Petite Savanne evacuees to move to new accommodations

Ninety-four residents of Petite Savanne, who were evacuated from the community and are now being housed at the Dominica Grammar School after the passage of Tropical Storm Erika, will soon be moving to new accommodations.

Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, said on Tuesday that government is in discussion with private property owners and guest houses who have indicated their willingness to accommodate them, albeit at a cost.

“The state will cover the cost associated with both boarding and lodging at those guest houses,” he stated.

He noted that discussions have been finalized with at least one property in terms of what the owner is demanding and what the government has agreed to pay.

He said two others will be sending proposals by the end of the day.

“Hopefully by the end of the working day so that cabinet can be in a position tomorrow (Wednesday) to ratify the proposal of the Minister of Finance in respect to that,” he remarked.

Skerrit said discussions will be held with the residents on assigning them to different properties, taking into consideration variables such as not wanting to split families.

“The new accommodation, albeit on a temporary basis, would cause them to be much more comfortable than where they are now at the Grammar School and also create more privacy for all of them,” he said.

The Prime Minister pointed out that the same approach will be taken for residents of Dubique.

    Barbara Saunders,
There is a fundamental difference between
    hatred and injustice.
I am not the one creating discord or hatred .
The existing state of affairs that is happening in Dominica.
I was not raised to hate; and do not have space in my life for such,
However when people are being treated unfairly
it creates hatred, and the anger is not always leashed out on the people who create it.
    Society pays-robbery, drugs and violence.
I will reiterate that it is UNJUST to have evacuees in schools and health centers when there are
empty government apartments set aside for Skerritt supporters.
They should break into them and occupy.
The next generation is already here!
They are not going to sit idly by and scrape crumbs, they are going to stand up.

Suit yourself Merina McKenzie! Activate your denial mode! Please don’t allow me to take away your daily purpose in life! Convince yourself you have no time for hate and don’t hate, but out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

As for the new generation already being here and going to stand up, of course they will and just like Erica did not discriminate, their anger and resentment built up through all the hate talk and action will also not discriminate.

This is my last word, as I do not intend to engage you any further in this waste of energy!

      Peace!

    Real Facts,
In those days, your family could afford
    in your backward and condescending
language “maid” because they were been
    paid 15-20 wk.
Masa days are gone! I bet you do not have one where you are now.
I remember my mother would cook in hotels, guess houses and homes and her take home pay could barely pay the rent
Thank God for good extended families at home and abroad, who subsidized and assisted my mother to take care of us.
However, we rose and succeeded quickly and enable my mother to quit and stay home.
My mother was a victim of the so call ‘bourgeoisie’ exploiting system,

    • September 16, 2015

The people of Bath Estate are Dominicans as well.
They had a right to vote for who they wanted on the “rigged” election.
When Skerritt requested help for the devastation of Domonica,
the assistant came for Dominicans not for “Red Clinic”.
      The world is watching!
If this crap continues I will write to the United Nation, Caricom and the other donors with signatures
      from citizens.

When the Government negotiated the loan for the construction of these apartment houses in Bath Estate and Elmshall there was an outcome and an economic impact that the Cabinet had in mind.

In terms of the outcome government has always articulated targeting single working mothers with children paying way over $1,000.00 monthly rent but earning under $2,500.00 a month. While persons may be seeing these apartments closed there is certainty in believing that negotiations have already started for acquiring these apartments – applications of interest by as much as 800 applicants have already been received by the Housing Division; an established committee has already started the recommending process ; the Ministry of Housing would have started drafting the Cabinet Paper seeking Cabinet’s approval with their methodology.

Impact wise banks will provide applicants credit to pay government upfront while government will reinvest these funds in more apartment houses yielding 300 in 5…

Thai is a bunch of ‘BS’- this is a disaster.
The people at Grammar School should be placed in those houses
      at least temporary.
Do not be oblivious to the fact that Skerritt is holding on the houses to ensure
that only his supporters get them-you are not that
      naive?

    • September 16, 2015

Since you have so much information, it appears that you are of the persons
      evacuees should be contacting.

What about the unoccupied new 63 apartments in Bath Estate and Elmshall owned by the Government of Dominica? Why incur substantive rental costs when the government has these empty apartments? The evacuees can be temporarily housed in them.

    • Phillip Joseph
      September 15, 2015

There is a cost associated with any and every thing that’s done so even if the government decides to house evacuees temporarily in the 63 new unoccupied apartments in Bath Estate and Elmshall it will cost the government and that cost could be as substantive as the rental costs you speak about. Remember, total cost can be direct and indirect.

