Thomas Letang calls for special forum on Haiti

Letang

General Secretary of the Public Service Union Thomas Letang is calling for the setting up of a special forum to discuss matters affecting Haiti.

Haiti has been plagued by decades of coups, hurricanes, embargos, economic collapse and a recent earthquake that left hundreds of thousands dead.

Letang said CARICOM should show greater commitment to the people of Haiti.

He said Haiti played a significant role in the independence process and should not be abandoned by CARICOM.

“There is a lesson in all of this for us. They are going through economic and political problems and we shouldn’t abandon them. I believe the Caribbean needs to come together and have a special forum where they can decide on how to help Haiti,” he said.

He said Haiti needs to know that Dominica is behind them.

What a hateful, spiteful, selfish generation you have become. Then you expect to be blessed? What happened here in August 29 1979 could happen again or worse, then you will be begging for mercy. Tempt God still You never know, you might end up having to beg Haiti for a place to put your foot down – we have PLENTY volcanoes.

if public servants had their worth, they would be in a better position to provide assistance or sponsorship for any cause…..but when they have to scrape and try to get blood from stone to provide for their family….because this man is not acting in the capacity he has been assigned. what do you expect my friend???? and empty hand cannot give nothing!!!!…….Mr letang should enable hard working Dominicans to get their dues, to that they would be in the position to help the hatians….do you get it now??? do u understand??????? do you see the perspective?????? or are you void of the capacity to understand english???

Mr.Letang, you are so correct that a special forum needs to be held for Haiti. Haitians themselves should recognize that and pursue convening this forum religiously. All the political and NGO leaders of Haiti should get together for this Forum and, if necessary, ask Caricom to assist by providing consultants from a wide section of their human resource base: labour, finance, public works, business, education, etc., etc.

Maybe you could be seconded to them for at least one year given your concern and empathy for them. BUT, Haitians must take the lead to help themselves. Millions of United States dollars were raised by international agencies for Haiti following the 2010 earthquake there. Those funds can make a real difference if they can get to use them properly and if they reach those who really need help.

We could assist Haiti, Yes…….Forums are mainly big heads coming together spending poor people money..Somebody go to that forum with a designed business plan…..then I could Say that we up to something…all we do is talk and more talk…with no action….act!!!! come up with a plan….

It should be mandatory that before any foreigner gets citizenship should be able to speak English fluently. Look at the UK for e.g they must do life in the UK test.

It is a good means the government can use to make money.

If mr. Letang is addressing this issue in a private capacity I have no problem with it. However, as a union leader I would have thought that he has enough on his plate to tackle the
problems facing his own members first.

It’s very good for you or any other country to comes out in support of Haiti, to try and eradicate all of the problems that are plaguing Haiti. The problem with Haitian, they have to change their behavior its stink, destroy it utterly, my philosophy about that country, because of their attitude! I believed is only God, who can help them, you can pure in billions of dollars into the economy, it still wouldn’t help? The people need to change. I just hope they don’t travel across the Atlantic Ocean with their raft to populate the rest of the Caribbean countries with their ignorant behavior…

Personally sir if you were a man who demanded results from your own specific position of purpose. You would have already won my support for this and any cause u take up. But since u are not that man, u are of no use to any cause, because I for one have no CONFIDENCE in your VOICE.. Which is the cause of me questioning your commitment to the people u serve and thus your integrity.

Public servants have enough issues for Mr Letang to discuss, does he have interests in Haiti, if so, hand over the mantle to someone who will look into issues affecting public officers, eh eh,

    • Gabriel
      August 26, 2011

Possie rush, it sounds like you are saying that since you want more than you have in your plate, you should not make an effort to help a man who has no plate. Is that what you mean?

      • possie rush
        August 26, 2011

No am not saying dat, i believe Haitians have too much plate to eat in, thats their problem and Mr Letang need to do what we public officers paying him to do, he should dedicate his time to public servants issues, not haitians, they have thier representtives
