UPDATE: Proceed with caution in Pond Casse – Police

The ditch in Pond Casse main road
The ditch in the Pond Casse main road

The police are warning motorists to proceed with extreme caution in the Pond Casse area as a huge section of the road there has been washed away.

This is due to heavy rain which has been pounding Dominica over the past few days.

“A portion of the road is opened about 40 feet deep,” Police PRO, Inspector John Carbon, said. “Persons, especially motorists, are asked to stay away from that area because it is impassable at this time.”

The ravine-like opening is located close to Shayanne Shop, according to reports.

A vehicle with some members of the national football team has fallen into the ditch. According to reports, one of them, though injured, was able to climb out and was to taken to the Princess Margaret Hospital.

However, two others including national football team captain, Kurt Hector, were still in the vehicle and police, fire and rescue personnel on the scene were attempting to pull the vehicle out of the gushing water in that treacherous opening.

I am really saddened by the loss of more of our young men. I pray that the family and friends of these productive young men will be encouraged in the Lord. I pray that the Lord will grant healing to the young man who is hospitalized. I pray that the other members of the team will be strengthened and enabled to cope with their loss. May the Lord help, bless and encourage you all. We should not blame anyone for what happened. It is no one’s fault. Nobody expects there to be a such a split in a road. Nobody can see such a huge hole at that time and in such an environment.

As a Dominican living abroad for over 40 years I have lived with these type of disasters,it’s not because Dominica is cursed why this happened, some ignorant people with nothing to say but just want to flap their lips will always have stupid, ignorant, comments like that to make, not realising how pathetic they sounds. just recently after heavy rain, flooding, and landslides the rescue service dug out a couple in their car covered under a landslide. when the Tsunami happened was it because the Island was cursed? those ignorant people who think it’s ok to make stupid ignorant remarks at a time like this need to remember people lost family members. and hope you won’t ever have to run back to the place you called cursed, Idiot.

So sad to read this. It is a terrible accident which resulted with loss of lives of two promising young men. I have offered my condolence on the updated article.
I hope those who are injured will eventually recover from their injuries.
Heavy rain would cause such landslides. I am wondering if proper drainage and a retaining wall could be constructed to prevent further soil erosions in areas as this in order to avoid accidents. Of course this could be an expensive venture but it is worth a thought and looking into.

This is so sad, and it goes to show that we need to respect mother nature at all times, it may look good one second and the next something like this can happen, and it can happen anywhere and at anytime. With that said, I am so disgusted after ready a comment on DNO facebook page were a young man who is obviously an ignorant one at that claimed that this happened because Dominica is cursed. SAAAAAd. This sort of thing is happening every where because of the change in climate. Most recently in Chicago. But to you I say Dominica has its share of problems, and although I don’t reside there, its home and will always be. And, compare to many other countries, Dominica is a sanctuary. When push comes to shove, its idiots like you that run back to DA.

Lord Have mercy! I am here reading these comments, and I am in shock. why would anyone think that these guys were driving fast? this place is a very dark road, and according to reports, if he was going down town to meet the team, then head to the airpot for an early morning flt, it would have been impossible for him to see more than 5-10ft ahead. it is very misty in the early morning up there. People stop making all these stupid remarks, and lets all pray for the families. This could have happened to anyone of us. our entrance into this would is one thing, our exit is quite another story. jeeezzeee.. April 19, 2013

DNO, English teachers please advise Insp.PRO Carbon, that this should read as follow:

“The general public in particular motorists and other road users are asked to stay away. Etc etc etc….”

“Persons, especially motorists, are asked to stay away from that area because it is impassable at this time.”

I sincerely hope this is helpful….It is awful to hear repeated versions of Persons….persons on Q – 95…..Kairi and DBS and callers alike…

    Please be advised

    • Persons?
      April 19, 2013

OMG You are so right this persons, persons, persons is an earache! Where did it come from in Dominican English? I cannot stand to hear them on the radio just persons this persons that thinking it is cute when it really sounds dumb! Maybe they just like to say it; my gosh, sometimes I turn off the radio cause I just cannot take the “persons” who repeat “persons persons” after every other word.

      • April 19, 2013

Today is not the day to make GRAMMAR corrections. Regardless of how many times they say persons, which I think it should be spoken as “people” we should be mindful of what is going on, be careful and stay safe.

      • Justice and Truth
        April 19, 2013

“Persons” came from the big countries who were the first to coined it. It is incorrect. They also speak a lot of slang words. They soon find their way to the islands, also heard on TV and read on the Internet. Others hear it and repeat it.

Deepest and profound sympathies goes out to the families and friends who have perished in this seemingly untimely fashion. May God be with you and rest in sincerest peace.

I do not understand however why persons feel the need to blame every natural disaster on the Government. Sometimes we need to grow up and realize by doing so we place emphasis on an issue which really should not be an issue at the moment.

The least we can do is offer compassion and sympathies to those affected.

Stop waiting on an event, however stunned or astonished you may be to cast blames on anyone.

    April 19, 2013

I am still trying to figure out where exactly along the route this happened. I hope better pictures are provided in time.

