PM shoots down claims of unfair relief supplies distribution

Relief supplies have been flowing into Dominica since the storm
Relief supplies have been flowing into Dominica since the storm

Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has described as “unsubstantiated” and “unwarranted” reports that there are unfairness and partisanship in the distribution of relief supplies following the passage of Tropical Storm Erika.

He did admit, however, that in the distribution of relief supplies on such a magnitude that “there could be clogs in the system.”

“Our job as a people is to find these chinks and work them out,” he said.

There have been reports on the airwaves and on social media of political unfairness in the distribution relief supplies after the storm.

But in an address to the nation on Monday night the Prime Minister urged Dominicans to stay away from such levels of discussion.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, brothers and sisters…please! please! I beg of you. Do not let us degenerate the discussion to this level,” he stated. “My job as Prime Minister has been to bring emotional comfort to residents, while soliciting, from far and wide, assistance to relieve the suffering of my people.”

He pointed out that he has been supported in the endeavor by his cabinet, fellow Labour Party Parliamentarians, Leader of the Opposition, Lennox Linton and other Opposition Parliamentarians and is unaware of any breakdown.

“We have put in place a clear and transparent system for the receipt, processing and distribution of relief supplies,” Skerrit noted. “No Minister of Government or Parliamentary Representative is or should be involved in the administration of this program. Each Parl Rep, and I mean each of the 21 elected Parl Reps, has been given a direct line of access to the administration of the Relief Supply service.”

He said he will not be distracted “by a few radio talk show hosts, or others incapable of raising their level of debate and discourse.”

“If there are problems, I invite any disgruntled Parl Rep to speak up at our regular meetings and let us iron them out,” the Prime Minister noted.

He said there will be a meeting of all 21 parliamentarians on Tuesday morning and all public officers co-ordinationg the distribution of relief supplies will be invited.

He said they will “hear grievances and also spell out, once again, the procedures that have been put in place for the procurement, management and distribution of relief supplies.”

“But, I am honestly too focused on the bigger picture, to be dragged into such negative, internecine warfare, that will clearly not contribute to the reduction of stress on the backs of those who suffered in this disaster,” the Prime Minister said.

PM Skerritt cannot be serious to blame talk show hosts for the problem that he created,by his methodology of governance of Dominica, backed by his past utterances, which have created the problem of discrimination in the distribution of relief supplies. It is his surrogates who have taken a page from his play book.Right now he is ashamed that visitors in our midst will find out his modus operandi of governance. The example you set by discriminating and rediculing the people of Salisbury who are asking for roads to their farms, and they are being punished because they did not vote for his party sends a signal that it’s OK to discriminate against other party supporters.Yes there are chinks being created by labourites,so don’t blame others for the seeds you have sown over the past 15 years.Dominicans must tell the world what has been happening, through the friends who are here to help during the Erica disaster. Where there are chinks why do you consider the Parl Reps as disgruntled? Shame!

since the disaster i had filled several forms and submitted myself and family members names to several individuals and to several places and had not received any relief supplies. when i asked some other persons from my village they were well stocked up – the labourites of course. so strangely i received a phone call from the govt. distrbution today saying that they had some supplies for me. i went to collect it. later today i’m reading the news and realize that people had complained about the fact that politics was in the distribution of supplies. This was definitely true. cause i realized that my name was on the form with other persons who had signed for supplies and my name was skipped while other people were contacted.

    • September 9, 2015

Even if you are from Petite Savan and your lifestyle was not affected by the hurricane it does not matter how many forms you filled out–if you are not qualified for service, then that is the way it has to be.

Also the service must consider the most urgent need–you may not be as urgent as those who received service. The problem with us is that we cannot think of others before ourselves–and once we are satisfied, who cares about those who are dwelling in filth–that is very bad about our attitude and conduct.

Dorival, you must understand that various groups and institutions are sending assistance to their own organization /associations i know for example groups in Guadeloupe sent a lot of relief for the people in Portsmouth when they heard what happened to Dominica. Do not confuse that with relief going through the National relief supplies, it is easy to confuse things. Families also send stuff directly to their love ones as well.

Similarly a segment of the Labour Party can raise funds and supplies purposely to give relief to affected labourites that they know this relief is in no way connected to the National relief supplies, the UWP can do the same if they so chooses.

The National relief is managed by an independent team headed by Mr. Greg Thomas of Dexia, there is also the Red Cross…..

Skerrit successfully using the storm to play his usual politics while he cornered UWPand shut them down. i
“If there are problems, I invite any disgruntled Parl Rep to speak up at our regular meetings and let us iron them out.” Disgruntled Pal Reps, all from the opposition, can only speak at their regular meetings, but not in public so none could hear, while he and his team continue to look good in public and play their politics in public. For example, when he was talking about the amount of assistance they getting, he seized the opportunity to say ” It means Dominica is doing some things well to impress so many nations.” In essence he tapping his shoulder knowing UWP cannot publicly question the noshow of USA. Joshua Francis was out and who took over the constituency? Skerrit and new dlp candidate. Morning of Erica, Minister Drigo was on air with Green/ Brown talking about how smart the government was to bring in equipment to clear road; yet he was stock with 3 bodies in bus stop

    • I, Me, & I Alone
      September 8, 2015

I meant minister Drigo was on radio bragging on how smart and forward looking his government was during Erica that they were able to bring in heavy equipment in the area to clear the roads in case of blockages, but in the same breath the man was talking about three dead bodies stock in the bus stop and did not know when they would be removed, since there were no medical professionals around to declare them dead, so they could legally be moved to a funeral home. But at that time Q had already taken a decision to stop people from highlighting the failures of the government, and later UWP members came on to say that they want us to be united, which is true and the right thing to do under normal circumstances, but this DLP administration is not normal and when we could highlight their failures at a time that all could see (Pictures are worth a million words), they allowed Skerrit to silence them while he used every opportunity to make political mileage.

