Police on massive sickout

Police officers across Dominica are staging a sickout today, Tuesday, May 23, a source in the Police Welfare Association (PWA) has confirmed to Dominica News Online.

Reports indicate that the police force is presently operating on skeleton staff manned by the Special Security Unit.

The police and the government are at odds over salary negotiations for the 2015-2018 triennium with the PWA rejecting a wage freeze for the period and asking for 15 percent salary increase (5, 5, 5).

They have also complained of poor working conditions

Sources told DNO that the following departments were called to take part in sickout:
-Roseau station
-Court section
-Traffic
-Telecoms
-Store room
-Drug Squad
-Administration
-Task Force
-CID
-Immigration
-All out stations

The Union and others have prompted them and stirred them on to this. There are some jobs which are of vital importance as police work, nurses, those who care for the sick and teachers. These should not be allowed to strike; no work to rule and no sick out. One day, there will be an end to that.
During a strike or sick out, they will not get full salary. I hope the Union will pay the police officer’s their full salary.

Edison James did it, he cut their salary and never repaid it. History lessons

Everybody should be on sick out. Good job officers. What about fire officers, prison officers, teachers n alllllllll other government employees? If the government can be living it up, and allowing their friends to get rich, not one cent increase is given to those who do the work.
    This government is the worst.

Can someone who is legally trained advise us? Can essential service providers (police, firemen, nursesetc ) in Dominica legally engage in strike action?

Some of those lay brats do not deserve no increase.

While some working others doing their own business on government time. Just like the police officer that had government vehicle in canefield on working hours, stayed by a particular house for an hour and a half. and had government vehicle running. wicked
Some seeking crap going on and not doing nothing. So many incidents happening in traffic and tickets can be issued where by government can make money. They putting a blind eye but they want increase.
God is not a police. Our PM not no fool so carry on with the sick out and see who all you harming.

What is the point of policemen issuing tickets? As soon as they give somebody a ticket the person going to their PM and the PM calling Carbon….

Find out the number of cancelled tickets in any Traffic officer ticket book and then wheel and come again.

That’s why some police officers don’t even bother to walk with ticket book because it’s just useless.

Teachers work their a off. Yet still is not nothing DAT doing for them. Someone new needs to represent the teachers and demand better salaries. Teachers study so hard to improve themselves and get degrees. Teachers take work home on weekends. Teachers put up with crap from parents and students. Teachers use their lil salaries to buy basic necessities for their classes. Teachers are mothers, doctors, nurses, counsellors, and so much more. Every other occupation comes about from teaching. Yet still is pennies they are working for. Who is going to speak for the teachers???

Can’t argue with what you are saying…

But you forgot to include the other things teachers are:
      destroyers, pervs, cowards etc.

Teachers can build you but they can also break you…

Let’s get back to the police and why should we bother with a salary increase for them… what exactly do they do to deserve it?

      SOMEONE PLEASE ANSWER THIS SENSIBLY.

If you don’t take care of the police then the police won’t take care of you. There is a high level of conceit going on in the governance of Dominica.
    Pride goes before a fall.

You will obviously not like my response. However, telling it like it is.
Know that some people join an organization so as to get a salary. Some do not perform efficiently. They are not dedicated. This is the norm for some today.

Now DPSU and DATA should follow suit. Where is Thomas Letang the Teddy Bear.

    • Dominican West Indian
      May 23, 2017

Don’t call Mr. Letang no teddy bear.
He’s the one who’s always been there on the front lines fighting for the rights and the entitlements of the public servants.
And I’m sure that his exemplary leadership has inspired Mr. Drigo of t be PWA to press on for the rights of the members of his association.
And, sad but true, the members of the PSU would never ever even think about doing what the members of the PWA did by having their “sick out”.
Can you imagine what would happen if the majority of the police, the teachers and the public servants all called in sick for two consecutive days?! Can you imagine the chaos in Roseau and all across the country?!

I understood that because PM is rallying with some particular people from a certain area in a particular constituency.
