The National Bank of Dominica (NBD) has made a cash donation of $50,000 to two organizations on island as part of relief effort following the passage of Tropical Storm Erika which devastated the island on August 27.

Managing Director of NBD, Ellingworth Edwards, said at a presentation ceremony on Thursday that the recieving organizations are the Dominica Relief Fund and the Dominica Red Cross.

“Today National Bank is making cash donations to two organizations in a total sum of $50, 000,” he said. “Firstly, we will be contributing $30,000 to the Dominica Relief Fund to assist the government in its recovery and reconstruction effort. We will also like to make a presentation to the Red Cross to allow them to continue relief efforts to the families and the individuals who have been directly affected by Tropical Storm Erika.”

Edwards also expressed deepest condolences to those affected by the storm.

“The journey back will be very challenging for us as a people…” he stated.

President of the Dominica Red Cross, Phillip White thanked NBD for its contribution as well as other organizations locally, regionally and internationally who have came onboard to provide assistance.

“We at the Red Cross are delighted that a number of persons have come forward as volunteers in this trying time. We are very elated and we are hoping that after everything has settled down, a number of persons have indicated that they would like to become members of the Red Cross,” White stated.

He said the money received will assist the Red Cross greatly, noting that relief process in terms of food items will commence today (Thursday) in the Bath Estate area.

“We will be in the Paradise Valley this afternoon making our donations of food items to the community of Bath Estate,” he revealed.

Meantime Marketing Executive for the NBD, Suzanne Joseph- Piper, announced that the company’s sister Bank, the Grenada Cooperative Bank has contributed relief items to staff of NBD and families who have been impacted by the storm.

“We have a number of employees who were impacted by Tropical Storm Erika. Quite a few of our staff members hail from the community of Petite Savanne and other areas that were impacted by the storm,” she said.

He said the Grenada Cooperative Bank reached out to NBD after receiving the news of the devastation caused by Erika

“We will be distributing the relief items to our staff who are most impacted as well as the evacuees at the Grand Bay Centre, the community of Coulibistrie and also two families that we have identified in Petite Soufriere who have lost everything,” she explained.

To date the Grenada bank has donated 140 cases of water, lining supplies, can foods and a variety of other items.
