Taiwan donates to Dominica relief efforts

OECS Director General, Dr. Didacus Jules accepted the funds on the behalf of Dominica

The Republic of China (Taiwan) has donated US$100,000 which will go towards relief and rehabilitation efforts in Dominica following the passage of Tropical Storm Erika.

Dominica does not enjoy diplomatic relations with Taiwan after ties were severed by Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, in March 2004 in favor of China and the donation was made through the OECS Commission.

Dr. Didacus Jules, Director General of the OECS accepted the check on the behalf of Dominica at a ceremony held at the organization’s Headquarters in St. Lucia earlier this week.

At the ceremony, Taiwan’s ambassador to St. Lucia, James Chang, expressed sympathy to the families who lost love ones and to the people of Dominica in general.

“We all understand that extreme climate change, increasing global warming and rising incidents of natural disasters have endangered all of our lives in one way or another. Taiwan as a member of the global village should make its efforts in the face of these global issues,” he said.

He pointed out that Taiwan has been an active provider of humanitarian assistance globally, especially following natural disasters.

Chang thanked the OECS for making the donation possible and he hoped that ties between Taiwan and the OECS be further strenghtened.

Jules conveyed appreciation of the government and people of Dominica for the contribution.

He stated that following the devastation of Tropical Storm Erika, the OECS Commission had been engaged in efforts to secure assistance for the rehabilitation of the country. In this regard, he expressed pleasure at the positive response of the government of Taiwan.

He stated that the funds will be transferred immediately to the government of Dominica because of the urgency of the situation on the island.

Taiwan has formal diplomatic ‎relations with three OECS member states, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Kitts, Nevis and St. Lucia

Taiwan? but isn’t that contrary to the one china policy?. I think politicians should be very careful of what the do and say because it will come back and bite them on the butt. By right if you have to look at it for what it is and the china policy, the government should not take that money from Taiwan.
Sad times in Dominica, sad times.

P.M. send the money back. We cannot accept money from Taiwan, this is a violation of our one China policy. How can we accept money from another China when we only support the One China Policy. Taiwan does not have the right to exist so we must remain true to our principles and tell Taiwan go to hell, we do not want your D… money, this would be a betrayal to China, the great Peoples’ Republic that has been our saviour for the last ten years.
So P.M. I humbly submit that you tell the OECS to give the money to the other three puppet countries that still have diplomatic relationship with Taiwan.

Harry mack stop being an A-Hole .. this is a country reaching out from a moral stand point and also from a humane standpoint, (two ethical possessions which you lack)… to help a small Island in an extremely difficult situation. your comments has NO substance and I really wonder why it was published at all.. people like you sicken me…. really this is the most educative comment you could write…. you cant get any more lower as you have reached sea level with this rubbish of yours… … This goes to show, once gain you do not want Dominica to get any help and would rather wish it stay s in it MIRE and MUCK, rather than to receive HELP From Persons in much more better situations. the Taiwanese saw it fit to help Dominica, this means they have a heart and have forgiven and move on.. you should do the same… but obviously you have not are most limey to be an insane individual….. HOLDING A GRUDGE. ONCE AGIN THIS IS NOT ABOUT YOU IT IS ABOUT DOMINICA.

Some people are cray cray. China gave US $300K in immediate dusater releif the day after Erika, with a promise of further technical assistance in the long run, so I am not sure why anyone would be using the $100K from Taiwan as a reason to attack the Prime Minister for establishing diplomatic relations with China. Some people just never relent of their idiotic agendas which have no basis in reality.

    September 17, 2015

Thanks Taiwan, though you disappeared from our shores like a ‘passing cloud.’ We will forever remember your love for the people of Dominica.
When our late PM, Mary Euginia Charles established relations with you, she knew you cared and everything was transparent. We all knew what was on the MOU and there was no need to hide anything. Though ms. Charles left us many years ago, You never attempted to make any demands on us.

We now have a new lover but we do not know the terms and conditions as MOU is still a secret. We hope We do hope that when our beloved is gone from earth, or is replaced as PM, no one will come with MOU and demand that we pay back per terms of the MOU.

Dominica says a big thank you to you and we know you are gone but not forgotton

After Erica the song of Ron and the Look us band became my #1 song; but after hearing of the generosity of Taiwan, I got emotional and began singing the song below

Packing up the dreams God planted
In the fertile soil of you
    I can’t believe the hopes He’s granted
Means a chapter of your life is through

But we’ll keep you close as always
It won’t even seem you’ve gone
‘Cause our hearts in big and small ways
Will keep the love that keeps us strong

    And friends are friends forever
If the Lord’s the Lord of them
And a friend will not say never
‘Cause the welcome will not end
Though it’s hard to let you go
In the Father’s hands we know
That a lifetime’s not too long
    To live as friends

Taiwan, in broken relationships the one that gave and was sent packing usually use all means to force a pay back. That was not the case with you and today you are there to remind of what true love really means. Thank you

Thank you very much Taiwan. You have demonstrated what true love and care really mean. Your gift has taught us how to appreciate Matthew 5:43-44 -43 “Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.”

If Mamo were alive she would feel very proud that she chose to established diplomatic relations with Taiwan. I know Rosie and Piero are now applauding you for your foresight and together all three of you are weeping about our broken relationship and the manner in which it was broken. Peiro, please send us a reminder of the pain you endured while PM and the Bados experience

That level of sophisticated (no quid pro quo) thinking is a far cry from what we have (tit for tat) among the powers that be.
The passage of Erika through Dominica which can be considered an event of cataclysmic proportion should teach everyone lessons, one of which is, ‘each one teach one and each one, reach one’. A bigger lesson is that there should be no ‘US and THEM’; we are all ‘ONE’ on this domain and that what can happen may happen _ it does matter who you are, what you are or where you are. Death lays it’s icy hands even on kings; scepter and crown must crumble down and be made equal to the dust.

      Boy, what are you saying?

Don’t you know that Taiwan thus far is a sovereign nation; an independent nation; what does China have to do with money donated by Taiwan to the people of Dominica?

Skerrit broke diplomatic relationship with Taiwan on the advise of the Chines government. It the China’s ambition, and intention to annex Taiwan.

After the invasion and occupation of that country, China hope that puppets like Skerrit, and some of the poor nations of the world which China uses as a dumping ground for their cheap, and inferior commodities, and the peanut change handouts they give to them will support their evil and barbaric actions against Taiwan in the United Nations.

      Hahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahah! Skerrit, boy, ah…