I am not surprised that the Labour Party is treating the donation as they treat everything else, that is it all goes to labourites

Why should the unaffected communities receive aid? Aid should only be given to the communities affected.

The people need to get off their backsides and start to fend for themselves.

People, please show some pride in yourselves and stop relying on freebies. Our P M had created a society which is reliant on proceeds of begging.

    September 8, 2015

Not sure if I should even be submitting this post, but I will. I find it very difficult to donate when I know in my heart, much of what I donate may never get to those in need. My heart tells me just donate and if there is unfair distribution, I know I would have done my part. I have however decided to make a small financial contribution to the recovery efforts. I would not sit back and withhold my help, because of this concern. Even if 10% of what I contribute gets to those in need, it’s better than nothing.
I pray we all make a contribution as little as it may be, and pray that those in need get the much needed help.

If there is unfairness in the distribution of relief goods we everyone in Dominica and abroad should know . I am here collecting goods to send to home for ALL . Help should not go to Skeritt supporters only. Heard that here in New York and its upsetting . If true should stop. September 8, 2015

Boy oh boy! The PM is doing his best. Of course everyone wants emergency relied now for now but to accuse a man that’s personally going to every town & district to assess the level of damage & distress for himself of unfairness in distribution is pathetic. He went to Boetica and found that a convoy was their giving aid. Can’t you all see that he’s making sure that no Dominican goes without? Give the man a break and try to help for God’s sake!! God bless our PM!!

    • Smart fool
      September 8, 2015

Cyrique, one man going from town to town does not fix a problem in a broken system. This whole argument could be ended, if the PM just made a clear call for these practices to stop, and to have 1-2 people designated to follow up on any reports of discrimination. Thats it! All this back and forth talking just shows a level of incompetence or disinterest.

I agree with Skerrit that this should not be what we are talking about right now. But, the only way to stop it is to do something about it. This should really be an easy fix! But we won’t do the right thing, he’ll let this sore fester so that we can keep talking about it for months to come, then say “shut up”.

Nothing is done properly in this country, although we all have experiences (PM included) in other nations where systems are put in place to avoid all this silliness from occurring!

“If there are problems, I invite any disgruntled Parl Rep to speak up at our regular meetings and let us iron them out,” the Prime Minister noted.
Why does Mr. Skerrit believe Dominica belongs to him alone while he keeps playing politics with everything? Mr. Skerrit, what takes more time to do: Using your address to shoot down victims and talk show hosts” or to directly tell those clogs in the system, according to you, that they need to stop it immediately? I know you like to quote scripture so please study Acts 6:1-6 and see how good leaders dealt with similar injustice done by some “Dogs” with food distribution. Notice they did not feed those dogs and tried to deny their complaints like you did. You see, if the DOG owner realizes that those dogs are there to work for him he will never shoo them out. I wonder if those dogs cannot be identified?

@The Evangelist? September 8, 2015 “Why does Mr. Skerrit believe Dominica belongs to him alone while he keeps playing politics with everything”?<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Where did you see that indication from your quote above ?

As the Primary Leader of the Group, Mr. Skerrit has the highest authority, and so he says: LET US HEAR YOUR GRIEVANCES AT THE COMING MEETING– what is wrong with that?

You are one of those people who will interrupt a conversation, without hearing and understanding the theme–because you already had your negative objective in the first place. It is those people like you who are creating the strife and discord which affect all of us in a community–when will you all ever stop?

On the other hand I am glad to read that Mr. Linton is in harmony with Mr. Skerrit– the sign is, in times like this–no one is the head, but everyone is at work, together, for the health and welfare of our people–God's Will be done!.

Yes their have been improvements which have directly resulted from Social Media Awareness.
Fairness and impartiality have only come about because Social Media is on the front lines ‘ensuring’ such is the case, and informing the public accordingly!

Might we remind you Sir, when the distribution of relief commenced, it was Porto Labour dressed in Red that were being serviced!

You have been forced by Social Media to keep it fair and equal…..

Again I salute those patriots on the ground that have been reporting via Social Media of the realities as they unfold.
You have done your Country a good deed and your reporting continues to hold this government accountable.

There are many people in these communities (including the same Dublanc and Bioche you mentioned) who don’t know where their next sip of drinking water is going to come from. The containers will soon stop. The distribution will soon come to an end .we all no it is unfair. When I was a child for hurricane David our police station was full and everone received a box or few bags for their families. When your distribution stops. People can start to care for their families.

It’s so niice to be happy lets all be happy with the Jokes/garbage coming fom our tiny island.
Laughter has a place there despite our tradgy.
Where is EDDO in al this? Is he mad at his hand picked buddy who is now being briefed only by his new boss? How come he ain’t on the Reconstruction team of opportunistic canine team as per P.M Skerrit.
Skerro may soon refer to the team of canine as the pack of wolves in sheep clothing. seeing he has already classified the dogs in the system.
A Sr. Counsel not the passport one once called D/cans opposed to the Current regime cockroaches. now the P.M called suspect volunteers dogs in the system then appointed a pack of wolves truly amazing my Dominique
