The Dominica government says it needs to set the record straight, following suggestions that it failed to assist a Dominican woman who was awaiting urgent surgery in Trinidad and Tobago.
A local radio station, Q95 recently raised EC$48,000 for cancer patient Shernel Prince –her father Mathew Prince had earlier been granted a loan of EC$50,000 by a corporate citizen, to help pay the bill for the EC$80,000 operation in Port of Spain.
DNO reported at the time that Prince expressed disappointment that the Dominica Government had failed to provide at least some of the financial assistance required for the Trinidad surgery.
He had apparently acknowledged on the Q95 fundraiser, that the authorities had provided initial help for Shernel’s medical visit to Trinidad.
“I am very disappointed that after speaking to the authorities in Dominica they have abandoned me, refused to take my call and left me and my daughter stranded” the Wesley man was reported as saying at the time.
However Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit told reporters on Monday, that the government had provided funds for an initial operation for Ms Prince.
“When the young lady went the first time, the government contributed TT$185,000 (EC$82,154.61) for the young girl’s medical situation,” he explained.
According to the prime minister, the family’s decision to do a second procedure failed to meet with stipulated regulations governing how funds are disbursed for medical purposes.
“For us to provide you with assistance to go out of Dominica for medical services, you must get a referral from a consultant doctor resident in Dominica. Because I am not a doctor, I cannot take tax payers money and send you because you say you want to go,” the prime minister said.
He said also that a formal request for that second level of help was not made.
The prime minister says the young woman’s family took her to Trinidad the second time without the government’s knowledge, and then tried contacting his administration while in Trinidad “for I believe about TT$200,000”.
He said suggestions that the government was called several times and failed to respond gives the wrong impression about what actually happened.
However sources close to the family say there was no second trip, that the ailing young woman while in Trinidad found out she needed the major operation costing $80,000 and tried to get additional help from the Skerrit administration but was ignored.

Lesson to be learnt. Dominicans do not allow politicians from any side to interfere in your business. Do not be used for political mileage else you will suffer the consequences and the politians will continue business as usual. GON Emmanuel and now Shernelle. This case calls for an implementation of an act called the “Shernelle Act”. It can serve to be used as evidenced in the unlikely event that someone needs assistance and will not have to go through so many channels. It should be clear and precise as to who is qualify and for how much. This will then remove the need of who belong to whose party and what was given before and what is needed again. Lets do this by the books to help save a child in the future.
To the people of Dominica if u dont know about government spending taxpayers money there just go spend money on one person like that as the PM said u have to do what needs to be done to get assistance and for a sickness like cancer i dont think it would be a good idere to spend to much doing operration couse it is not a sickness that can be cured by one opperration people have spend there hole life saveing on treatment and still die so i got to say good move PM for not runing the country bankkrope to try and save one person that the government had already help .

Happy to say the young woman has gone on to meet her maker (she is no longer suffering. All the talk can now be dispelled because it is really sickening to see how everyone here had one thing or the other to say that was either blue or red and they totally ignored the fact that someone was sick and needed help. Thank God he saw the need to bring her home so she wouldn’t have to deal with this nonsense. Just remember in the midst of all the politicking, God doesn’t see Labour or Workers, he sees his children so keep fighting over a man and forget that souls have to account for themselves on judgment day.

Getting the money was one challenge my dear, surviving the surgery was another. Gone but never forgotten.

I understand the father did not follow correct protocol in trying to acquire funding for his daughter on the second occasion, however, aren’t we even considering the kind of stress and pressure that this man and his family might have been enduring? The man took some careless actions but possibly anyone in his desperate situation to save his daughter’s life would have made mistakes like these too. Mr. Skerrit is telling the man that he cannot just give him the money because he say he say he wants to go??? Was it a vacation the man intended to spend the money on?? Did the man plan to go gamble it all in a casino??? Was this man begging for money just to go and shop in Trinidad??? NO! He was pleading with the prime minister for the sake of his dying daughter! If my husband send to to Roseau with $200 to see the doctor and buy medication. The doctor’s visit cost $100. I paid the doctor and proceeded to Jolly’s. The lady at the counter told me the medication cost $250. I only have $100 and I am calling my husband phone so he can give the bus driver some more money for me, he refused to answer the phone. Wasn’t I left stranded in Roseau? That is what the man said he was abandoned, now he in Trinidad not knowing where to turn and Govt has refused to take his call and to help him out. I also think he should have said, they did help us out with an amount but right now I am still in Trinidad and I need the help and they have turned their back on me.

When some people needed plastic surgery on their face after they were drinking smoking and driving at top speed , their help came immediately,when they wanted their Infinity bought cash and still get duty free ,that too was easy. His statements here totally contradicts what his minister and parl rep Gloria Shillingford said in the house when Bazil asked the question recently.
According to Gloria at the time, government was fully aware of the situation and was putting things in place to make the money available. She went on with her long speech about that is why they will always win elections and etc etc.

Do you know how long you have to pay insurance to make up for if you have to file a big claim like that on them? Insurance is to take financial care of catastrophic events in our lives such as these. Get insurance for yourself and your children and get it early to lock in a good rate.
Who is big shot? Money do not grow on trees. don’t the so called big shots worked hard for their wealth.This recession was a wake up call for ALL. Act like people with a little bit of common sense and appreciate the generousity of the reamining few.Most houses and cars have insurance. Why don’t we Dominicans consider LIFE INSUSRANCE?

This father should not have made that statement, i was dissappointed when i heard him saying they left him stranded and that he couldn’t leave his daughter in trinidad to come home and mortgage his home because he had that option.

I do recall hearing the father say that he had received some help from the government. Unfortunately, in the overall hyped up story, that one sentence was muffled and we really did not get a true picture of what happened.
