US, British providing disaster relief to Dominica

The United States of America the United Kingdom are among countries providing aid to Dominica.

The United States Embassy in Barbados said USAID is in the process of providing humanitarian assistance totaling USD$50,000 for the immediate supply of storm-related disaster relief supplies. Working through the Dominica Red Cross, USAID will provide essential relief items to citizens in nine hard-hit areas identified by the government of Dominica.

USAID/OFDA has deployed a four-member assessment team to provide initial damage assessments and needs analysis.

The team is expected to be joined by Regional Advisor John Kimbrough, and Disaster Response and Management Specialist, Audrey Mullings, who will provide on-island coordination of the United States Government’s disaster response efforts, including helicopter reconnaissance

Additionally the UK Department of International Aid said a British ship is sailing to Dominica with relief supplies.

The Department said the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) Lyme Bay has been rerouted to assist humanitarian relief efforts here.

The British ship is carrying a range of disaster relief stores including bedding, shelter, torches and stretchers, as well as a Lynx Mk 8 helicopter and considerable supplies of fresh water.

RFA Lyme Bay is stationed in the Caribbean and as part of its primary task, acts as a first responder in the event of a disaster in the region.

British Member of Parliament Justine Greening said, “It is clear that Dominica has borne the brunt of this storm, with a number of deaths already confirmed and hundreds of people made homeless. Roads, bridges and health clinics have been affected and large parts of the island are without water and electricity. Part of RFA Lyme Bay’s tasking is to respond to just this sort of emergency and the ship is already en route to assist with relief efforts. As well as essential supplies and helicopter support, the ship can also provide vital expertise to help clean-up operations and recovery efforts.”

Victoria Dean, British High Commissioner to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, said: “We’ve been very saddened in the UK to see the devastation that this tropical storm has had on Dominica. The UK Government is working hard to offer the very best support we can. Our Department for International Development (DFID) has already committed £300,000 in immediate humanitarian aid and I’m very pleased that a British Government ship, RFA Lyme Bay, is on its way now to Dominica with further emergency supplies and expertise. Our thoughts and prayers are with all Dominicans.”

People of Dominica I live in Florida USA and am very sad and concerned for you. We were bracing for Erika to hit us next .As soon as we knew we were safe I wanted to donate to Dominica and quickly found my fellow Americans had no idea you were hit. Even Floridians had no idea as our news is not covering the story so much else is going on for the news to cover. All I talk to here in Florida have no knowledge of Dominica. So honestly most dont even know you were hit. I will donate to Red Cross and have asked friends to but honestly i dont expect them to as they didnt hear about Erika. please know some americans do know and care and donate. If i were physically well and able to travel i’d come myself to help. GOD BLESS YOU PROTECT YOU AND STRENGTHEN YOU.

Telemaque, to tell you the truth, your comments are downright deplorable, really, really, deplorable! Especially with your bold lies about your Me, Myself, and I

I cannot understand how you are claiming God, which should mean that you have a conscience–and to be conducting that sort of language, following that kind of disaster which struck our Dominica–man that is not the language of Holy Spirit, you see! So you are lying about having God as well–but I never believed about that either.

Just imagine that you, yourself said that DNO threw out your comment to their article of the “Bishop”. The man was sympathizing with the people of Dominica pertaining to the calamity of a storm, I am sure of that–what you wrote must have been so disgusting; no wonder why DNO would not print it on their board. Man do you even know that you are an embarrassment to people who may know you well enough? For crying out loud!

Greatful for all the help.us/british/every penny has helped to fill our empty basket. Good effort on the elected officials for identifying assistance needed and engaging the international community.

Let us not rest our eternal hope. On foreign assistance let’s use this tradegy for good. Government of today look at this as opportunity of exposure find markets, sell ourselves as a destination, create new relations and strengthen old bonds. All isn’t lost let us work to revive industry agriculture/tourism.. After all what happens when the few millions in aid goes away.

The opposition parties The Freedom and UWP should get together along with other patriotic Dominicans should come
together and form a Commity for National Salvation to steer Dominica away from that ALBA Organization that the Prime Minister have brought the Nation into as you guys can see this only lead us into oppression.
After this C.N.S is formed with the people behind you and the government is moved you along with regional observers the
Commity can set a date for general election within 6 to 9 months, then passports belonging to the cabal must be taken away
and steps be taken to find out where all the money for the sales of our passports are banked. Properties should be seized for they belong to the state. This is serious people must face truth and see how their lives are heading, do something before it gets too late. These guys will run and leave the Nation in misery.

