Seawater affecting travel in Melville Hall

The sea has been invading the road in the area in recent times
The sea has been invading the road in the area in recent times

Some bus drivers are refusing to use the Marigot to Londonderry route, as the sea water near the Douglas-Charles Airport in Melville Hall is creating a risk to vehicles and residents, Parliamentary Representative of Wesley, Ezekiel Bazil has said.

The situation is that the sea has been breaching the seawall in the area for quite some time but it has worsened since the passage of Tropical Storm Erika, according to Bazil. Over the past few days, the situation has disintegrated.

“There are students who have to move from Concord, Atkinson, Marigot into the North East Comprehensive and that is a problem because some of the bus drivers have decided not to pass under this risky area,” he said. “The students sometimes have to get off the bus and walk across.”

He added, “A bypass was placed and this bypass is a misery for the road users especially for the people of the Wesley, Woodfordhill and Palm Tree area … it is a nightmare.”

Bazil stated also that in May 2015 the Minister of Public Works said monies was assigned to repair the wall and to put armour at the back of the wall, however, “From May of 2015 to January of 2016” nothing has been done.

“There has been no work from May of 2015, though he said there were $5-million aside to do that,” Bazil stated.

“People are getting fed up, it is life threatening, it is damaging the vehicles of people in the area since they see sea salt as a negative impact,” he said. “The sea water is coming over the wall with sand and stones and it is damaging people vehicles, it is a risk.”

Meanwhile, Bazil is calling on the government to address this issue urgently.

“The government need to do what it said it’s going to do by stepping in, repair the damage to the wall and they need to ensure that serious protection is placed at the back of the wall so that the sea would not be affecting the area to the extent that it is affecting it,” he said.

In January bus drivers plying that route stop services, because of that same problem.

The action has left scores of students attending the North East Comprehensive School stranded.

Those heading to work are also affected.

In January 2015 Public Works Minister, Ian Pinard said the first option to help solve the problem was to construct wave breakers behind the present seawall or divert the road.

He said the first option will cost a “huge” $25-million.

In February 2015, he said the ministry should receive the final estimate later in the week to determine the actual cost of the project, according to Pinard.

He mentioned also that necessary documents are being prepared and they should be taken to cabinet for review and a decision.

“We are definitely committed to finding a solution,” Pinard promised.

DNO will contact Pinard for a comment on the matter.

Reading some of the comments here on DNO clearly gives an indication of why our Country finds it hard to move forward in our development process. We have a serious problem here where blasts of sea water is impeding motorist and endangering lives. However, instead of coming together as DOMINICANS to demand some action to protect the property and lives of our school children, bus drivers, tourists and other every day motorists, we come here slinging political “maypwee” about who should raise funds and who should stand on walls. Shouldn’t we be ashamed. A sudden blast of water while driving can cause a serious and potentially fatal accident. I have been hit with a sudden blast of water while driving and I can tell you it was not a nice experience. It covers your windshield and obstructs your view and can cause you to panic by pressing the brakes and sliding or swerving head on into on coming traffic. So let us keep throwing insults to solve OUR issues right???

I’m just an ordinary Crab and Manicou Hunter. My specialty is catching crab and manicou when they’re not looking and putting them in my bag. Then I have to dodge greedy customs officers and police too, before I can sell them back door for a profit.
That being said, why haven’t engineers located a new route for this road? The definition of insanity is “Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.” It’s time to think and act boldly and with conviction. Reroute this road now!

      To Crab and Manicou Hunter.

Hello and good morning my people. Well according to you it seems to me that you are doing the same thing. Your specialty is to catch the Crab & Manicou, place it in a bag, you avoid Custon Officers and Police then you sell it for a profit. Isn’t that doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different result. Maybe you should try doing it the legal way.

Blame the older people for not building an International Airport. Remember MAMO did not want to build one? So shut all you mouth. Skerritt is trying his best here, he made improvements soo far to what we have, you have to learn to creep first before you walk.

Some of all you UWP people think is Skerritt that build that Airport there and that building was just placed there by Skerritt. All you just quick to blame the man for everything. Go and blame the old people who didn’t want an International Airport on Dominica in the first place.

    • Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque

You need to shut you mouth, blame the old people for what?

When the UWP was in power, in less than the four years they held power, they commence construction on an International Airport, the Labor Party, which included Skerrit shut it down, claiming that they could build an international airport for a fraction of what Edison James and the UWP was spending to build it. The airport was costing less than four hundred million dollars.

