Pointe Michel Village Council gets new Chairperson

Erica Lewis-Jules is the new Chairperson

The Pointe Michel Village Council has a new chairperson in the person of Erica Lewis-Jules.

The council held its elections just over two weeks ago.

At a meeting held at the council’s office in Pointe Michel on September 13, 2017, a show of hands vote was conducted by the District Development Officer (DDO) to elect a new chairperson.

Lewis-Jules won 4-3 over newcomer, Sonia Felix.

She won the votes of the three government nominees Ray Charles, Caris Alexander and Charleston Charles. Her own vote made it a total of four.

Felix was able to capture the votes of elected members John Blanchard, and Melvina McBonette-Boyer along with her own vote.

Elected member Hasselt Williams was absent due to illness. He is currently a patient at the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH). He was the incumbent chairperson.

This is the second time that Williams, after contesting the elections, has fallen sick and had to be taken to hospital before a vote to elect a Chairperson.

John Blanchard was confronted by a friend of mine who ask him why would he vote for Sonia over Erica , his response was that anytime there are allegations about someone who is in public office that person should step aside or stay away from the helm of any public organization in the public’s interest . He said he has nothing personal against Erica on the contrary their friendship goes way back . However on a principal stand she should not be chairperson . He made mention of the Prime Minister of Dominica who asked Ian Pinard to resign as a Minister of Government and Parliamentary Representative for the Soufriere Constituency when allegations were made about him of inappropriate behavior to a minor . Joshua Francis was also forced to resign as deputy political leader of the UWP for that same allegation . He said all over the world , Presidents and Prime Ministers resigns whenever allegations surfaces . Personally i support his views if it is genuine and not political .

So if it wasn’t for the three government nominees she wouldn’t have won.

Connect the dots, Jackarie. The corruption is so breathtakingly dazzling that only the willfully blind (and those who profit off it) will not see it.

That doesn’t bode well for unity and harmony. The lady will experience tacit resistance.

Why wasn’t the vote done by secret ballot? Is it legal? Just asking. In any event, congratulations to miss Erica Lewis-Jules!!
