PM heads to Morocco

Green area shows the location of Morocco on the African map

The advancement of Dominica/Morocco relations will be high on the agenda as Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit leads a two-man delegation to the kingdom for an official visit.

According to a release from the Government Information Service (GIS) the delegation left Dominica on Monday and while in the Kingdom of Morocco talks are expected to be held with King Mohammed VI and for the first time with Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane, and Saad-Eddine El Othmani Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.

It is expected that the talks will further strengthen ties between the two countries.

The GIS release states that Morocco has been making a contribution to Dominica’s agricultural sector through a grant of high grade fertilizer but the flagship project to date is the construction of a 58-room state of the art hotel in Portsmouth between the two governments.

Dominica now has 31 students undertaking programmes of study in a number of disciplines as part of a Scholarship Programme offered by the Government of Morocco.

The Prime Minister is accompanied by Cabinet Secretary Steve Ferrol.

Skerro doesn’t care about human rights. Look at the countries he aligned himself with Chavez, Castro, China, Libya and now Morocco. What these countries have in common? HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATION.

I wonder what would be said if the PM didn’t travel to lobby and negotiate on behalf of Dominica :?:

Maybe he would be called lazy or something. Don’t you think?

May God bless Dominica and may the winds of the Almighty forever push this country forward, no matter what the people wish on THEMSELVES or their leaders. Lord hear the prayers of the diligent at heart. I am Dominican, I want my country to bloom. Protect us oh Lord. For words have power. Amen

rubbish rubbish rubbish, Skerrit with all due respect needs to strengthen his ties with the students in Morocco whose votes he needs next election, he needs to deliver the long awaited summer stipend, because the number of students studying in morocco is actually dwindling, and F.Y.I there are not 31 dominca students in Morocco, more like the reverse 13, the students are abused, and manipulated someone should start a petition for the ceasation of the moroccan scholarship

Wonder if Skerrit will find it necessary this time to call at london to “give support ” to the Dominica Olympic team, just as he did four years ago in Bejing. Maybe he will even attend the reception for “heads of state” the Queen is hosting on the occasion of the Olympics? Who knows?

Man, I must say my fellow Dominicans are shallow minded. You guys said some of the same about the late and beloved Prime Minister Rosie Douglas. “Oh, he’s always traveling…why doesn’t he stay home more…why is meeting with foreign people…why, why, why” You people are stuck in cave man times and it does not matter what anyone does or say, it won’t change a thing about your poor judgment and lack of vision.

Parents with children in Morocco are complaining, the scholarships are substandard and not recognized, lessons are taught in foreign language, no text books to do home studies and so on, the idea is just to pretend that they are doing so much, i know of some parents that is calling back home their child, Too much politics.

Dominica as a Nation achieves less and will continue as they are extremely timid..

Would Never ever attempt to have a investor consider Dominica….they a begging island who is rich with wealth of resources, but many policy makers and their Corrupt Regime Suck the blood out of that wonderful island.

All this Corrupt Leader is doing is filling and preparing himself to win again the next election while keeping the citizens in the dark knowing they will NEVER RESIST HIS REGIME!

Isnt Dominica Rated the Poorest in the Eastern Caribbean under this Labour Party watch for over 12 years….haha

He can travel till he gets seat sick on the plane, but he will always continue to be fruitless because he lacks vision and unable to create a basic “PLAN OF ACTION” the bloke is a kid so as usual comes up with crumbs! which his citizens rejoice due to them being ignorant to the MAX!

considering that the pm is never in the country and
considering that he makes $1000 every night he stays out,
I will suggest that this is a clever trick to raise funds for the next elections to bribe more people with their own TAX PAYERS’ MONEY

A serious question mark hangs over Skerrit’s poor judgment in agreeing to establish diplomatic ties and an official visit to Rabat, given Morocco’s continuing occupation of Western Sahara and the worsening human rights situation there. Morocco’s military has occupied Western Sahara and waged a brutal war of repression against the Sahrawi people for the past 36 years. Sahrawis risk arrest, imprisonment and torture simply for daring to speak out against the occupation. Human rights defenders have been particularly targeted by Moroccan security forces over the years. PM Rosie Douglas supported the plight of W-Sahara and would never sell them out to Morocco for a vote at the UN and a few pennies for a hotel and a few scholarships.

This is a good sign. Let’s hope it continues. It was also a pleasure to know that Mammy and others are always tuned to Q95 and they cannot resist the urge to call Lennox, Angelo and Matt.

The fact is Matt had it all wrong this morning. He spoke repeatedly of the right of the PM to inform the people of his whereabouts instead of focusing on the socio-political and legal responsibility of the PM vs the right of the people who elected him to know of his whereabouts.

The PM is not managing his private company nor are we in a “dictatorship” as some may suggest.-at least not yet. This is supposed to be a democracy of the people, by the people for the people.

Putting aside all the legal requirements of the Constitution in terms of the appointment of a Acting Prime Minister by the President in the absence of the Prime Minister, it seems to be a matter of common courtesy and respect to inform the nation of the travels of the PM either before or after, taking into account other factors such as security concerns and exigencies.

Obviously, had Dominicans not been expressing concerns with regard to the frequent disappearance of the PM on foreign trips, coupled with the vigilance of a citizen who alerted the nations through a telephone call to Q95 from Melville Hall Airport, GIS would most likely have kept quiet on the PM’s travel.

For me this is all part of the call for transparent, openness and accountability in our governance and nothing more. For example, we now know that the PM is going to discuss Dominica’s agricultural sector through a grant of high grade fertilizer without the Minister of Agricultural or any technical official from the concerned Ministry. Furthermore, in spite of the scientific studies that show that the fertilizer from Morocco is bad for the Dominica soil – we see our PM on a mission to get more of that fertilizer. Hence, this opens up more debate, which is good for a thriving democracy

Hmm – a grant for high grade fertilizer. Why not a grant to help boost local production of organic manure/compost/fertilizer. We all know that this chemical fertilizers are destroying our land, polluting our water, and negatively affecting our health. I am amaze at how comfortable and happy we are with short term solutions that result in long term problems. I thought the banana industry and what it did to our land/environment and people would have been a wake up call

You are so right!! Wish I could shake your hand. why aren’t they seeking grants that would make a contribution sustainable production? A grant that results in the establishment of agro-processing plant where farmers can have an outlet and an incentive to produce!!!
A grant for fertilizer is indeed myopic.