One of the reasons Skerrit, and his puppets claimed Dominica had no use for an International Airport was because Antigua and Barbados has one already! The blonder Skerrit made, spending more than half of a billion dollars on what you see at Melville Hall, where he spent two hundred million dollars more than what the UWP was spending to build a new airport, is doing his best, when he took advise from Ralph Gonzalez and screw up himself.

What best is Skerrit doing? People like you need to shut up and take crap and shove it down yours and Skerrit…

Francisco, all you you can do is chat shit. YOU ALL OLD PEOPLE DESTROYED DOMINICA’S FUTURE. UWP COLLECTED MONIES TO BUILD AN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT DURING EDDISON JAMES TIME, ASK HIM WHAT HAPPENED TO THE MONEY?

You love Skerritt soo much, it turn you BAZZOOODI. Hush your old self and correct the sins that you all did to keep Dominica down, your tongue is like a serpent just killing my island unless you change you will live in your misery.

Idiot let me tell you; know your stupid place; you are so dumb, backward, and stupid, you fail to accept that an International Airport was practically under construction when Skerrit, and all the idiotic associates were in the coalition government led by the late Roosevelt Douglas, Athie Martin; Pierre Charles and company shut down the construction, and literally chase the Trinidad Contractors and Engineers who were building it out of the country!

You so dumb the truth is poison to you. The government of Trinidad & Tobago undertook 80% the total cost of building the airport. The China government donated money, the Tiawan Government gave Dominica a loan of ten million US dollars, at an interest rate of 4%, and a grant of another ten million dollars in United States currency for free, thy did not have to pay that back.

Rosie said that money was not enough. Ian Douglas claimed they can build an International Airport for a fraction of what the UWP was spending. They are in power…

      • Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque
        January 16, 2016

They are in power for almost twenty years, yet they cannot find the soft loan with no interest Ian Douglas said they could get, then they claimed somebody in Dubai will build them an International Airport for free. You need to shut up, you are an idiot!

The same amount of money China, and Taiwan gave to the UWP they made the same amount available to Ralph Gonzalez of St. Vincent, which he used to build Argyle International Airport, while he advised your god Skerrit that Dominica does not need an International Airport, all he need to do is refurbish the terminal, and install landing lights on the runway!

Ask Skerrit and the Labor Party what they did with the money from Trinidad and elsewhere which the UWP left in the treasury, only Skerrit can account for that, I can tell you right now it was squandered on the yellow green and red Elephant called Douglas-Charles which Skerrit told you all is an International Airport!

      • Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque
        January 18, 2016

The plans were not just sitting, the construction was actually in its first phase of development. The Secondary School in Wesley was part of the project; since they had to move it from the flight path, and relocate to where it is now erected.

The there is a six-form college I believe was in the plan for the school, Athie Martin first order of business was to to order the builders, and contractors to omit the six, or seventh form college from it; when the contractor asks him why he want, that part of the structure omitted, Mr. Illustrious Athie, declared they (doh) want it cause there is one in Roseau already!

The same as they did not want the International Airport built “because Antigua, and Barbados have one already.”

        Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Way to go Labor party; I do not know if the revenue generated by Antigua, and Barbados Airport goes into Dominica’s treasury, all I know is our country is bankrupt!

Business enterprises profit from disasters and storms of every kind. It is not unusual. This is worldwide.
The same in Canada. If there is no snow or not much of it as we have experienced in Toronto, those who own trucks for clearing the snow, snow blowers ski resorts are unhappy; likewise those who are employed with them. The owners ask the government for financial help.
Those who ski are also unhappy.
The stores are also affected because their items for winter and snowy days are not being sold.
In spring, summer, fall (autumn) and winter when there are floods, sometimes power outages, damaged furnaces and the list goes on, those who repair them are happy. At such times they all make additional money.
We should not be angry with you. Having stated that, businesses have to survive. In spite of that, thank God for additional business. Do not take advantage and overcharge them
I wonder what God thinks?

You see, when people do not know better they talk crap, believing they are smart not knowing what they are talking about. Here you are ready to make comparisons with Dominica to Louisiana. Learn this:

Sea level is generally used to refer to mean sea level, an average level for the surface of one or more of Earth’s oceans from which heights such as elevations may be measured. Mean Sea Level is a type of vertical datum; a standardized geodetic reference point – that is used, for example, as a chart datum in cartography and marine navigation, or, in aviation, as the standard sea level at which atmospheric pressure is measured in order to calibrate altitude and, consequently, aircraft flight levels. A common and relatively straightforward mean sea-level standard is the midpoint between a mean low and mean high tide at a particular location.

