The Parliamentary Opposition, the United Workers Party (UWP), led by the Leader of the Opposition, Honourable Lennox Linton has scheduled a number of visits to Communities most affected by the destruction wrought on the island due to the passage of Tropical Storm Ericka.

The UWP Team intends to meet with residents who were most affected by the ravages of the Storm, to commiserate with them and to find out how they were coping almost a month since the Storm impacted them.

The visits come about despite the fact that these communities had been visited, numerous times, immediately following the Storm’s passage by Parliamentary Representatives, Senators and Caretakers of the UWP.

It is well recorded the comfort brought to residents by the UWP TEAM Dominica throughout their previous visits.

UWP TEAM Dominica schedule of visits are as follows:-
• Coulibistrie, Colihaut, Bioche and Dublanc on Thursday 24th September, 2015 from 10:00 a.m.
• Boetica and Delices on Saturday 26th September, 2015
• Good Hope, San Sauveur and Petitte Soufrierre on Tuesday 28th September, 2015

Each visit will commence at 10:00 a.m.

Additional visits are planned for the residents of other impacted communities.

it is quite sad that even after what hapen during storm erica you people are still trying to cause trouble. we are all brothers and sister and i think it is time we put that shit they call politics aside and start with the the nation building. i commend the uwp team dominica for going around at this time. it will do the people good to know that people still care about them. in dominica nothing pleases us. if they were not going to visit you guys would say that they dont care. now they are going you all say they do it for political points. what is wrong with dominicans. everyone was doing their part in cleaning their constituency. i know Mr Joshua Francis has been working tirelessly to bring normalcy to Roseau South. Relax and just love each other and accept the love and concern that others bring to u. you people need to grow up

I wish to take this opportunity to congratulate and encourage the parliamentary Opposition United Workers Party UWP-Team Dominica and its leader, Honourable Lennox Linton on your plans to visit the communities most affected by the passage of Tropical Storm Erika… This is a very good and strategic gesture and I wish you all well as you bring your message of hope to the affected people.

Everyone has a role to play in the rebuilding process and the Parliamentary Opposition’s role is very important in the process. I trust that you continue to play an effective role as part of the Parliamentarian Advisory Caucus/ Group and hope that your many suggestions and recommendations will be given due consideration by the Government side… I want to also encourage you to continue the work you have started…

Why does it need to be strategic gesture? Should be born out of their good hearts not an ulterior motive.

        September 24, 2015

It is a good and strategic decision if you prefer that tone instead… These honourable men had to take a strategic decision to decide to visit those communities most affected rather than visit every where… and I am sure that their decision is born out of their good heart to serve the people… and I do not think that they have any ulterior motives with their decision to visit these communities… I am very proud of them for deciding to do this… it shows that they have a heart, and there is responsibility, leadership, and commitment to serve the people…

Too many haters, unable, unwilling to take the point “communities visited numerous times” in initial days and weeks by UWP Parl Reps, Senators, Caretakers now doing a follow-up visit to assess progress. Do they even follow the news? Paid any attention to the Constituency Reports on Radio by UWP Parliamentarians?? Too bad. Very sad. This is the pattern of haters, who only end up embarrassing themselves.
If they open their minds the haters will realize the Opposition has made an unprecedented contribution to Dominica in the post Ericka period both independently and in cooperation with the useful formation by PM Skerritt of a Parliamentary Ctee involving the Opposition. If ‘all hands on deck’ and ‘unity’ is to be meaningful in the Reconstruction period the PM must be serious about such inclusive structures, and minimize partisan business-as-usual actions.

What a shame and disgrace that a month after one of the most devastating disaster in our history the opposition leader decides to get out of the Q95 studio to find out why it is that the hon.prime minister has been working non stop from the day of the disaster up to the present day. Most Dominicans would have got down on their knees and prayed that the Labour party were re elected in 2014 and not the unelected UWP.

Are you telling me the President of Venezuela have actually come to Dominica before the Official Opposition have found it necessary to go around to see the devastation of TS Erika round Dominica? When we have heard of some many of our international and new friends have visited Dominica since the Wake of Erika. What should we think or make about that?

And the same day the Venezuela President is due to arrive in Dominica we learn the UWP to visit affected Communities. Am I the only one who notices this is no mere coincidence?

Welcome Mr. President to our country and we Thank God for your friendship.

You talk about negativity? Read all the above comments. However the negative commentators failed to see this part of the article:
“The visits come about despite the fact that these communities had been visited, numerous times, immediately following the Storm’s passage by Parliamentary Representatives, Senators and Caretakers of the UWP. It is well recorded the comfort brought to residents by the UWP TEAM Dominica throughout their previous visits.”

As a team, UWP is the first full team to go to the affected areas. As of now, we have not seen a visit by the government and the DLP. As a matter of fact, Mr. Reginald Austrie, who is the- minister of housing, land and water resource management, is yet to be seen, heard of, or excuse given for his absence, at a time when DA is destroyed and no portfolio was damaged by the storm as his. Yet he disappeared and since the storm we all wondering about his where about. Up to today, the DLP, PM, government is yet to tell us about it…

  18. September 23, 2015

my fellow Dominicans plead carefully and understand fully what is being stated in the written article before you post your negative comments about the intended visits by team UWP. the article states “The visits come about despite the fact that these communities had been visited numerous times immediately following the storms passage by parliamentary representatives ,senators and caretakers of the UWP” now I could be wrongly interpreting the statement quoted from the article but it clearly states that the UWP had already visited the places in question so to say better late than never is an untruth. weather you are a Labourite or you support the UWP the truth is right there in the article so let us stop this nonsense. this practice of party political division is destroying our country and we are too blind to see it. when will we wake up from this storm of confusion and division and see things for what they are despite of party affiliation. let us give jack his jacket.

