Women’s Bureau official concerned about fear factor in reporting of domestic violence cases

Director of the Women’s Bureau, Rosie Brown, has raised concern that fear may be stifling the reporting of domestic violence cases in Dominica.

According to Brown, while persons continue to report cases of violence, the organization is cognizant of the fact that fear is still a major factor.

“Because of the nature of domestic violence in Dominica and the Caribbean, it is unclear whether there is an increase or decease. There is still a level of fear. People are afraid of reporting it, even when it has been happening a lot of times. People are affair of being stigmatized,” Brown said.

She said there continues to be a very serious problem in the Dominican society as it relates to domestic violence.

However, the Women’s Bureau official noted that more people are developing the courage to report acts of domestic violence in Dominica.

She attributed this change to education being provided by the Women’s Bureau and other organizations.

“More people are picking up the courage to report and it means also that our advocacy is bearing fruit and more persons are becoming brave. The impact of our education programme is reaching somewhere,” she said.

The culprit is corporal punishment, you see it often leads to abuse in the home and at school and people grow up thinking that it’s ok cuz they can’t tell the difference, they don’t know when and where to draw the line, they don’t know their rights so they just take it.

To many times women stay and take abuse from men and they are afraid to report because they are afraid to make a report because most of the time the men tell them if they go wat they will do to them ,but i believe thats the time they shoud go make the report and let the authority hold the basters.
but again we have to look at it both ways because the men are being abuse by the women also .there are men in dominica who are being abuse by their spouse and just cant open their mouth to say a word but i am telling u i am not in favour of none of them .cause if a man say he is coming to fight me he would be sitting on the wrong bench at the wrong time .it is time that women stand up for their rite and say enough is enough .

Well, I personally think some people like being abused. I tried to intervene in a cousin’s “love mess” and guess what i got for it a good tongue thrashing, after the bruises were healed. Promise to stay out of all “lovers quarrel.