I always felt that for a newly constructed road, it was just not up to par. Just around the roundabout, I always had to dig my foot in my brakes when I got to around there, there was a very uneven piece of road right before the roundabout that if you are going too fast, you may bump off the road and only God knows where you might end up. The road appeared smooth all along but unexpectedly you just run into this mess and not a sign in place to alert you.

The roads are so hazardous, it’s just the hand of God we need on this road every second.

    • Jean Bef
      April 19, 2013

    • Malgraysa
      April 19, 2013

But garcon you’re confirming you’re going too, fast. Just slow down, that’s all. I never understand why we Dominicans are always in such a hurry and still don’t arrive on time. Maybe we should leave home on time for a change.

    • get ur facts
      April 19, 2013

this is not a newly constructed road; get your bearings right before you talk and if the pictures are not giving you enough information then reserve those comments; in the meantime be careful when you drive; Dominica has mountainous terrains so we will always have some corners and bends; also you need to slow down when approaching a roundabout…commmonsense.

    • April 19, 2013

Approximately a month or so ago a sink hole swallowed a house in Tampa, one person survived. How do you think that happened? Are you serious or stupid? Did you not hear of bad weather in Dominica? What make you think the driver was driving fast. Did you not realize driving at a zero speed would have had the SAME RESULT.

Ever heard of sink holes swallowing large swathes of earth and people in the US and other advanced countries? What does Skeritt have to do with this tragedy. It is called a freak accident. Once you upset the natural lay of the land, freak events like this one is always a possibility. Even when your contractors are locals.

Those roads were improperly built. Huge trees back in the 60’s are the base on which tarish was dumped and then an asphalt surface was placed. The trees have rotted and now its like a doldrum just waiting for applied pressure to take lives. Sad but true

so why is DBS radio broadcasting some insurance meeting story in this time of bad weather and disaster???

  82. April 19, 2013

Hope they make it out of the ditch

  83. Foreigner
    April 19, 2013

I so hope the people who were still in the vehicle are found safe. And my thoughts are with the families of the football team members.
But more than ever it brings home the stupidity of having the major airport so far away from the capital city, forcing people to make that hazardous drive (even before the ditch opened up)every time they have to go to the airport.
If a government of Dominica finally shows some common sense and decides to build an international airport, please, please, please make them realise it needs to be close to Roseau and Portsmouth.
Geologically this is a very young island and incidents like the one at Pond Casse will continue to happen for thousands of years to come.

    • Wesley
      April 19, 2013

So is only roseau and Portsmouth people who use the airport. You sound so silly

    • stupid
      April 19, 2013

      no move Roseau to Marigot.

    • Tee
      April 19, 2013

You are truly a “Foreigner” – where in or near Roseau or Portsmouth do you expect to put an international airport? Why must everything – even a natural disaster – be blamed on the government? Give me a break people.

    • EARTH
      April 19, 2013

anywhere the airport is built, it will always have a few distance to travel

I wish I could thumbs you down a million times. a pity we have too many ignorant, close minded people like you in society

    • Cuthbert Joseph
      April 19, 2013

I do not usually respond to comments like these but I cannot let this one pass by. So if they put the airport in or near Roseau what about the people who have to travel that same road to get to the airport? Accidents happen all the time and every where! This is just a tragedy and we all have to rally behind those who are suffering right now. No time to blame anyone. We must stop with this arrogance.

    • April 19, 2013

No wonder you remark got such LOW RATING. You are a damn. What does the airport location have to do with the accident? FYI we appreciate your effort, but this one was USELESS.

    April 19, 2013

sad how long they’ve actually taken to respond to such accident, what chances do the injured really have with a response team being so slack?

    • hmmm
      April 19, 2013

There are different factors that you have to consder when making such a statement.

Do you know at what time they were called and informed of the accident?? Because when DBS resported it they did not even know that a vehicle was in the ditch yet people on Blackberry had already put RIP.

We dominicans are too beffy when we need not be. How many people called fire and ambulance before informing their friends??

it happened at 5:30 they said, did the young man that escaped get through at 5:31 or 6:00? Did he use a phone to contact anyone? Or did he have to wait for somene else to just happen to be passing so early on that same stretch of road?

The area was still unstable, so you know ambulance could not just jump in and it was stated that debris was still falling in. Did you consider how covered the vehicle was? How much debris had fallen onto it? How much water was in it?

Sometimes we need to use logic before we blame others.

  98. April 19, 2013

whenever an accident occurs ,tow truck must and should be dispatched @ all times.u cannot depend on fire dept to rescue/tow vehicles. diff between life and death, jst suggestion. keep all involved in prayers.

Good Morning Let us pray……..we need invite the Lord’s spirit into our hearts this morning. I love you Have a blessed day. To all the victims of this unfortunate accident i pray God Love over you in abundance.

    The Lords Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,
    hallowed be thy name;
    thy kingdom come;
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
    Give us this day our daily bread;
    and forgive us our trespasses
    as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
    but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
    now and for ever.

    Amen.

    The Shepherds Psalms

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

    Amen