Sea levels can be affected by many factors and are known to have varied greatly over geological time scales.

To suggest that nonsense, it to if I wrote or spoke the word good morning, to you I would have to site the originator of the word, so I would have to go back to millions of years to figure out who first said good morning, and site the person.

      January 15, 2016

Here is something educational for your benefit: Note some parts of Dominica and other Caribbean islands are already below sea level. See if you can understand this. Ever since the retreat of the ice; and I am talking about the ice age now: the crust has been slow in retuning to its preglacial level, parts of Scandinavia and North America are continuing to rise; by as much as 2 cm maybe more per year. The area at the center of the former Laurentide ice sheet has risen to approximately 560 feet in the last 7,000 years.

For ice sheets to grow on land, water must be removed from the sea; consequently, a world lowering of sea level has accompanied every period of glacial advance. The lowering of the sea causes rivers to deepen … in fact I am not wasting my time okay.

But before you talk crap perhaps you need to educate yourself in the field of Physical Geography, and stop blowing hot air!

What people seem to forget in DA is that it is not at all cheap to make you way to DA by air. It is cheaper to fly from the US to Europe than to go from the US to DA depending on your location and the time of year.

  18. Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque

Here is one of Dominica’s greatest problem: We keep on talking; talking about the same old thing every year, long before that Airport was built in 1957/58. Sea water always overwhelming that same portion of road; that has been going on long before all the people of Wesley and Marigot was born!

That has been taking place for as long as Dominica exists.

So, what should be the resolve? Any peasant with commonsense should know by now the only resolve is to change the route of the road, and the only alternative would be is to cut through after passing the Londonderry Bridge straight towards Governor, with a 180 degrees turn and take the road over the to of the airport, and build a bridge over the Melville Hall River, and take it through Melville Estate, going East adjacent to the Air port and the river connecting South of the Melville Hall River Bridge.

Problem solved. The contention will be “we doh have de money, eh boy:” well keep crying every year, you save more!

DNO I think the Headline should have been “Sea water affecting Vehicular access to Melleville Hall” no malice intended DNO. I make the observation because generally travel at, to or from Melleville Hall is problematic. Most inconveniently is the problem with air access to and from Melleville Hall.
Now I will get haters for making that statement even though the PM himself said it this week. At this juncture air access to Meleville Hall airport is a huge problem. It is actually disconcerting. How can we be talking about all these hotels and there is nothing on the table for air access. It makes no sense at all.
I lease worried about the water getting over the wall. Soon the economy will collapse.

If he spoke about that in anyway and got in trouble to pay up to $80,000, I will take a loan if I have to to help him. Not the other CRAP he is involving himself in. How about the two Parl Reps in the neighbouring constituencies put their heads together and raise the needed funds to help fix the problem. Not because they are Opposition Members it means they cannot do something for their constituencies and the country, Opposition Members in the past never just oppose for opposing sake. They actually worked for the country and their constituencies

Regardless of what they think the PM is not God. We know he does with the help of God what seems as miraculous with the little we have; but he is not God and if UWP put the same 100% as the PM and the DLP Government do, we could see a better Dominica. That has been happening for hundreds of years. If the people in Dominica were not ignorant and dumb, they would have long ago change the route of that part of the road between Londonderry Estate, and Melville Hall Estate, the land are no longer Estate owned, they are now privately owned!

Skerrit can build a fifty foot Back Wall if he wish that will not eliminate the problem. What I am seeing in the picture the braking waves are more than thirty feet tall; if you have a wall that is less than ten feet tall, how is that going to prevent the braking waves from overwhelming, and flooding the street?

No amount of Back Wall will ever be enough, or tall enough to prevent the sea from doing what it wants to do, that is another natural phenomena in our country!

Hello and good afternoon my people. Well Grace isn’t a full as you making her out to be. She offered the most practical way to solve this problem beside from rerouting the road which would be expensive. We have many rivers with big stone/bolders which we can used to put into the sea to break the waves. We can’t build a higher wall because it would obstruct the runway if a plane approach from the sea or if the plane need to used the full length of the runway for takeoff. Japan and Norway used this same technique but they put the rocks into a wire mesh and stack them on each other. In my sweet Dominica we tend to make simple things seems much more difficult than they actually are.
