Young people register to vote in numbers

voteFigures indicate that young people are going out in their numbers to have their names on the voter’s list as the next general election draws near.

General election is constitutionally due in Dominica in 2015 but there are rumors that it could be held before that date.

In an interview with DNO Chief Election Officer, Steven LaRocque, disclosed that data shows more young people are signing up to be eligible to cast their ballot whenever the election date is called.

He said from December 1, 2013 some 600 people have registered to vote, with ‘young people’ making up the majority.

“We have a number of new registrations from young people, people who turned eighteen or passed eighteen, around that age group …. you have one or two more mature individuals who have decided that it is time for them to register. But the majority that we have is young people,” he said.

When asked what areas of the island are experiencing the highest number of registrations, Laroque noted that the numbers are coming from “all parts of the island, and not from any particular area.”

Meantime LaRocque stated that so far 2,600 public officers and teachers have been issued the newly introducted multi-purpose identification cards.

Issuing of the cards began in early December, 2013.

The cards is a regional identification system that is being developed by the Organization of the Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) as part of the Electronic Government for Regional Integration Project.

All citizens of Dominica and permanent and temporary residents are entitled to a card but must be enrolled under the system.

  1. Let's think
    February 11, 2014

I am pleased to learn that people are registering to vote especially the youth. It is our right as citizens to vote for which political party we want.
However this is a serious life changing decision that we must make based on what is going on in our country Dominica.
I have concerns about many issues:
I would have liked the Prime Minister to share with us the details of the many deals he has entered into on our behalf, like the MOU with China and ALBA. You see because unlike our previous leaders who traveled with a team of professionals for advice PM Skerrit does not.

I would like to know how much money we owe under the Petro Caribe arrangement. After all it is a debt Dominica has to repay and not PM Skerrit personally. The Petro Caribe money has to be repaid.
I would have preferred if the Petro Caribe money was used to purchase produce from the farmers of Dominica to send to Venezuela. Also that some of that money was used to repair the feeder roads. When farmers have money the economic engine generate wealth for all.
I will admit that the New State House is beautiful but it was built with a loan we have to pay back.
How are going to repay for a building which is not generating income. On the contrary it is going to cost us alot to maintain it, pay for the electricity, water and staff to clean it and the surrounding garden. By the way is this building insured?
The stadium is useful when it is used but how many days a year is it used? Is it used enough to generate funds to maintain its upkeep?
The new College building is useful but again is it generating enough income from tuition fees to maintain the building, operate the labs etc and pay staff? The college could not pay its bills in the smaller building it occupied before.
We need a new hospital but we cannot maintain the old one operating optimally. We still charge insurance companies EC$20.00 a day for inpatient care when they are charged Euro 1000.00 per day in the French Countries.
Chronic non-communicable diseases are the leading cause of illness and death in Dominica but instead of investing more in preventable interventions which will save more lives and reduce illnesses at a lower cost, we are investing in the expensive interventions like MRI which we will not be able to maintain and recover the cost.
We send many young people overseas to study but they are hardly guided into areas that Dominica needs as a developing country with the land, sea and renewable energies as its natural resources. Most have to stay overseas for gainful employment. We need a young work force to sustain the economy and to pay into Social Security so that the retired can get their pension to live on.

The shortfall of cost recovery for all these buildings has to come from some other source of income? Do we have this amount of extra revenue to meet this plus service the loans?
It is a good move for every household in Dominica to have flushing toilets. Do we have the funds to bring water to every household? Will they be provided water free and Dowasco instructed not to turn off their water for non payment of their water bills? Will there be a fund to repair them when they are broken as they are in public buildings, schools, hospitals and the airport?
Are business places going to provide washroom facilities for their clients?

These are just a few of the many issues I ponder on when I make my decision as who I vote for.

Grants and monetary gifts/donations help but we have to think of sustaining ourselves as an independent, proud nation.
I encourage other writers to share their thoughts constructively on what they ponder on when they make their decision to vote.
I encourage everyone 18 and older to register even if you have not made up your mind to vote.

I hope the younger voters don’t vote for either of the 2 main parties because they are essentially the same party. The results will be no different. Try a 3rd or 4th party with a person of integrity but not a lot of connections.

i am hoping that the young people who are registering to vote knows that they have to vote for the best of the country. Make sure that the prime minister will be out next election. Too many communist countries are involved in Dominica’s businesses. The Chinesse people will fully take over our people and the country. living in NY for about half of my life, i know that Chinese are only for them selves. In NY the Chinese do not hire no one unless their own people. It is a shame to see our young primeminister is bringing down the country, by dealing with ONLY communist country.

