The Police Welfare Association (PWA) has accepted a proposal from the government of a five percent increase in salary over the last three years on condition that an overtime allowance is added to the package.

“We discussed the new offer in a meeting and the membership agreed to accept the five percent along with an overtime allowance,” chairman of the PWA told Dominica News Online.

He said police officers have been working long hours without compensation and pointed out Dominica is the only country which does not pay overtime to its police force.

Drigo stated that other countries have recognized that they are unable to pay the police for the long hours they work. “So what they do, they give them an overtime allowance,” he said.

Drigo remarked that the PWA has approached the government on the matter and will be returning this week to find out the verdict.

“We will know by that time whether we getting it or not. We have confidence that we will get the allowance,” he said.

The PWA had originally demanded 14 percent increase for the time period.

The government had first offered 0, 0, 0 and 1, 0, 0 but both proposals were rejected.

Recently Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, announced that the government was in the position to offer five percent.

Drigo said the majority of the general membership of the PWA agreed to accept the offer with the overtime allowance proposal because it was more attractive than the two original offers.

The Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU) has already accepted the five percent increase offered by the government.

Police officers get a monthly salary. In order to get overtime then you would have to be paid per hour. Then if u work over your schedule hours then you would get paid overtime. Maybe a yearly bonus would be more appropriate. Good luck.

If you rather the policemen go home when their duties end and not care about any crime which happened, then sure, no overtime would be great…

      D. N. O should change their policy to read: Comments and opinions will only be posted if we like “YOU” OR, you are part of our Circle, Ect, Ect, or your post will be moderated until it disappears, cause it will not generate enough traffic, or it may, or maybe not controversial enough, even if it does not violate our policy. Why illicit comments/ opinions, like/ dislike, thumbs up or thumbs down if some comments by some are longGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG, and F.O. B. gets posted. Only in Dominica! I am Dominican, Are You? Merry Christmas to all D.n.O. staff. Keep up the good Job. A.k. A. sounds like our,######. peace to all.

I get that everyone should be paid their overtime, but let me ask nah, how you police work overtime when we can’t get you all to come quick when called? it have guys that’s like NY cockroach once they check in they don’t check out they stay in the building all the time they on duty, and you would think they working, people still have to wait years for a case to call. Look how long they burn Bowdel, up till now not one word as to how that could happen with people rite there on the job? imagine you paying overtime for a police to salute the opposition leader who has not even taken the oath yet, hahahaha.