    • September 24, 2015

This can be considered a paid political ad. Therefore anything contained in this article should be looked at through a political lens. The same way that a schedule of of their upcoming visits was published they could also tell us who visited these affected areas immediately after the storm.

This move is 100% political, this plan to visit is almost a month after Erika. The big question is where was the oppossition?

  24. Smart fool
    September 23, 2015

First off, like everyone else in Dominica, for the past 4 weeks, members of the opposition, in their roles as Parl Reps or regular citizens, have been on the ground working with communities, bringing water, food, medical supplies, etc.

Let’s not pretend that we didn’t hear ministers from both parties on the radio talking about their work. For once in a long time, DBS actually allowed both sides on. Lets not act like we forgot the last month was about one national reconstruction body working together and was not time for UWP to take actions as a party.

When the PM and other ministers were working in their communities, it was not as “members of the DLP” but as citizens rolling up their sleeves as they should. In fact, when the Labor Youth members were organized in giving out supplies as an arm of the DLP it was an insult to many as this was NOT the time for political parties to be active, but for relief organizations and groups to be front and center.

LMFAO……. Really UWP? REALLY? How is that suppose to alleviate the plight of these people at this point in their lives? Talk is cheap and unwarranted right now. How about you guys use the little influence you have and put a team together, and go in and physically assist these people, during this crucial time of pain, and suffering. How about you do like the rest of us, and contribute something meaningful, like man power, cleaning supplies, food, building materials etc…etc…..Now is certainly not the time to talk, or score political points dudes, now is time for action and tangible support.

For I’m going to coat him verbatim, when he posted a comment here on DNO on June 28th 2015, he was referring to the protest/demonstration action in New York, He said, “I do not feel sorry or have empathy for any suffering soul in Dominica because they brought that suffering on themselves, by electing Skerrit over and over to do the same thing, which is enriching himself and his colleagues in Govt. while the people suffers yet, they love him for his wicked deeds.

BEB, indeed I said I do not feel sorry or any empathy for the suffering of the people who willfully, and brought all of their suffering on themselves. They create the problems by continually voting Skerrit into office, knowing that the man is an obstacle in the way of progress in the country.

I have some family in the village of Wesley right now whom I no longer care to help, if I must, I do it because as God is my help, I do not wish to refuse helping my older sister, because of fearing God, will punish me. She is one of those who help to keep the country backwards by voting for Skerrit.

Just prior to the election she called asking for some finically help which gladly accommodated her; at that time I told her do not vote for Athenia: I was informed the morning of voting she was the first person at the pooling boot, what can one do about people like her; and that is why I do not feel sorry for even my sister; they love Skerrit more than themselves!

    Well

There have been many calls for the UWP to do something in their own name for the country during this disaster, as thousands of others here and abroad have been doing, so let’s not discourage them even if you may not agree with their method. As the old people used to say “better late than never”, particularly as getting around Dominica is so much easier for them now, thanks to the willing and positive hands which did the work.

If their motives are less than honourable time will reveal it for those of us who are slower and those of us who are sharper will recognise that immediately.

Let’s all be positive and also recognise those UWP Parliamentary Representatives who seem to have genuinely co-operated and worked in their constituencies alongside government agencies and others willing to rebuild.

Better late than never! My dearly beloved PM has weathered the storm, and has proven he is the right man to continue to steer the ship. UWP is about talk and no action, they had the perfect opportunity to demonstrate their worth, they have failed miserably. PM Skeritt, you have solidified your support from many due to your swift action after the storm, you are humble, caring, and these traits have earned you my unwavering support. UWP, please do your part, you must caution those who are guilty of being raving lunatics to refrain from this action. We are one people, however, someone must be at the helm, PM has proven his worth. Hats off to PM Skeritt and Hon. Kenneth Darroux!

    • Bon Dieu
      September 23, 2015

The PM once again proved to be incompetent, selfish and lacking in foresight or care.

Had he listened to suggestions in years past, Dominica would have had a real disaster management plan and could have saved some of Darroux’s families lives in PS. $30 Million he spent to keep his position, but couldn’t invest in a $200K helicopter to ensure that people could be quickly accessed in cases of emergencies like these. Instead he had to have cap and hand out to St. Lucia and others, while he keeps millions of dollars in his personal bank account.

I guess he was so worried about Hurricane Linton sweeping him away, he forgot Dominica has a real hurricane season each year.

Those who Fail to Plan, Plan to Fail. And your “beloved” PM didn’t love you enough to plan for you in case of a disaster. He failed you. Accept it.

You just give us a break Steve. You do it your way in your country we do it our way in Dominica. You said nothing when Skerrit was promoting all what was going on after the storm. In instances where the Disaster people, the Police, the Rescuers and other persons should have beenspeaking, Skerrit was talking for every body, you did not see it unnecessary. So let the UWP do their do. And for the others, the UWP Team were on the ground from Day one, each man in his constituency and you know it well. Even when the government people paid no attention to some of the plights of the people, the UWP were working. And who was it with their good ideas guiding Skerrit what to do so that after Skerrit suck up all the opposition people ideas he block them out. So please have your facts right. UWI informing of its visits to ravaged areas is a followup as a unified TEAM. BYE. DUMB