This is one of the best pieces of news reports (and reporting) emanating from the homeland of late. Tantalizingly great news!

Labour can sit on its supposed laurels, thinking that it has this thing (the next election) all sewn up. Without any fanfare, we can attest that entrenched Labourites are deeply disaffected with their party.

Pity we can not name names here – for obvious reasons. We can say though, without a doubt that the Skeritt cabal has grown increasingly rich, arrogant and non-responsive to the plight of the common man in just 14 years! That is crystal clear to all.

Meanwhile, jobs are increasingly on the decline. Social life is a mess. The brain drain continues unabated. The boys are making their own rules, everyday. And the list continues, adding to the malaise that is gripping the nation. And malaway feeling it.

For example, we were at Monty’s in Possie last Friday, end of the month, when disposable income should be a bit more plentiful. And in no less that four hours of sitting at this local eatery, not even ten patrons came there to eat and have a few drinks.

One good and trusted friend (and poto Labour too) lamented her inability to meet her expenses with relative ease when they are due. Complaining about her situation, she explained how she has to rob Peter to pay Paul in an endeavor to make ends meet. She’s sworn to vote against Labour this time around.

Political operatives can drive around with their tinted windows and think that they are protected from pending political upheaval all they want. If they want to save themselves from being swept from power, and especially, from the scrutiny about their doings in government during their time in power that is bound to follow, they better pay attention.

Skeritt might still save their day, if he stops listening to his so-called advisors who tend to tell him what he wants to hear, and not how the people are hurting and how thinks really are on the ground.

Then again, even that might be too late for Labour. Pity.

What type of example would you like the youth of Dominica to emulate from these ministers of government ? You heard of the allegations of corruption which they cannot deny, of the Bin and fertilizer Bobol which they cannot deny,of the 27million-dollar state house when their own parents and themselves live in delapidated homes…the justice systemis literaly in the gutters etc.etc.etc Advise the youth WISELY, my friend !

Hello, young people are registering to vote.Does that mean all young people who are voting for the first time will vote workers?
Are all the young people who registered to vote located in Roseau South or in one particular constituency?
With all the talk where is the leader of Team Dominica running?

That is very bad news for Skeritt and the Labour Party!!

Those people turning 18 now would have been around 8 years old when Skeritt took over the reigns of the country. It means they would have lived for 10 years under the Skeritt Regime and seen ministers enrich themselves during this period.

Now how many of these young people can say that their lives or the lives of their parents, neighbours and friends have improved as a direct result of government policy during this period?

    That is the question!!

    • Gary
      February 8, 2014

What a silly question.Politics can do strange things to the mind. You asked a question based on a preconceived notion on which you have already established an answer. The purpose of asking questions should not be preconceived.

Are you saying that The Government has done nothing to enrich the lives of young people.Have you not seem what the Government has done with The state College, is that not enriching the lives of young people giving them access to a college Education.Have you not heard about The National Employment program geared to young people with assistance from the Small Business Support Agency (SBSA) helping young people to become entrepreneurs. What about the free transportation available to school children,is that not helping their parents with the cost of transportation.Do you know that sometimes you my ask questions and the answers may surprise you making you look silly.

Ten to fifteen years ago the then young people gave a young man a chance and the result has been nothing but disaster. Insults, lies, abuse and corruption in our faces. This generation of young people know better. Independence resulting through employment is the only answer to many of our current problems. This administration has proved itself incapable of a sustainable response to the problem. the UWP detailed the way forward. The young people understood the strategy and have bought into it.
Thank God positive change is just around the corner. The young people will answer the call and ensure that change is a must.

    My youths…

    Listen! Learn! Observe!

It is refreshing to know that you are getting involved in the process in large numbers. The fact that you are registering to vote in large numbers tells me that you are embracing the ways of other youths, worldwide and this is encouraging.

It reminds me of my time when like you I was getting ready to cast my first vote. Oh boy, this seems like it was so very long ago and probably it was. But very little has changed since then. The baton has now been handed to you. Youths, this is your election and the future of our country is in your hands.

Listen to the political and social debates, and there must be healthy organized ones, because that’s the only way you will be able to make an honest choice. Political loud-talking is not the way. Demand structure in the political campaign and transparency within the entire process; if there is none, see whom or which side is perpetuation it and why. And when/if you do, I do not need to tell you what to do.

