The police are warning motorists to proceed with extreme caution in the Pond Casse area as a huge section of the road there has been washed away.
This is due to heavy rain which has been pounding Dominica over the past few days.
“A portion of the road is opened about 40 feet deep,” Police PRO, Inspector John Carbon, said. “Persons, especially motorists, are asked to stay away from that area because it is impassable at this time.”
The ravine-like opening is located close to Shayanne Shop, according to reports.
A vehicle with some members of the national football team has fallen into the ditch. According to reports, one of them, though injured, was able to climb out and was to taken to the Princess Margaret Hospital.
However, two others including national football team captain, Kurt Hector, were still in the vehicle and police, fire and rescue personnel on the scene were attempting to pull the vehicle out of the gushing water in that treacherous opening.
My heart goes out to the familys and friends of the decease. but i have one statement the airport is to far from roseau and portsmouththe airport should be close to portsmouth.
condolences to the family of the football coach and player on their untimely passing R.I.P
Condolences to the family of the deceased footballers and prayes are with the lone survivor who did a heroic deed by preventing further deaths. God bless your heart.
I am praying for you
God bless
alas alas dominicans look at what is happening in your country . lord help us because this is living me sad and speech less
I am really saddened by the loss of more of our young men. I pray that the family and friends of these productive young men will be encouraged in the Lord. I pray that the Lord will grant healing to the young man who is hospitalized. I pray that the other members of the team will be strengthened and enabled to cope with their loss. May the Lord help, bless and encourage you all. We should not blame anyone for what happened. It is no one’s fault. Nobody expects there to be a such a split in a road. Nobody can see such a huge hole at that time and in such an environment.
JESUS is the answer for the world today!!!
As a Dominican living abroad for over 40 years I have lived with these type of disasters,it’s not because Dominica is cursed why this happened, some ignorant people with nothing to say but just want to flap their lips will always have stupid, ignorant, comments like that to make, not realising how pathetic they sounds. just recently after heavy rain, flooding, and landslides the rescue service dug out a couple in their car covered under a landslide. when the Tsunami happened was it because the Island was cursed? those ignorant people who think it’s ok to make stupid ignorant remarks at a time like this need to remember people lost family members. and hope you won’t ever have to run back to the place you called cursed, Idiot.
thank god the familly still get closure, because the water could have easily wash the bodies away.r.i.p young souls
hmmmm
Heartfelt sympathy to the families of the two men who died in this tragic accident ..it could have happened to anyone …on an other note …this is NOT a ditch !!!! Maybe a sinkhole ..crater ..or even a crevice …sometimes I wonder about the English proficiency of the editor on this site …you can’t fall 40 ft into a ditch ,I mean come on !
So sad to read this. It is a terrible accident which resulted with loss of lives of two promising young men. I have offered my condolence on the updated article.
I hope those who are injured will eventually recover from their injuries.
Heavy rain would cause such landslides. I am wondering if proper drainage and a retaining wall could be constructed to prevent further soil erosions in areas as this in order to avoid accidents. Of course this could be an expensive venture but it is worth a thought and looking into.
Thinking of the family and friends, our hearts go out to the beautiful Dominicans who are mourning losses, so sorry to hear of this tragidy!! Dominican/Canadian xoxo
Condolences to the families. Be strong!
Heartfelt condolences to the families and friends. Such a tragedy! God is with them.May their soul rest in peace. Thanks be to God for the guy whose life who was saved.Glory!

From a Trini/Looshan. Simpathies to the families involves. RIP. Jah Bless
This is so sad, and it goes to show that we need to respect mother nature at all times, it may look good one second and the next something like this can happen, and it can happen anywhere and at anytime. With that said, I am so disgusted after ready a comment on DNO facebook page were a young man who is obviously an ignorant one at that claimed that this happened because Dominica is cursed. SAAAAAd. This sort of thing is happening every where because of the change in climate. Most recently in Chicago. But to you I say Dominica has its share of problems, and although I don’t reside there, its home and will always be. And, compare to many other countries, Dominica is a sanctuary. When push comes to shove, its idiots like you that run back to DA.
