PM Skerrit chastises media for negative news

Skerrit said there should be a nationalistic spirit in Dominica

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has chastised the media in Dominica saying that it goes to the gutters and garbage bin to find negative stories about the country.

He was addressing members of the media after the contract signing for the architectural design of a National Multi-Sports Complex in Dominica on Friday.

He said the media should work with facts and leave it to the audience to form an opinion.

“I just find that in this country we go in the gutters and we go in the garbage bins looking for negative stories about Dominica and unless we cannot find one, we don’t want to print our newspaper or we don’t want to go with our newscast,” he stated.

The Prime Minister was speaking against the background of a story in The Sun Newspaper which claimed that the government of Dominica owes the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Supreme Court about $8-million.

It appeared Skerrit was not pleased with the article saying it was a ‘totally and a complete lie.’ He stated that the government owed the Supreme Court ‘over seven or so million dollars’ but a significant sum has already been paid and Dominica is now owing $4.4-million which will be placed in this year’s budget and paid off by the end of 2017.

According to the Prime Minister, in some countries there is an understanding among journalists, the government and the state that “salacious and negative stories” never appear on the front or back pages of newspapers.

“I don’t want to call countries here but we all know the countries …” he noted. “We go to these countries and we feel that there is no crime because never will you see the reporting of any crime on the front page or the second page or the back page or the headline news.”

He stated that there should be a greater sense of nationalist spirit and commitment to country in Dominica.

“If there is something that has to be said, it has to be said but we cannot always want to be so salacious, so scandalous and so rumor mongering,” Skerrit noted. “It is becoming the order of the day.”

The Prime Minister said he has no problems with people criticizing the government but it must be done in a certain manner.

“I have no problem with people criticizing the government but criticize the government from a standpoint of facts,” he stated. “I have done my research and these are the points that I came up with.”

He described the matter as very serious since, according to him, negative news has the ability to undermine Dominica.

“Bad news travel around the world five times before positive news can put on its clothes and at the end of the day when we give people out there the impression that our country is not a safe place to come and visit and so forth, who you think is going to be affected?” he said.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister said he expects to see an apology and correction from The Sun Newspaper when it goes to press on Monday.

Dominicans living abroad love to get news from the homeland and appreciate honest reporting.

Sad to say not all news is good. Unfortunately, bad things happen as well as good things. But people want to know.

The problem with negative reporting is that an abundance of it can condition the human mind to think to think because it is happening that is simply the human condition now and that is how it is suppose to be.

First, good things are also happening in Dominica and maybe more should be made of them. Personally,
I have no trouble finding positive news articles in DNO. This in spite lf the fact that some of your people think it is none of my business what is happening on the nature island!

Second, there should be a better understanding of the gospel everywhere. This is THE good news that Christ by His death on the cross paid the penalty for our sins and rose again as proof that the Father had accepted that sacrifice. We as individuals can be saved by believing this.

    • June 12, 2017

      Continuation:

You want good news :?: Please read 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, 2 Corinthians 5:17 and Romans I:16. That is the news!

Third, people and circumstances can be changed. Evangelist Billy Graham said he believed in changing society one person at a time. The dynamic for this change is the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is the work of grace God does in the human heart when an individual BELIEVES and RECIEVES Christ as his (or her) Personal
      Savior.

Good news, good news, good news :!:

*… as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the children of GOD.* (John 1:12)

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Evangelist. (Just a teller of good news.)