Ask questions. Make an informed choice. Vote!

Not voting is not an option; vote for your countries future. Vote because it is your rights, and it is also your solemn duty. Vote for the right reasons; those my grandmothers advised me of. Now, go and get some more youths registered.

    Peace

Change must come. I will be a first time voter and I say we need change. If when workers come they disappoint me I say vote them out. Let us exercise our democratic right by voting for what we want.

    Can’t wait for election

  32. February 7, 2014

Simply the Truth on February 6, 2014 writes–

“They must do some good thinking about wanting a better future and for their children. It also depends how old the children are at this time. Know that times change. They must consider what is better future. Some people talk without giving this a good thought. They may vote by their emotions and heresy and not sensibly”.

“Simply the Truth” Nice saying above! Yours is simple and true for sure; I needed to let you know about it–and you have my thumbs of commendation

I keep reading “change must come” etcetera, etcetera, and I definitely believe that those saying are the copies of human wisdom and philosophy–people are simply repeating what they heard from someone else or a group of people–most of the time they do not even know what it is that they are repeating; unfortunately this happens all the time.

Someone said that Dominica needs an
“intellectual” revolution that is very true; in other words that change that is needed belong in the mind of us, Dominicans–I have said that before.

Our people need to stop, look, and listen, to ingest and digest and to put their own thoughts to work effectively; however that is what Dominicans “young and old” are not doing; and yet that is the only change that will be effective, for continuous development in our homeland.

And yes! I am saying continuous development because I have lived in Toronto for 40 years come this April and upon returning to Dominica 2 times in the last 5 years–most recently was August 2013– I am now aware that there is nothing which I do or need in Toronto–outside and inside–that I cannot do or have in Dominica–some features or needs are even better at home, such as choosing my favorite beach to go for some relaxation.

Because of my observance, the decision to return to Dominica, and to die there, if I must die before the return of Jesus Christ, is plastered in my mind–2018, 4 years from now is too far away for me.

Those who are claiming that Dominica’s economy is heading into “endless decline” and that the majority of the people are living in “poverty” those are they who are calling for God’s rebuke and chastening–they will have no hands against His discipline in them

    • February 7, 2014

One thing I also know is the God will give to people what they are asking for–quite often it will be to show them that He is the sole authority through His chosen servants on earth; He despises the fact that we put our trust in all sorts of human beings in the world–as we ignore the fact that He is in control and has the final say.

King Saul of ancient Israel was a good example of how God allows people to have what they want–because they will not rely on His Love and authority, through those whom He chooses to reveal that Love and authority to them.

And so their suffering through the reign of proud and arrogant minded men and women of this world is a way God causes His people to humble themselves and to cling to His authority–or else the go down in shame and embarrassment.

When the Israelites, who were God’s chosen people, asked for a human king because the other nations had their own kings, God was grieved that His own people did not accept Him as their King. Nonetheless, He gave them Saul and all of the other kings after Saul; however He would turn His back on them for many years to allow them to suffer their fate of asking for a human king–who treated them badly for all sorts of oppression.

The people wanted a human king because they did not know and could not deal with Him, because God is a God of Spirit, in Love, Truth, and Righteousness–not of the flesh.

Today the problem of us human beings is the same as those of ancient days. We do not learn to appreciate what we have–believing that it is God’s work in our lives.

Instead we stupidly cry down our environment and those who are appointed to rule over us–we keep making decisions without clear personal thinking–as we depend of the thoughts of others– and those kinds of emotions of our mind that says I don’t him but I like her–May God have mercy on our ignorance of His ways of Life in Love.