From another Dominican abroad, I totally agree with everything you’ve said living in England for 20 years I have seen my share of disasters
Lord Have mercy! I am here reading these comments, and I am in shock. why would anyone think that these guys were driving fast? this place is a very dark road, and according to reports, if he was going down town to meet the team, then head to the airpot for an early morning flt, it would have been impossible for him to see more than 5-10ft ahead. it is very misty in the early morning up there. People stop making all these stupid remarks, and lets all pray for the families. This could have happened to anyone of us. our entrance into this would is one thing, our exit is quite another story. jeeezzeee.. May the Lord be our strength at this time.
sigghhh st.lucia praying for u dominica….thats really sad WOW may god put a hand and guide you all nuff love! sighh my heart goe s out to the family and friends and the people of dominica! god bless you all
Remember a few years ago what St. Lucia experienced with falling rain and a hurricane? All islands get their share.
Alas Dominica !!! Jah !!!Family and friends and Dominica
God, please protect this island from this bad wheather, so sad for the loss of lives. I am not living in Dominica, may the lord give this family courage.
i cant even stay 2 see that my heart hurts me .
People People come on…….. Fast or not. You could be travelling 2mi/hr and that 40ft ditch is there during such hours, anyone coulde have encountered such detriment. Your well wishes are all these people need right now.God Bless their soul.
We send our prayers to the families, friends and to all Dominicans. Weknow how this trajedy will be felt in the hearts of everyone who knows Dominica.
My condolences goes out to all the families in times like these. Also those who are affected by the floods and landslides, be strong The Lord will deliver you all in times of trouble.
Alas……..the families of the deceased are in my prayers and the survivor and the team i wish God’s blessings and comfort.
God know best..,but how did the 1 guy escape, how did the road open like tat?
Even e fowl would know the answer…..
Sad!!! occurrence. these last few days have been tragic indeed.
Thanks for being on the ball DNO, BTW Kurt Hector was the National Coach and not the Captain.
Am so very sorry for the men thet still below down dre but thanks God for the one he gave a chance to be alive and pray they find the other two…..
Motorists should not be warned. Road should be closed an no one allowed to pass. Sad
Everyone should be warned because ignorance take chances. I hope no one is that naïve to believe they can attempt to take a chance after seeing and hearing about that massive sink hole.
DNO, English teachers please advise Insp.PRO Carbon, that this should read as follow:
“The general public in particular motorists and other road users are asked to stay away. Etc etc etc….”
“Persons, especially motorists, are asked to stay away from that area because it is impassable at this time.”
I sincerely hope this is helpful….It is awful to hear repeated versions of Persons….persons on Q – 95…..Kairi and DBS and callers alike…
Please be advised
OMG You are so right this persons, persons, persons is an earache! Where did it come from in Dominican English? I cannot stand to hear them on the radio just persons this persons that thinking it is cute when it really sounds dumb! Maybe they just like to say it; my gosh, sometimes I turn off the radio cause I just cannot take the “persons” who repeat “persons persons” after every other word.
Today is not the day to make GRAMMAR corrections. Regardless of how many times they say persons, which I think it should be spoken as “people” we should be mindful of what is going on, be careful and stay safe.
“Persons” came from the big countries who were the first to coined it. It is incorrect. They also speak a lot of slang words. They soon find their way to the islands, also heard on TV and read on the Internet. Others hear it and repeat it.
It is also awful that this is your priority right now.
Deepest and profound sympathies goes out to the families and friends who have perished in this seemingly untimely fashion. May God be with you and rest in sincerest peace.
I do not understand however why persons feel the need to blame every natural disaster on the Government. Sometimes we need to grow up and realize by doing so we place emphasis on an issue which really should not be an issue at the moment.
The least we can do is offer compassion and sympathies to those affected.
Stop waiting on an event, however stunned or astonished you may be to cast blames on anyone.
There we go again – PERSONS!
alas if i could do somtin i would i even cry
That why this place is called Pond Case May there Soul Rest In Peace it is a great Lost to Dominica
families and friedns stay strong, i know howl
CRY
Deepest Sympathy goes out to the DFA, Mr. Hector’s family as well as the young guy’s who was accompanying him. Strength and courage to all those who were affected one way or the other by this tragic incident.
am incident have just occur but we have to turn it into a political dispute. why cant we sympathize with the family and friends.
but i have to say that bus driver could not call for help as soon as he had spoken to the young boy. he had to wait until 2 more bus driver came on the scene and then decide which one to take him to the hospital. boy people will die in Dominica before someone help you
we never no when is our tern lets give jesus our life so when we are gon we are safe jesus..may the familys hold strong i remember you in my prays.
