An engineer to conduct estimates for roads in Marigot, engagement of National Employment Program (NEP) in the community and construction of new homes in the constituency are among key points agreed when Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit met with executive members of the Marigot Village Council on Friday.
Skerrit described the meeting as “fruitful.”
“We shared a very fruitful discussion and I expressed to them that for any issue they have, feel free to engage me or any of the Ministers that can take care of these concerns,” he said.
Below are the key points from the meeting, according to a release from the Prime Minister.
• An engineer from the Ministry of Public Works will visit next week to conduct estimates for the roads and storm drains.
• A contract was already prepared for the building of a bridge and Public Works will review the terms of the contract and set a start date.
• 30 persons from the NEP who recently registered, are going to be engaged. Provisions are being made for an additional 20 persons to be engaged through consultation with the council.
• $1.5 million has already been approved for housing and we are waiting for the Council to submit the names of the persons requiring urgent assistance.
• 13 new homes are expected to be constructed within the Marigot constituency. In consultation with the Ministry of Housing, the Council will assess the Layou Park and Melville Hall areas for appropriate sites for the construction of these units.
• Solid Waste will coordinate the collection of white goods (refrigerators, washing machines, televisions, etc.).
• Funds will be made available to the Council to assist with outstanding payments to truckers once the relevant invoices are received.
• Marigot has been identified as one of the areas where a hurricane shelter capable of withstanding Category 5-strength storms will be constructed.
Where is your representative for Marigot? I have not heard anything from him since the hurricane, has he gone into hiding. He should be battling with Government to ensure Marigot gets what it deserves., like all other constituencies.
There is an old saying ” Do good ma ras, do bad ma ras, just do bad and done. Let us see whether the PM pledges will come to fruition then we can tear him to pieces. lets face it, people are no fools, they can see the good and the bad. Mr. PM I am happy you went to Marigot, it was about time. I am disappointed the the elected representative was not invited but we are looking forward to all your promises. Marigot is part of Dominica and you are our Prime Minister, so don’t think you are doing us a favour you are just doing your job. One important thing missing is the mention of the hospital, when will we hear more about that? Anyway Marigot is not for sale.
Sad when these guys go around showing -off. This should be the Minister of health going out there to see how things are going on the Hospital. But I guess the ministers are just effigies holding up balloons while Skerrit goes about running their ministries. The Prime Minister did not destroy Marigot. The people of Marigot are the ones destroying that once majestic village. Gone are the days when the people of Marigot were hard working and independent. An honest, fair minded and patriotic citizen cannot be satisfied with Mr. Skerrit’s style of leadership. I’m an advocate for cohesion and not division in the country, for unity is strength. A good leader always try to bring people together not use divisive methods and policies to bamboozle the electorate in order to maintain a stranglehold on power. Just look at the present dilapidated state of the country and you will realize what these anachronistic maneuverings have done to the country. With Skerrit’s exclusionary policies about half the country’s human resources (brains) are being wasted. Just briefly imagine all the people working with one goal in mind, to do the best for the country even though there are political differences. I am not your enemy even if I don’t see eye to eye with you at times. Greed, selfishness and the quest to hold on to power at all cost are all factors mitigating against the development of Dominica. The PM is not doing the people of Margot any special favor. A government presides over the entire country, it is not there only for its party supporters. Every working person in Dominica pays taxes regardless to which political party one supports. So everyone , every constituency, every community should benefit from the country’s resources. The resources of the country are not Mr. Skerrit’s personal properties to do as he likes. This exclusionary political practice is responsible for the present underdeveloped state of the country. Two heads are always better than one. If the practice of narrow partisan politics is not discontinued, political animus, division, under utilization of human capital, tension, abject poverty will forever plague Dominica and stagnate its potential development.
The meeting was with the Village Council, they are the ones responsible for inviting their Parliament representative, the Prime Minister–Come people! Try to think for yourself, for crying out loud!