Dominicans have some months to go prior to the election. Keep your eyes, heart and mind opened for the progress which Dominica has experienced in former years to the present and future progress. This is how you should vote.
You do not discard what you have which has been working well. Do not be swayed by the noon-day devil which does not want what is good for you, your happiness and your progress.
As for those who shout no jobs and we want jobs, how many who graduated and are unable to obtain employment? This should be the issue; not about those who failed to graduate from school, who did not apply themselves to the opportunity which they had and blew it. They only have themselves to blame. Nevertheless, they could do something about it.
Those who graduated and have sought employment and are unable to obtain it, the sensible thing to do is to contact by telephone or in writing your MP and voice your concern. Request an appointment with him/her. Do not throw words and say the present government is unable to provide jobs for you. You now have Internet and can also take further courses through this medium.
I am certain that there is help for you in Dominica but you do not have the correct approach. You can make suggestions to your government, your MP’s and lobby them for change. You do not have to go about saying, change must come. Ask yourself what change?
I visualize and foresee that Dominicans are extremely fortunate today much more than ever in previous years.
Keep in mind, “God help those who help themselves”. By this I mean, ever be on the lookout for beneficial changes for your own good. You are D/cans. You also hold the key and have an obligation to a better life for yourself and for Dominica in general.
Do not allow anyone to turn your head, your heart and mind otherwise. You know what you have but you do not know what you will get. Weigh out the situation and with the help of God. He never gives us what we are not able to bear. This is always my policy which has worked.
What more can I say to encourage each one of you especially the youths for your happiness and peace of mind? Keep also in mind that other countries of the world experience similar problems.
Do not wish for something that you have no idea you will ever receive and be contented with it. I call this residing in a fool’s paradise.
I want what is best for everyone, for Dominica. May God bless and grace you with genuine wisdom to vote wisely when that day arrives for the benefit of nationals and Dominica. Do not always think of yourself. Think also of others. This should be your vision.
God’s love and peace! He already loves you. Our Lord said, “My peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you…”

its pleasing to know that our young people are picking up their civic responsibilities at this crucial point in our nations history. parents have sacrificed and struggled to educate and empower their children and it is now that this empowerment must be put to use.. young people must usher in the changes that are needed to foster the kind of economic environment that will allow us to repay, reciprocate or to show appreciation for the sacrifices of our parents and those before us, from right here in our sweet Dominica.. The right to EARN a living is fundamental……. a man should be able to provide for himself and his family… EMPOWERED and not dependent on some social program…leeching the already broken system….between 18 to 45 years are the most productive years of a persons life….just look at how much human potential is sitting a waste in Dominica. we need an intellectual revolution in Dominica.. a change in the way we think and do things…. I await change… from wherever that sun must rise…

This current economic downturn globally has given us an opportunity to catch up, LETS NOT DERAIL THE PROGRESS! How could you be against ALBA, yet you haven’t presented ONE other viable option for an economic bloc in the region or beyond that would benefit Dominica, you are against The Kingdom of Morocco on a matter of principle – prepared to get Dominica embroiled in their conflict with a poverty-stricken Western Sahara. You are against China seemingly oblivious to the fact that fences are being mended between Taiwan and China and no longer can we oust one for the other. You are against Venezuela yet you visit Cuba, at a time when Cuba is significantly reducing its outreach in the Eastern Caribbean. When I personally posed these questions to Mr. Linton, not only did he not know what the acronym ALBA stood for, he is yet to articulate his position on these issues!!

what we have presently is ministers that happy to give us a few dollars each time our belly hungry a. country cannot develop like that it is a shame a senor council unelected lawyer is the man in charge of our County spinning 24/7 for the falling ruling party

So you think it is any better in the rest of the world? If people are impoverished the government must financially assist them. Lucky for them. In bygone years times in Dominica were never so good. Those who were unemployed including senior citizens did not receive a cent then from the government.
You probably, as those who think as you do, are too ungrateful. You need to be punished which will come from God for your ingratitude.
Look around you and note the progress in Dominica. Do not be narrow-minded as you appear to be. Smarten up less you suffer because of your overall attitude!

You cannot opt out and say you want to change your voting constituency if you continue to reside at your present address and if you are already registered in your present place of residence.
If you want to change it you must officially change your current address by relocating elsewhere in D/ca. This should be done some months or even a year prior to the election and you must notify the election authorities. I expect this is the election regulation in D/ca.

When we vote we must not only think of ourselves and our feelings, sometimes merely on the surface but of the entire nation and nationals and what will be truly beneficial.

In this day and age no one should have to wait on an individual to call for elections wether it be. I know what the constitution says so those of you who like to trash talk can save yourselves time & energy. The section of our constitution that deals with elections can and should be reformed to place a permanent date for elections. In that way no on party or individual will have an advantage. Before that date reaches people can start getting ready and not wait for parliment to be before desolved and then call for elections.

I reside in Canada. There will be an election next year. Just imagine, it may be sometime this year. We only get a few weeks notice through the Media. It is not a big issue as life goes on. A date has not yet been set. Some people just want to get it over and done with especially that it will cost the taxpayers an exorbitant sum of money for only a few weeks of campaigning.
Frankly, I could not care less. When the date is called I already know which Party I will vote for. I go about my business as usual. I do not make an issue out of it. Give me the simplified life.
