Senior citizens should enjoy retirement – Minister

Gloria Shillingford.

(DNO) Minister of Community Development and Gender Affairs Gloria Shillingford says senior citizens in Dominica should enjoy the benefits of a comfortable, peaceful and fulfilling retirement.

Shillingford told the Annual General Meeting of the Dominica Council on Aging at the Fort Young Hotel yesterday morning that the elderly can only enjoyed if the younger ones take steps to provide for their needs.

“It is important to recognize that many senior citizens can still enjoy the social aspects of life and so their organizations should encourage them to participate in activities such as backyard gardening, visiting other groups, attending social events, becoming involved in church and community groups and generally participate in community life,” she said.

Shillingford said this will foster a sense of belonging which is critical to their happiness and well being.

“Those who are active physically and mentally active would not be denied the opportunity, to continue to contribute to national development if they want to do so,” she added

The featured speaker at yesterday’s event was Dr Gerald Grell.

He said about a 3rd of the elderly are faced with the issue of emotional and psychological abuse.

According to him, abuse of the elderly at the work place is a growing concern.