There was never a question about whether or not the US and the British would assist. They have a very long history in humanitarian assistance in times of crisis like what we have in Dominica today. The question we have is, why did we not see them with boots on the ground rescuing people, erecting small tents and helping save lives like they have done in other countries around the world and in Dominica after hurricane David? I mean while we are thankful for the helicopter service we got from Trinidad, it is very clear that if the Americans were here a day after the storm like they have always done, maybe the result would be different. Though we do not want to blame anyone at the moment, if anti US statements made by the authorities had any part to play in this.

Mr Skerrit is so right, America will not give us the full scale help that is so desperately needed at this time even though we declare the island a state of emergency , because of our so called situations with China and Venezuela.

  11. September 1, 2015

Rebecca Theodore why are you so hateful and evil in your thoughts and words. You should crawl back from under the stone you came from.

  12. I heard some and read what some wrote; I cannot believe some of our people. I mean, some of these same people were telling the world how bad things were, some brought pictures to show the world how badly off Dominica was. Now the world is seeing the many untruths told.

We were so ungrateful for things we had, instead of giving Thanks and Praise to the Lord above, they were ridiculing how God had Blessed us. Now we can see what hardship is really like. We’ve been asking for it.

Some asked for bad things to happen 365 days a year for many years; well we have it. Water was plentiful, but we were not satisfied; Instead of giving God thanks for our 365 rivers where water was plentiful; we were cursing him for not giving us more. Maybe we should try asking for Good from now on.

I am listening Lord, I will get down on my knees and give you Praise and Thanks, because I realize it could have been so much worst. God Bless our Country, our Government and People.

I mean with that crisis it took them four days to show up?

I also recall the Sea Bees of the US military which O.J through US Ambassador Sally SHELTON BROUGHT MASSIVE ENGINEERING AND OTHER RELIEF TO DOMINICA and were all made honorable citizens ..
Venezuela was at the forefront with helicopters and massive assistance..so did the pl480 food program and catholic relief and the UN as well as the nonaligned movement all mobilized by then PM O.J
We did get great cooperation from leaders like George Odlum who came in to assist as well as PM Tom Adams who gave a state visit tot he Dominica Pm AND to use the Barbados position with diplomatic offices to focus on AID fro the country
The trip throughout the US STATES AND AGENCIES AND CANADA and to the UN by the PM TOGETHER WITH DR LIVERPOOL /PHILIP NASSIEF /COLIN BULLY AND JUDITH PAESTINA was the foundation
as well as PARIS London etc with CAB.SEC .JULIAN JOHNSON and the directive to send BERNARD WILTSHIRE TO THE NONALIGNED CONFERENCE were all used to bring Dominica the massive aid received .

Dominicans need to be more sensitive to the families directly affected by hurricane Erica. I am not impress at all after listening and reading to all the garbage, and politics the Dominican media encouraged during a time like this. You guys scare people, and because of that I have not contributed a cent to assist. I will wait until all the drama is over, and decide what to do. I am not alone. It is so shameful living outside of Dominica waiting to hear some positive updates, instead people discussing who should get helicopter ride, mass burial, and finding faults with everything the Government do. This is not the time for that we are not impressed. Stop blaming each other for what happened. This is not your time. We want to help the people who are directly affected. If you have nothing good to say. Say nothing.

  18. September 1, 2015

God be merciful to us Hear my people again. We are still in the hurricane season. We must be thank full. We are bursting our backs over seas and sending more help. Stop it
I take the time out to thank all those who help and is helping my people.

Everything is temporary; it only lasts for a while. You will pick up the pieces and prod on, always with the help of God. Thank God Dominica is receiving help and there will be more forthcoming. This is the godly, friendly and generous spirit in a time as this.

With all what’s happening you all won’t change. Lord have mercy on them.

      • You sound disappointed that aid is on the way. Shouldn’t you be happy that it is coming? If it is coming to the Red Cross isn’t that also a wonderful thing for Dominica? Who is going to benefit from the aid? Isn’t it the people in Dominica who are suffering?

Why or Why Jesus Christ are some of our people so negative even when our country is facing such a huge disaster.

I would like to thank every individual and country who see our people and country plight and have decided for humanitarian reasons and also friendship for reaching out. I pray our citizens at home and abroad will be filled with love towards their fellowmen, and put aside their party colors and come together as a people of a country.

God Save Our People. To all those in Dominica who are working and/or volunteering their services and time to assist our country and her citizens, I thank you. To our Government we have complete faith in you and we are in solidarity with you in this trying time.

      • The Real Facts
        August 31, 2015

The Red Cross always comes to the help and rescue of any country when a disaster strikes. They do work on their own. Just as they will also offer advice, they may have to take some directives from the government or someone in authority. This means to work and cooperate with one another. If there is no cooperation you should imagine what chaos will ensue. Nothing constructive will be achieved and this is not the nature of the Red Cross or any other concerned with assisting those in need.

