking to the youth. What kind of leadership is this is he were to ask the youth to boycott the event for politcal reasons? Independence is not about politics and politricing. It’s about us coming together as one people to unite and celebrate irrespective of our varying opinions.

its a time when we invite others to come partiipate and come view our events, yet we are asking our own nationals to boycott the event.

what message is that sending to the outside visitors?

Don’t come for independence – there might be boycotts at all events.

that’s the issue i am having – why at this time of unity and celebration?

ask the people to vote and make their voice heard- that’s the most evffective form of “boycott” get rid of the government by not voting them in.

I wonder if you have read the constitution? If the PM breach the constitution I am all for it to take him to court but not to devide our nation and more so the youth. Bad idea.

      • October 17, 2013

You should think before you post your comments because you have it backward and up side down because the person who beached the constitution is your PM but what I would suggest you do is go back to the drawing board please use the brain that God gave you try to think for yourself instead of repeating what others say to you when you allow that to happen you are in trouble, so I would suggest that you take time out of your day and read educate your mind, because a mind is a terrible thing to wast.

        October 18, 2013

Namby, get a life and read the constitution. It appears that you are the one doing as you are asked by your political leaders etc. There is a constitutional issue, one that must be addressed by the court. In order for it to be addressed the issue must be taken to the court. Two sides are interpreting the law, constitution differently so it will take legal minds to settle the issue. Stop being used and do the right thing.

I have been reliable informed that those two parades are going to be like a DLP rally. I understood, the executive of the DLP has asked all its members, particularly in the Roseau area to dress in Red in order to show support for Skeritt. Unfortunately, as far as the supporters of the DLP are concerned, whatever Skeritt does with the Constitution is off no concern to them.

    • October 17, 2013

Skeritt, as PM of Dominica, has the right to conduct the Independence Celebration as he see fit. Lennox has the right to have his followers DRESS however he want them to DRESS and FOLLOW ACCORDINGLY.

Well he has a right to make that call..

But are the youths of Dominica really conscious of affairs rule of law etc…

Guess if the youth of Dominica understood the past and present happens surrounding this man as President they would be able to be blunt and stand firm…

Sadly it’s not in the Dominica’s DNA whereby youth and other civic institutions are stand outs..

They buckle for personality rather than the issue at hand…

sums up the island as the Poorest in the Eastern Caribbean because of not upholding Integrity!

    • October 17, 2013

This is Dominica’s Independence, NOT LENNOX’ NOR CHARLES’ INDEPENDENCE.

I hope the young people living on the Island will NOT BOYCOTT INDEPENDENCE because of their party affiliation.

      October 17, 2013

@ Saltfish, That is the vicious attics that the UWP and its supporters use to stifle people who have different views to what they believe. You did not see that young man at any rally wearing a red shirt; and even though you did – so what!!! You WUP people are bullies and you are creating bullies among our adults who want to pass it on to the young people. That is why a lot of Labourites stay quiet. You call on Q 95, you write comments on DNO and the time they realize its in opposition to what they UWP believe, they begin to criticize you, call you stupid and degrade them. when you don’t hear comments either on radio or on the Internet, its not because they are in the minority. But they will put their voices on the ballot. So don’t be so shocked when the DLP wins again.