    NOTICE FOR ACTION

If some persons in this situation would be willing to take up residence (albeit temporarily) at private dwellings and offer home making services in support of that household..I personally would be willing to take in one helper to assist my wife with the children..If even 20 persons in Dominica have that need we could see a system of reciprocity. Dominicans helping each other and also helping to reduce the total cost to government.
Interested persons, leave contact information below. Of course there will be a vetting process.

It seems like you looking for a maid. Did they say that they wanted to do home making service? ( MAID) Sakwey copawezon. Not because they come from Petite Savanne and they have nothing at this moment you have to look down on them. These people need their own place and privacy. Most of them were well off in their community with huge houses that came with everything from spoon up to swimming pools .. It is unfortunate they are in such situation because of a natural disaster, so watch what you say. I know some of you Dominicans (especially those who live in Roseau area) think differently of people who come from the country like they are some lower class of people or they tebeh and have nothing. These people are proud people, so give them the respect they deserve. What happened to you? Go help your wife with your household chores and kids….Some people too rude eh.

Is this called for? I would never think of that.
Justkum made an excellent suggestion. Does this mean they are looking for a maid? I think you misunderstood the comments.
I realize that they should be treated with dignity. Ask yourself, when they re-locate at residences, what will they be doing? They may be happy to help, to do what they can. They may also offer to help. People like to be occupied. It gives them a sense of well-being. They may also be happy with the family whom they reside with. This does not mean they will be treated indifferently.
This reminds me when I resided in D/ca, we had servants (excuse me, maids.) :)
My parents, respectful, disciplined and strict taught their children accordingly. We dared not be rude to them. We respected them and treated them courteously.
Granted, not everyone is like that. Whatever status, this is the manner in which we should treat others. Likewise on this Website and wherever we may be.

It’s a bit shallow thinking to assume that because a person works as a maid or does homemaking that they are looked down on. Neither is this a contract between employer/employee..it is a proposition that could appear feasible to both parties..Also odd to assume that everybody requiring help at home lives in Roseau. Case in point, I live in the countryside. On the other hand, this suggestion may not apply to all but certainly could be applicable to some at the end of the day it’s only a suggestion in the whole scheme of things. It would offer a temporary solution to the problem and save Government some good money..Cheers!

    • September 16, 2015

Every evacuee does not want to be an indenture servant.
If you have a need for a housemaid, you should place an ad
      and pay for one.
Do not exploit the poor people, some of whom are still in morning .
If that is the best help you can offer keep it.?

    • September 16, 2015

      Justkum
If you need a babysitter or housekeeper you should pay for one.
Do not try to add to the evacuees sorrow by exploiting them.
They have no desire to be your indentured servants.
Most of them had good lives.
Someone living in your household is part of your family; chores
      should be handled as such.
They are not hungry. Most of them worked for themselves-
Bay leaf. Toolmaker, fishing, farming and their drink of longevity “zayid”.

Here is where love for country comes in. There are two huge apartment buildings in Bath Estate and Elm shall why not make some arrangement to house the people? Those who are working may be able to pay a low rent and keep supplying them with the relief sent to them.

    • September 15, 2015

      • September 16, 2015

They can be furnish with donations and grants like everything else.
Skerritt want to make sure the recipients of those houses are all
        his “cohorts”.
Which is so wrong and unjust.
Securing houses for people who are already
situated, while evacuees are been housed at schools are ridiculous.
The evacuees should storm and occupy the apartments.

        Merina McKenzie

It is people like you who are turning Dominicans into the hate-filled, cynical, bad-mouthed clan that we are fast becoming.

You speak as if you have facts, you even speak of wrong and injustice all on the basis of the imagination of your mind. There are people who will not analyse what you are saying but just take it and run with it. You even suggest that the evacuees storm the apartments and take them over.

Are the apartments ready for occupation with the necessary infrastructure? Is there something wrong with the plans which the government is making to basically construct a new village with the petro casa houses? I personally cannot fault the way in which the welfare of these people has been taken care of. Where is the injustice? Lady, you all will not want to see or hear what the next generation of Dominicans will be like after you all have incited hatred and rebellion without reasonable cause.

        Please be careful madame!

      • sad
        September 16, 2015

You think furnishing the apartment with the basic going to be more than paying a guest house every month for who knows how long?
