PM wants Dominicans on guard during hurricane season

Skerrit said some hurricane damages can be avoided

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has made a plea to all citizens to be on guard during the 2014 hurricane season.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday morning the Prime Minister called on all Dominicans to do what is needed to protect themselves and their property.

“Dominica has a very narrow fiscal space and any disaster that affects us sets us back several years and one can appreciate those challenges,” he noted. “People’s homes are affected, infrastructure is affected we now have to move to construct sea defenses, river defenses, soil stabilization in many parts of the country.”

According to him 48-50 percent of damages which occur during a hurricane can be avoided if residents do what is expected of them.

“We have no control of whether a hurricane will hit us or not but there are some things which we have control over and we must take preemptive and proactive action because when we do the analysis of the impact of storms in Dominica, hurricanes in Dominica at least 48-50 percent of the damage caused could have been avoided had we taken out action as residents,” he stated.

The Prime Minister noted that in his constituency work has begun in clearing all of the culverts, drains, cutting the overhanging tree in an attempt to ensure that people’s homes are not damaged in the event of a storm.

Thanks for reminding us it is hurricane season Roosevelt. Without you I would have completely forgotten, like a little child. Bay the way brother, when are you going to comple that road from Pont Casse to Hatton garden? Did your minister say, it would be completed by chrismas 2012, come what may…? You see, if we do get really bad weather I’m afraid that road will not be passable at Bells and we all have to go through that torture again via Castle Bruce and Carib territory (…if that temporary bypass at William holds!), unless you want to go all the way via Portsmouth, for which you have to bring your lunch if you come from Roseau.

talking about hurricane season, I believe the PM needs to take a drive up from loubiere to petite savanne and see the condition of the road especially the newly paved road from loubiere to geneva. overhanging trees making canopy in bellevue chopin, all the drains are blocked with trees cut down by ppl when it rains the water runs on the road at pichelin and bellevue which is already undermining the road. Let the pichelin team clean the drains and road again like they did a few years ago.

    Dear PM,
What is really needed in DA are the following:
    1. a six month programme whose content would envisage the training of every citizen above the age of six to administer first aid/cpr.
    2. The construction of BUNKERS on a zonal basis so that in the eventuality of hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, geothermal explosions (sic) etc. citizens have a place to go.

    HOTEP!

The PM must be on guard for the WINDS OF CHANGE ARE BLOWING HARD. Dominica has a very narrow-minded government and Disaster Skerrit has set us back several years and one can appreciate those challenges as we all have noted.
As a previous contributor has observed, “there is a hurricane or hurricane season that is as destructive and dangerous as “Hurricane Skerrit and the governance of the DLP. Change is a must.

Who listens to Skerrit? Now he wants to sound good as if he is the caring Jesus.? Tell the ‘……’ to tell us what he was doing in the US yesterday and who accompanied him. We are more concerned about his secret trips and what he may have signed on our backs than what the hurricane may or may not do to us.

He is the PM. There are times he has to conduct business in private for the good of Dominica so as not to divulge this business prematurely. Did you not read that he signed a contract with the World Bank? Do you not know where it is situated and the authorities? Make it your business to find out.
Does he have to report to you and answer you? Do not worry. The country and you will not fall apart. Your hatred and negativism are destroying you.

When a hurricane is approaching, people are warned to protect their property and in some cases to vacate the area. There are some people who do not pay heed and think nothing will happen to their homes. They are to secure windows, doors and also roofs. Some roofs are badly in need of repair. This is what the PM may have meant when he made that statement. Do not blame him for that.

  18. June 10, 2014

 When ever Skirret get a money he is so excited…. half of this money will go towards buying votes in the country… I am looking forward to getting mines…B ecause am sure not voting just like that this time around.. i need food on my table money in my pocket to pay my bills//////

Are you still not aware that squatters do not care two hoots about anyone; not of D/ca and what happens to it? They only care for themselves. Ask them how they became squatters and what caused them to become squatters.

Skeritt always amazes me, with his public statements. This man doesn’t appear to think before he speaks. He has asked Dominicans to guard against hurricanes. The people of the valley are very scared and concerned as regards a possible disaster which could be brought about by the grilling at the Geothermal Plant . One would have thought, he would address the people of the valley and Dominicans by extension in order to lay away their fears . In stead, it appears that his concern is about the hurricane season, maybe he wants to impress the world bank.

  23. My own Poll
    June 10, 2014

I don’t think there is a hurricane or hurricane season that is as destructive and dangerous as “Hurricane Skerrit”. When a natural hurricane is about to hit, at list we get to know ahead of time so we could prepare for it; however, we only hear of the destruction of hurricane Skerrit after the damage has been done on his secret trips, where he signs big loans on our behalf without telling us what he intends to do and how money will be spent. In fact when we ask him he tells us to “go to hell, go to hell, go to hell; its not your dam business.” So yes, I am more afraid of the destruction of hurricane Skerrit than that of any natural hurricane.

    • Hehehe
      June 10, 2014

Could not help laughing at your comment. It was not nice of course but very amusing. You guys need to allow Skerrit to speak on current issues without diluting his valid messages with aspersions, so that those who need to, will take his advice seriously.

        June 15, 2014

Son’ blame people. The hair on his head is already diluted. Whose fault?

  24. June 10, 2014

now de man talking about the hurricane season so if he did not get the funds from the world bank he would never talk about hurricane .. he just come from the U.S.A the money he had to sign that make him come back so fast he doesnt trust none of his ministers to sign for money so u mean to tell me DR D could not sign for it then……what a man

    • looking
      June 11, 2014

By the way of monies are not actually funds, i get the impression that funds are grants but of the 103 million EC Dollars. 12 Million US is actually grant. Therefore the funds were 12 million US. We still have to pay about 70 Million in loans. All countries do take loans, but with our small population who is going to pay back? I guess its best we file for bankruptcy.