The above comment written by myself ends with a verse from the Bible. I failed to finish the verse correctly. Please forgive me for my unintentional error and read the entire verse. This is something I take seriously. It should read:

*But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the children of God, even to them that believe on his name.* (John 1:12)

        Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill

This government is playing with the minds of people especially of poor people. We know the bible and we have been very patient with this inept Skerrit. What we want is good governance and decent government that our poor people are elevated from begging to good jobs……Hep get rid of Skerrit, his government is corrupt

“……media in Dominica saying that it goes to the gutters and garbage bin to find negative stories about the country”. Skerrit opens his mouth daily and spews garbage and rubbish. It is not his fault, that is the nature of the best of the political philosophy of this man, referred to as illiterate politics and one of fear.
Where else can the media find news but where it is and that is in the Labour cesspit media and the only political party residing there is the Corrupt, abusive Dominia Labour Party, headed by the incompetent questionable leader of this corrupt Labour party.
This Skerrit can say what he wants and comes up with nonsense because that is where his politics is and that of this corrupt about Government. Skerrit Must Go, Sir, we will not be distracted. The more you open your mouth is the more we will chastise you because of corrupt government and you not fit to be Prime Mininister. Go to hell Sir, Go, you are a big failure. Skerrit Must Go! Now

Downplaying local crime may be good for tourism, but honest journalists will put “above the fold” the news that is honestly most important. Mr. Skerrit should do his job and not complain that other people doing other jobs are not helping him. For example, if Labour would violate the law, the media should expose that, not paper it over to boost tourism (and political careers). Given the American media (which has retreated from treason and collusion to Mr. Trump simply twisting arms and being boorish–but wait, we knew that), Mr. Skerrit has it mild.

Now, we know the countries you’re referring to are, Russia, Cuba, and China because they all suppresses freedom of the press.

    DNO: I hope you publish.

I read the story in the Sun and I’m still trying to figure out what about it that so upsets the prime minister.
The story states, “Of the nine member countries that make up the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) supreme court, none owes the court as much in dues as the nearly $8 million that Dominica does.
Figures obtained by The Sun reveal that the Roosevelt Skerrit administration was indebted to the court to the tune of $7,522,576 as at January this year, $131,588 more than the $ 7,391,018 it owed in December 2016.”
The prime minister himself admitted that his government owed the court “over seven or so million dollars”, just what the Sun reported. So why must it apologise? He said he had paid some of the debt. When did he pay it? After January? After the story was published?
Interestingly, the story also quoted Dominican lawyer Justin Simon as raising concern about the $27 million owed to the court, the same amount quoted by the…

    • Anon
      June 10, 2017

he story also quoted Dominican lawyer Justin Simon as raising concern about the $27 million owed to the court, the same amount quoted by the Sun. Does this put Justin Simon in the gutter and garbage bin? It also quoted the chief justice complaining that “the court’s headquarter has not received all the approved budget contributions from all the member states” in over a decade. Is the chief justice in the gutter and garbage bin?
Or could it be that the prime minister’s attack on the paper was a feeble attempt at misdirection, trying to take attention away from the fact that his government owe the court millions of dollars?
As for the prime minister’s contention that there are countries where the media collude with the government, I can think of Russia, China and North Korea. Is this what he intends us to be?

What is the answer to most of our problems is it Dr Roosevelt skerritt or is it the British that gave us independence without no training to think and create jobs for our selves . Some people wants change its healthy and good in any democratic system . But we should and must demand that our government provides the avenue to grow the economy . The growth must come from the private sector . We need a different kind of approach of educating our youth. The broblems is not so complated, how many jobs does the private sector provides , and how much taxes does the citizens pay to the state . And when the new pm gets in what is he going to do different . Do any body on the opposition side own a water factory now. You must show me what you can manage , and how many people you employ now. Tell Mr Linton go and bid for the contract to build the marigot hospital and employ some of his people . Government is not the answer to all our problems . We must learn to help ourselves .

