The works of three Dominican photographers have been accepted in the prestigious 10th FIAP (International Federation of Photographic Artists) Inter-Club World Photo Cup.

The works of Zaimis Olmos, Yuri A. Jones, and Derek Galon will be presented in Athens, Greece, among other selected best works from FIAP clubs around the world.

It is the first time Dominica photographers participated in this top photography event.

Their photographs will help turn eyes of the international photography community to Dominica as a new place of interest.

Images accepted to show in Athens:
Zaimis Olmos – Kalinago
Yuri A. Jones – Jaco Falls from above
Derek Galon – Anatomy Lesson (homage to Rembrandt)
Derek Galon – Bacchus, Pan, and Ceres

Meanwhile, the Ozone Zone International Photo Competition which had its beginnings in Canada, this year for the first time is run from Dominica as the host country.

The jury, consisting of local and foreign artists/photographers, selected the winners from almost 2,000 of photographs submitted from every corner of our planet.

“We had a really hard task to select the handful of best images,” says Derek Galon, head of the jury and a Canadian pro photographer now living in Dominica. “The quality of work submitted this year is amazing, and what we selected is a truly stunning body of photographic art work”.

“The only thing I missed,” said Sandra Vivas, one of jurors. “Would be more local photographers participating in this fine event. I hope next year we will see some local winning works”.

The competition runs under FIAP (International Federation of Photographic Artists) and PSA (Photographic Society of America) patronage and puts Dominica on the map of international art events.

“We hope to see Dominica as a destination for photographers of the world, expanding tourism and engaging many fine local photographers in workshops, tours, and so on,” says Margaret Gajek, the competition’s chairperson.

While the full list of accepted images along with interactive catalogue will be published on competition’s website www.internationalphotocompetition.com, a gala presentation of Grand Prix and all other winning images took take place at Fort Young Hotel on Saturday, December 12th, at 5 pm.

In opening speeches the special guest – Gerard Jean-Jacques, Permanent Secretary at Ministry of Tourism and Urban Renewal in his comments expanded on Derek Galon’s ideas of using the competition to benefit Dominica as a fine destination. He envisions a separate photography competition for the region, along with photography workshops and other related activities for visiting photographers, run by the best photographers and artists from our island.

Dominica has always been blessed with talent. It’s just you Dominicans who do not appreciate your own talent. A prophet is never accepted in his own home town………..