Will you and people like you give it up? Your own post says the USAID will provide essential relief items to citizens in nine hard-hit areas identified by the GOVERNMENT OF DOMINICA not by the red cross. Can you please give us some space to grieve and recover?

Whether you want to get heart failure over it, the Government of Dominica is our government not his or mine just as all other previous governments elected under the same electoral system and constitution for decades.

I’m assuming that this report/article by DNO is accurate, or do I now have to verify everything that DNO reports from here on? I’ll say one thing, not everyone in Dominica is on the hate train because all hate trains must self-destruct at some point. Trust me!

There are some who live from day to day and who do not care. If I recall over a year ago DNO showed where some people were dumping their garbage in the river. Some also dumped them near the Roseau Cemetery, if not behind the wall. If caught, they should be arrested and charged.
These people need to be educated and to be told over and over again to cease doing that. I hope in the near future the government or the mayor will do something concrete about that.

Kid on the block; Facts), you are a fool, in the first place to get Dominica going again will cost many millions of dollars. And if things are to go right we need more than a billion dollars. The United States are only contributing $50,000.00 dollars at this time.

Assuming we are talking fifty thousand dollars in United States currency, that is equivalent to only EC$134,000.00 dollars, and if you do not know the meaning of “EC” it means Eastern Caribbean Currency, Dominica money. That is nothing, the help Dominica need right now, is far beyond that!

You and your kind are so stupid, all you are concern about is the free cloth, and free food some of you anticipate in the interim, but what about the years to come?

Francisco, I do think DNO should not allow your types of comments which insult the dignity and intelligence of its readers/users.
You are the fool and stupid one for you are lacking in communication and diplomacy skills to also respond respectfully to the comments of others.
Who do you think you are, you Marigot native? You are no more intelligent than others who comment on this Website. You are out of place. Know your place. Learn diplomacy and respect. If you had those godly and humane traits you would utilize diplomacy.
You need to return to school as a child who is learning discipline and respect to mention a few skills and virtues. I am still being respectful to you, responding accordingly. I hope this is the last time you call intelligent people derogatory names. OK!

Telemaque you should known that the US or UK and every other international entity will need to have a needs assessment done to determine the level of assistance needed by Dominica, but the immediate response is what it is , “in the mean time.”

      • Independent Thinker
        September 1, 2015

Every cent helps. What’s being given by the U.S. & UK is a start that we need. When did Dominica and its people become so negative. The article is clear an assessment will be done and then…. Do we realise that people internationally ….. Non-Dominicans included are reading these blogs and like me are wondering what is really going on.

      • September 1, 2015

People like you were the ones who have been calling a “revolution” in Dominica–except that your were speaking about gun, bombs, and dynamites–living in Los Angeles, you would not be touched..

But God said no to that kind, which would definitely cause much bloodshed, but He sent wind, rain, and water instead–I am sorry about the people who experienced the physical impact of it– but that cala was a “Spiritual” revolution from God in His quest to hit the peoples mind–but people like you are still dumb to understand; here you are going on and on with your sound of an empty and dark barrel–along with that “Hahahahahahahahahaha!” of yours; what is the reason for it, at a time like this?

      • September 1, 2015

        That Hahahahahahahahahaha is another post

On the other note I am glad to know that Prime Minister Skerrit’s mind received that message from God; most likely he himself is not even aware of; but that the way God works through people. It is only God who would put that idea in his mind to call for the inclusion of Mr. Linton and his members of Parliament–the is the best thing he could do, right now; and I glad the Mr. Linton simply accepted.

I also know that God has put the minds of the majority of us, in Dominica, at its mode to start functioning with Love, through peace and unity–for that is His ways of Life.

Your stupidity and darkness–including the rest of you– cannot prevent God’s work for our Dominica. David said in one of his Psalms: “Weeping endures through the night but Joy comes in the morning”

For us the night is going to be much longer than 12 hours –but when the morning comes the joy will also be present with it–that is hope by faith..

@Telemaque I can believe you. The article stated that, “The United States Embassy in Barbados said USAID is in the process of providing humanitarian assistance totaling USD$50,000 for the immediate supply of storm-related disaster relief supplies.” Key words “immediate supply of storm-related disaster relief supplies.” Why are you calling the “Kid on the block” a fool?

Any assistance right now is much needed. I can’t say that I am at all surprised that even in the time of disaster and suffering, we a so still divisive in our words and our actions.

I countinue to pray for the healing of the Nation on all levels.

Yes, but you are forgetting that this Telemaque want of nothing, and if any if my sister in Wesley suffered any damage, she would not have to beg for help, for I would give her what she need.