I don’t know hector, but heard a lot of him on sports news. I am deeply sadden by the death of theses precious souls. oh my god you are a god of mercy, comfort and love. while we asking why, why, why it happen my maker knows best. lord please give the families comfort and strength through this difficult time.
I am still trying to figure out where exactly along the route this happened. I hope better pictures are provided in time.
I always felt that for a newly constructed road, it was just not up to par. Just around the roundabout, I always had to dig my foot in my brakes when I got to around there, there was a very uneven piece of road right before the roundabout that if you are going too fast, you may bump off the road and only God knows where you might end up. The road appeared smooth all along but unexpectedly you just run into this mess and not a sign in place to alert you.
The roads are so hazardous, it’s just the hand of God we need on this road every second.
Why would you want to go around a round a bout fast? Sympathies to the families of those who died. It is sad to lose someone suddenly in service of the state and country.
But garcon you’re confirming you’re going too, fast. Just slow down, that’s all. I never understand why we Dominicans are always in such a hurry and still don’t arrive on time. Maybe we should leave home on time for a change.
this is not a newly constructed road; get your bearings right before you talk and if the pictures are not giving you enough information then reserve those comments; in the meantime be careful when you drive; Dominica has mountainous terrains so we will always have some corners and bends; also you need to slow down when approaching a roundabout…commmonsense.
Approximately a month or so ago a sink hole swallowed a house in Tampa, one person survived. How do you think that happened? Are you serious or stupid? Did you not hear of bad weather in Dominica? What make you think the driver was driving fast. Did you not realize driving at a zero speed would have had the SAME RESULT.
Ignorance is definitely bliss! Gosh! For a newly constructed road it was not up to par? Is the rubbish you’re saying on here really necessary?
Maybe its your driving that not up to par.
This is sad.. but it could have been much worst[like the Haiti earthquake,,the Japan tsunami,,the amazon floods,, the west American drought,,the Eastern American snow storms and the many other places with NATURAL disaster..These is not no human fault.
blessing morning ….road have to be done properly ..so we will avoid tragedy……………..may god protect …each one of us
Please let us know how a tragedy of this nature could be avoided.
I just do not know what to say, lost for words. What a tragedy. God comfort the families, this is just too sad!
my heart goes out to the family friends and loved ones of the ones who passed.. my deepest condolences to u……may God be with u
The lord no best
My condolences to all – family, friends, fellow Dominicans. Let’s pray for those affected and for the healing of our nation.
My deepest sympathy to the family and friends of both deceased. we all ask why in these times of sorrow but look to God and be reassured that they are in a better place
This is the time to repent and make it right with God before it’s too late. This is an eye opener. We need to open our eyes and realize that the world is slowly coming to an end and the Lord is coming soon. We need to come together in unity to pray for the country and the families of those who have perished in this accident today. We need to ask ourselves questions and decide which way are we going to continue to go in life.. May their soul rest in peace… and God be with their family and friends and also the rest of the football team
so sad
o lord help the family am fellin there pain
Too all norran’s friends who went to school with him, please accept my sympathy. I cried sooo much when i heard that he passed and i know that it is being taken hard but at least we know he is in a better place. We all know he will be playing football up there.
Two good men gone. My condolences to the families, players, and DFA staff. God bless you all.
some bus drivers don’t listen to nobody that why they die
my condolences but the government dont love fire officer, they need equipment and need man power . shame on the gov administration you all need to prepare for what is to come. train more fire officers.
Are you providing the money for the new hired officer and training?
The same moey sued for the state palace and all the other assinine not needed projects they have wasted millions on. How about starting there?
Why didn’t skerrit use public works why foreign companies?
It is not Skerrit that send,, it is neighborly to help when you have the skill and equipment.
yea i know allu will find a way to blame skerrit. SMH………….May their souls rest in peace.
yea i know allu will find a way to blame skerrit. SMH………….May their souls rest in peace.