Points well made Mr Prime Minister, the US media has been historically used as a weapon to control the minds of the people globally, sensationalism is the way to go in keeping the mind captive and one tracked, With the exception of the local news , Dominica is bombed continuously by the caucasoid people and their media. Cable TV was placed in Dominica for a reason, after the peoples’ upheavals of the 70′, 80′ ect together with Religious radio, eg the Racist later day saints church, Dominica is well situated in their box. At times the comments published on this media for example, are PLAGIARIZED, its like their knowledge of the facts, come from the US NEWS networks. Some Dominicans in the Diaspora should know better, but living a shocked life in the US, Canada and England has left themselves and Dominicans on the Island wanting. Black media internationally, can stand up to the trash being purveyed on a people ,whose minds have not been evolved. Modern day imperialism is at its worst…

Some people who reside out of D/ca informed me that they never read the comments. Some have ceased accessing this Website due to your type of comments. Know that this is not good for DNO.
I, personally have noted, through the years the comments and responses to them have dwindled. I scan through some of them and by-pass them. I realize it is not worth responding to some of them for they are the same comments over and over again and they become boring to read and not worth responding to. Lets’s add some more names: Rudolph King, Leroy Paris, Karan Singh and this list is by no means complete!
In addition in trying to muzzle the media and public commentators in Dominica at the tax payers’ expense, I make no apologies for saying that Mr. Skerrit appears to be a coward. In Dec. 2011 he filed a suit against Dr. Thomson Fontaine for defamation and a subsequent appeal by him for some evidence to be barred was overturned in Nov.2014 with the ruling that the case proceed to High Court for trial. To this day, almost six years later the matter is still lingering and remains unheard. One can not escape the impression that Mr. Skerrit is loath to be questioned under oath in court regarding a case he initiated.
Our people have every right to question and comment on these- and other perceived wrongdoings, especially in the light of a serious lack of disclosure by a government that rules the country on behalf of all of us. We badly need a freedom of information act.

    • Truth Knowledge

One suspects you are deliberately choosing to misconstrue what the article reports the Prime Minister as having said. From what I read, he stated, “If there is something to be said, it has to be said but we cannot always want to be so salacious, so scandalous, so rumor mongering…it is becoming the order of the day…I have no problem with people criticizing the government but criticize the government from a standpoint of facts.”

From this it is clear that the Prime. Minister is not saying that people whether in Dominica or overseas should be “shut up” but merely that we should all be conscious of the potential adverse impact on our country of what we say and do and where the potential damage of our words outweighs the benefit to perhaps choose another medium to convey our concerns.

The Prime Minister should criticize himself because of the manner he treats the media. Many times he is out of state, the local press has to pick up his where about from the foreign press. He goes out, he comes back in without the knowledge of the people, who pays his salary. When was the last time he held a press conference where the local media could ask him questions. When was the last time he had a one on one with the management of the most popular online media, DNO. When was the last time he entered the studios of Q95. Just recently he left for Russia, did he called the press and gave a detailed report before and after he returned from Russia. Dominicans have heard so much about the alleged tainted CBI money being refused by certain banks in Dominica, has he ever called the press and discussed the matter. If took Mr. Linton to ask a question in parliament for Dominicans to know the seriousness of the situation. In the absence of genuine information, propaganda is king.

Look to yourself. Know that people and those abroad read those types of debasing comments which are out of context. You are worth criticizing for the manner in which you treat the PM and what you state about him.
When have you stated that the PM is doing a good job in Dominica? Oh no! You people consistently write debasing and negative comments about him and his ministers.
You uphold what is evil; not what is good. You uphold all what Lennox Linton did and to divide Dominicans and create lack of peace in Dominica. You are the evil ones.
I am informing you, if I owned a Media Website, many of your comments would not be posted. They serve no useful purpose to nationals and to Dominica. The sensible ones who reside abroad are fed-up with your type of comments.
I am also informing you, God will hold all of you UWP supporters accountable for what you state on this Website. I can imagine what you state when you do not comment on this Website. God is taking note.