You all think a hundred and thirty-four thousand dollars EC, is a lot of money, how many billions they spend per year on war, and how many billions the donate to countries in the Middle East, think in terms of Egypt, how many billions they to them per year free for the asking.

I am not happy about the disaster, but I am happy that scum like you who call me an idiot will fell some pressure even for one day! Let me tell you something, I have motor vehicles park in my back yard costing more than a hundred thousand US dollars each, in Dominica, they cost more than two hundred seventy dollars each. I say that you to impress you I know how to count money, and the value. I do not play for peanut change.

“God in His quest to hit the peoples mind–”(Elizabeth).

You see Elizabeth, right there is where you and I differ; because although God allows things to happen, God does not perpetrate evil on people, The recent experience from that tropical storm is the work of Satan, right out of the pit of hell.Think in terms of Job in the Bible.

You are one who believes that Skerrit is a gift from God to Dominicans, but I confess if Skerrit is the best God has for Dominica, we all need to pray to God to remove Skerrit from the life’s of our people.

If Skerrit was a gift to our people by God, Skerrit would have not need to bribe as many people to vote for his party. Did God give Skerrit thirty million plus dollars to pay people to vote for him?

If that’s the case you are limiting the power of God. God, is not in Skerrit heart (sprit)! And I still say I yearn for the removal of that man by revolution, or any means necessary, cause him to bad oui!

      • September 5, 2015

Telemaque, that is what I already said, you are too dumb to understand physical things, much worse for understanding spiritual things, which I always speak or write, you have no access to that kind of wisdom.

I am glad to know that you acknowledge not being like me–there is no comparison between you and me, whatsoever–are you not taking into consideration that number people who cannot see eye to eye with you on this website? So how can you compare you negative and dead mentality with anyone, especially me. You are not qualifies eh!

You also have no wisdom and intelligence to speak against Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, you could never sit on the man’s chair; so when are you going to decide to knock it off about him?

Too bad that DNO is taking to long to print the comments on its board, look above and see what I said to you, about your comments–why would you think that I want to be compared with you.

Well, it is no shame to be from the village of Marigot, but I am so proud of my birth place, the village of Wesley, that I hesitate to deny that!

You Facts machine, you are a bigot, you hate Marigot people; but when they chase you out of Canada, you might be happy to seek refuge in either Marigot or Wesley!

I bet you cannot tell me where in Dominica you are from: You know why, because you come from nowhere important in Dominica, far as I am concern you do not even know where in Dominica you were born, that is why you have no name eh, you are a dyableless. There is a sentence in a book, “Imitation of Christ”. It states, run here and there, you will find no peace” and “as long as there are human beings. . .”
I am surprised that they did not return to Haiti and so many of them still reside in Dominica. I suppose some of them are affected by the tropical storm.
Life is uncertain. We never know when and where disaster will strike or what will befall us. We can only hope for the best, with the help of God.
Should anything happen to us and we are still alive, we pray that God will help us through others and that we will eventually get over it.

Just as the false story was spread all over the place that the US was not requested to help, this allegation of distribution of items along party lines may ( I said may) also be another wicked propaganda item. I’m sure that some genius will soon come up with another allegation to explain the US assistance now.

Of course, once it is something negative so many of us run with it without analysing or seeking confirmation. I just wish we could occupy ourselves with positive activities at this time to try to bring relief to our hurting brothers and sisters.

Unfortunately, Tulip is right. All households in communities without water for example should receive water. However, the process is such that they are picking and choosing which households should receive water. Whatever the criteria is, it is unclear. It appears that known non-supporters of the governing party are not receiving water. So sad that true unity cannot exist during these trying times.

At a time as this there will be some fabricating and exaggerating stories. Low minds. Those who repeat that, also are of the same minds.
Dominicans who are affected are in dire need of help and this is what everyone should concentrate on, to assist the needy and take them out of this dilemma..
Remember prior to this terrible tropical storm, the UWP supporters were lambasting the PM for assisting the needy, they, stating that he is turning Dominica into a welfare State. I reiterate these are low minds since every country of the world has poor people who receive financial assistance from their government.
I am wondering if this storm is not the hand of God who has been listening to their insulting, ungrateful and derogatory words and was angry as I have always stated. I had warned them about. They better be careful for the worst is yet to come. God does not appreciate complainers and ungrateful people.

As I had always stated, D/ca and nationals, prior to this awful storm, was in a better shape than in bygone years. Many of us know that. Some people of today lack appreciation and respect. They are too haughty. It gets me angry as well when I recall what some of them wrote against the PM on this Website. Then some who respond as Francisco Telemaque who is undignified and insults those who comment. These are not nice people.
What come out of their mouths and also their fingers through the keyboard leave much to be desired. They take pride insulting others and not appreciating what they write, as if they, the critics know better.