Ever heard of sink holes swallowing large swathes of earth and people in the US and other advanced countries? What does Skeritt have to do with this tragedy. It is called a freak accident. Once you upset the natural lay of the land, freak events like this one is always a possibility. Even when your contractors are locals.
Just express your feelings of regret for the loss. That would go a long way in soothing the pain. Stop being insensitive.
public works for what, this is god work, what ever we build it can be destroyed by him.
Could Skerrit prevent the RAIN? Could Skerrit prevent the sink hole? What are you talking about? I think if we have NOTHING good to say, sometimes, we should say NOTHING AT ALL.
sorry about the two tha die may there souls rest in peace
Sympathies to the family, friends and team memebers. Hope the authorities, Engineers and Architects learn a lesson by building bridges around the island because Dominica if made up of water. The more we build roads in these areas the more they sink in.
such a tragic accident….all we can do now is pray and hope this weather eases up soon
such a tragic accident…all we can do now is pray and hope that this bad weather eases up yeah….so sad about the death
let us not stop hoping for a miracle, nothing is impossible with God
Lord be with the families of these individuals
Proceed with caution? should be Don’t proceed at all!
How can one proceed with caution where the road is open? If you have no business on the other side you should stay where you are, until further notice.
Deepest sympathy to the family and friends of those who lost ones in the accident this morning
sad to hear
sorry
I’m from Laplaine and this is so sad… I pray for comfort for their families…The authorities need to expedite their efforts… time is precious.
The devil raging Dominicans open all you eyes he walking up and down to see who he can devour.satan raging repent and come to christ before its to late come to him for protection and love.the devil dont love nobody he just want blood and souls.
REPENT AND COME TO CHRIST!!!!!
we just keep saying Come to Christ! where is Christ? Let’s stop twisting God’s word. One needs to accept Christ! we need to go nowhere Just accept Christ journey with his will in our life styles and the Holy Spirit will do the rest. Be Christlike and Live. BeLive!
God will take care of the souls of our brothers who died but he is sending a message to us who mourn. Love in all aspects Break down the walls of Religion and Love. We have twisted God’s word for to long leaning on our own understanding.
God fearing
My heart goes out the all involved, may god bless them and their families.
god is good all the time
Whilst it is true that people want to see things on the NEWS and facebook those who do that kind of thing prematurely needs to search their conscience. How would you feel to wake up in the morning to read the NEWS and see your family member or friend in a situation like that. The authorities have not even made a formal ststement.
oh Lord … im deeply saddened…tears…so sorry
disasters getting worse everywhere including Dominica. very very sad, never seen anything like this. I pray for all the families involved.
R.I.P Kurt.Hope we learn lessons here. When so much rain falls around the island PWD and DPD should be monitoring our roads around the clock. This is part of public safety.
so you mean easy so Kurt DEAD!!!! it is very saddening to hear. He was a cool pardna I must admit.
Those roads were improperly built. Huge trees back in the 60’s are the base on which tarish was dumped and then an asphalt surface was placed. The trees have rotted and now its like a doldrum just waiting for applied pressure to take lives. Sad but true
who said kurt is dead?you saying RIP? stupid. just run behind a pc and type and you na even read to understand.
RIP its’s a sad news my sympathy goes to the family and friends Dominicans leaving in St. Thomas we all are sadden may the good Lord comfort our people in Dominica as we also join with you all in prayers
so why is DBS radio broadcasting some insurance meeting story in this time of bad weather and disaster???
Hope they make it out of the ditch
I so hope the people who were still in the vehicle are found safe. And my thoughts are with the families of the football team members.
But more than ever it brings home the stupidity of having the major airport so far away from the capital city, forcing people to make that hazardous drive (even before the ditch opened up)every time they have to go to the airport.
If a government of Dominica finally shows some common sense and decides to build an international airport, please, please, please make them realise it needs to be close to Roseau and Portsmouth.
Geologically this is a very young island and incidents like the one at Pond Casse will continue to happen for thousands of years to come.
So is only roseau and Portsmouth people who use the airport. You sound so silly
no move Roseau to Marigot.