Sounds like Skerritt is copying from the Trump play book about fake news, however Skerritt has to look into the mirror before talking such garbage.I guess the information about Morfared, Madweke,NG Lap Seng etc are not fake new. What Skerritt needs to realize is that the easiest way to get rid of the back and forth about fake news and the truth is to practice open and transparent government.Skerritt ,simply by following the precedent of the Prime Ministers before you there Will be full and open accountability and the citizens will have knowledge of your actions on the behalf of the country,so it’s all in your hands,my boy.Either you do the right thing or accept the murky news when you don’t provide the facts

Reports on the arrests of governmental office or directors of Government owned companies. The director of the port was arrested for fraud, money laundering bribery – that was headline news in St. Maarten. Skerrit only wants to move Dominica into dictatorship state and so he attacks the media and sue and intimidates those who speaks the truth. What they are oblivious of is that God created everyone and they are responsible for themselves. In this era as I have been reading especially on this Website, they consistently blame the government.
The government has given every one an opportunity to attend elementary and high school. In bygone years some did not have the opportunity to attend high school. In fact, their parents would have to pay for them. If they could not afford it, they did not attend high school.
How many took an interest in school and graduated? When they are unemployed and cannot find a job and a suitable one at that, they blame the government.
This is another reason I stand up for the government that the PM deserves credit and respect for what he is presently doing for Dominica and nationals. Why it is some people in Dominica and abroad notice it and some of those in Dominica do not notice it? They must be blind, deaf and sleeping.

      “Foreign”
I reside in Canada. This news is broadcasted and published for the purpose of informing residents and that they should be careful, especially when the criminals are not yet caught that, residents should be on the alert in case they see the wanted criminals, to report it to the police or crime stoppers.
Of course, we are shocked about what is occurring in our environment. However, no one places the blame on the government. No Media publishes it in a manner to debase the government. It is foolish to do so.
Those I blame are the ones who allow these criminals to be released, be granted bail in addition to not being given sufficient sentencing and to let the punishment suit the crime. If nationals are dissatisfied, they respectfully write their MP about it. If many do, in time, the government will review it and make changes. This is the manner in which this situation should be handled.

Publishers are subject to the laws of the land, not to censorship by politicians. There are echoes of Trump in this attack. If the Sun has published a story that is untrue then it is right that it should be held to account for it, but the PM should not make the mistake in thinking that a questionable article in one publication gives him the right to besmirch or interfere with the broader freedom of the press. It is not the responsibility of the press to preserve or paint a false image of the country. It is their responsibility to publish the truth.

Who makes the Laws of the land?
There is a saying: “As many heads there are, it is as many opinions we will get.”
People see things differently and they comment differently. However, there are some Media which do not relay the news as it should be. Some of them have been sued. This is why the Media must be careful what is broadcasted and published.
The same applies about what we state about others. We are liable to be sued if what we state is damaging to the other. Therefore, consider what the PM stated. This should be advice to the Media. It is constructive criticism.

I read through the Toronto Media that in May unemployment increased. This is also the time many students will graduate. I expect it will escalate as the years progress. I know one of the reasons that many jobs were lost, through technology. This is a problem all countries face.
Every year thousands of students graduate. There are more students graduating than there are jobs. These days a high school certificate is insufficient. Some will go to college and university.
Every country has its unemployment problems. Dominica is no exception. What people as you must do is to cease blaming the government for everything.
There are people who are considering what could they do to be employed. Some open their own business.

The news media reflect the character of the country. I would readily agree that stories should be factual before being released. Mr. Skerrit has NO moral authority to scold the Press. He just recently told a very dangerous lie about an attempted coup by the Opposition parties which he well knew to be manifestly false. The security forces dressed in military fatigue and armed to the teeth invaded the homes and privacy of many innocent people at early dawn. This was done because of one man’s lie. Those who wanted independence did not give it a thought, how they would run the country.
Do you know what I thought to this day? If D/ca obtained independence, when the country seceded, they would get some money from Great Britain; no doubt an exorbitant sum.
The UWP supporters speak of transparency. Did the government then inform nationals how much money they got from Great Britain when D/ca became independent? It would be interesting to know and what happened to that money.
I do believe it was foolhardy to gain independence. To this day Dominica is not independent. This is not the PM’s fault. He has the burden of finding funds for operating Dominica.
Sorry to say, if Dominica was under Great Britain, it would not have been necessary for these other countries to come in and assist Dominica in the manner which is done.