You are truly a “Foreigner” – where in or near Roseau or Portsmouth do you expect to put an international airport? Why must everything – even a natural disaster – be blamed on the government? Give me a break people.
anywhere the airport is built, it will always have a few distance to travel
I wish I could thumbs you down a million times. a pity we have too many ignorant, close minded people like you in society
I do not usually respond to comments like these but I cannot let this one pass by. So if they put the airport in or near Roseau what about the people who have to travel that same road to get to the airport? Accidents happen all the time and every where! This is just a tragedy and we all have to rally behind those who are suffering right now. No time to blame anyone. We must stop with this arrogance.
No wonder you remark got such LOW RATING. You are a damn. What does the airport location have to do with the accident? FYI we appreciate your effort, but this one was USELESS.
Correction – your remark.
oh lord!!!! help them father god please
hope all is well
we all pray that kurt and the other members are rescued and covered by the lord. so so sad my fren kurt
Tears came to my eyes, I don’t know who they are, but we are all Dominicans that is why we need to love each other doh matter what, and stop fighting each other for politics. To the family God will strengthen you through those difficult time.
So so sad hope all goes well. stay strong my ppl tske courage
god i’m calling on you for help for my people back home that is in an accident this morning,my heart goes out to everyone and i hope they found the rest of the people safe.my cuz lester langlais was in that vehicle to.
So sad to hear when people die. My god all these heart aches are too much to bear. My God you know best. You know everything happen the way it did. Heal the broken hearted and encourage the grieving. They are in a better place but we will miss them and some day we may see them again. Such a sad week.
I am so so sorry this happened. I really hope they are rescued and will be alright. people be very careful.
Words can not describe how sad this situation is. I do praye that they get them out soon! Heart goes out to their loved ones.
oh my god why them
why anyone?
sad how long they’ve actually taken to respond to such accident, what chances do the injured really have with a response team being so slack?
There are different factors that you have to consder when making such a statement.
Do you know at what time they were called and informed of the accident?? Because when DBS resported it they did not even know that a vehicle was in the ditch yet people on Blackberry had already put RIP.
We dominicans are too beffy when we need not be. How many people called fire and ambulance before informing their friends??
it happened at 5:30 they said, did the young man that escaped get through at 5:31 or 6:00? Did he use a phone to contact anyone? Or did he have to wait for somene else to just happen to be passing so early on that same stretch of road?
The area was still unstable, so you know ambulance could not just jump in and it was stated that debris was still falling in. Did you consider how covered the vehicle was? How much debris had fallen onto it? How much water was in it?
Sometimes we need to use logic before we blame others.
the road should be closed off – period!
My heart goes out to the family friends n love ones involve in this accident. Thank GOD the rest r ok. Jus pray to GOD that they find the too other in that ditch. Dead or alive.
May the good Lord comfort and strengthen them as they await rescue.
whenever an accident occurs ,tow truck must and should be dispatched @ all times.u cannot depend on fire dept to rescue/tow vehicles. diff between life and death, jst suggestion. keep all involved in prayers.
Where exactly is this? Not everyone knows where ‘Shayanne’s shop’ is!
then you need to travel dominica more and explore your country. just one glance of the picture I knew where it was before DNO could say. Its about 1/2 a mile from the Emerald pool junction..
i pray for the occupants of the vehicle dat went into the river, god be with them
Good Morning Let us pray……..we need invite the Lord’s spirit into our hearts this morning. I love you Have a blessed day. To all the victims of this unfortunate accident i pray God Love over you in abundance.
The Lords Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.
The Shepherds Psalms
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
Amen
amen and amen!!!!
we all should say dat
sad news omg stay dominicans
Hope all is well with our fellow citizens.
Think this is time we take a look at our roads and drains.
Still love this country, even on its bad days.
My heart goes out to the family, friends and love ones of the persons that are in that accident this morning at Pond Casse,my prayers are with you,may the Lord comfort you in this tragic accident.
Proof that Dominica is still a country which is ever changing. The lands have not settled.
Jah help them and they are found safe..
That’s a crater hole not a ditch! Hope the get the rest of the team out in time, fire officials and paramedics exercise extreme caution.
SO SAD
my god hope they get them
Dear Lord, our source of strength in all that ails us, guide and protect your people. Amen
I was always scared of driving through Pond Casse. This area is so dense with lots of dew and rainfall. I hope the players are okay. Please say a prayer for them.

He is such promising young man
