Giraudel – A village mourns

Robinson celebrating her 70th birthday

A pall of gloom hung over Giraudel on Sunday as residents tried to make sense of the brutal killing of 75-year-old Marvlyn Robinson in the early hours of Saturday morning.

While the rest of Dominica was celebrating the island’s 34th anniversary of Independence, news broke of the unfortunate incident which left the heart of many burdened with sadness.

When Dominica News Online visited the area on Sunday it was apparent that something had gone terribly wrong in the usually quiet community.

Uncertainty was etched in the faces of many residents, probably a sign that they were asking questions to which there were no answers.

The house where Robinson lived and where she met her demise was quiet. It is surrounded by a white and green wall, there is a well laden grapefruit tree in the yard and the flowers and landscaping are immaculate. A vehicle with a flag of Dominica  draped on it was the garage, as if waiting to be driven out.

The house where the incident took place

But a yellow police tape on the gate betrayed the fact that something of unspeakable horror had taken place in the house where the senior citizen lived alone.

According to official police reports, a response was made to the home at 2:30 on Saturday morning. “On arrival at the scene Robinson was found alive after sustaining multiple stab wounds to various parts of her body. She was transported to the Princess Margaret Hospital by the fire and ambulance services and shortly thereafter was pronounced dead,” Inspector Richmond Valentine of the Dominica Police Force said.

Inspector Valentine said one man has been taken into custody and is assisting in the investigation.

Neighbours and residents who rushed to the scene after the alarm was raised said the retired nurse was the one who actually alerted a friend that she was attacked. They said she was begging medics to keep her alive when she was taken in the ambulance.

“It was heartbreaking,” a neighbour who was on the scene told DNO.

Now everyone is asking the same question: why?

“I really don’t know what to say,” one resident told DNO. “It is sad. Very sad. This whole place is just in disbelief.”

“She was a nice lady, a gently person,”  another said while shaking his head. “Whoever did this, God must punish them.”

Robinson was also described as a “good but outspoken” person. “If she had to tell you something, she would tell you. She was very outspoken,” another resident said.

She was said to be very active in the community as a contributing member of the Giraudel Flower Growers Group, a cultural activist, a seamstress and a generous giver. “Nothing was too much for her to give when asked,” residents said.

Robinson was known to leave her vehicle at home and take the bus or go walking as a form of exercise.

“She will be missed, she will be missed,” the neighbour who was on the scene when Robinson was taken away in the ambulance kept repeating.

Judging by the mood encountered in Giraudel on Sunday, it will take a long time before that community comes to grips with this senseless crime.

I prepared this writing also for the people of Giraudel who have been shocked and saddened by this senseless, heinous crime against one, a loving person, Marvlyn Robinson who lived among them. Having known her, I have taken it to heart. Be consoled that God has taken note of what this devilish man did to her. In time, he will be severely punished.

We cannot fathom with our limited mind how much the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord Jesus Christ is offended and hurting when people are murdered and other crimes are committed against them. On the inevitable day, all will be truly revealed to us.
First of all, my heartfelt sympathy to Marvlyn’s immediate grieving family. My heartfelt sympathy also goes out to the people of Giraudel and all others as her friends, those who had the opportunity of interacting with her and whom she was of help to during her lifetime, specifically in those past years when she resided in Giraudel.
It has been stated that, when someone dies, the world loses. I attribute this to law-abiding people who were helpful to society, enhanced it including the lives of others and who did their utmost to make it a better, happier, loving and enjoyable place to live. This was obvious in the life of Marvyln Robinson, a friendly person, as those of you who specifically knew her in the past few years could vouch for including her godly virtues of helping others.
I have deduced that after our beloved ones pass on, while thinking, sorrowfully and praying for them they do give us certain visions of them and their life even though we may not have seen them for sometime. In fact, God allows this.
A few reasons Marvlyn returned to retire in Dominica are due to the love of her beloved country and love of nationals. Yes! For its peace, tranquility and safety. She chose to reside in Giraudel, no doubt, likewise for these reasons. She experienced this for the past years as she lived happily among you in the comfort of her home and surroundings.
Fellow Dominicans, especially people of Giraudel who have known Marvlyn Robinson who resided in your village for some years, you know who you have lost, an exemplary national, a good, loving, peaceful, generous, helpful and law-abiding person. It is to be expected that you are shocked and regret the incident which led to her early demise as you mourn her loss.
As fellow nationals, wherever we reside, the sad news have affected us. Those of us who knew her will say, “Oh no! It could not be Marvlyn. This could not have happened to her and why.” When I personally read the news, I was shocked. The first words which came to my mind were: “O My Lord! O My Lord!”
We have taken this matter seriously and feel if only we could have prevented what occurred to her and bring her back. Together with her family and all of you, we are mourning her loss, praying for her relatives for godly consolation and strength and for the repose of her soul.
The murderer has taken a God-given precious life, a lady of good character and exemplary personality. This is difficult to bear whether we knew her for years or whether some did not know her. She was one of us, a child of God and a fellow Dominican.
We hope and pray that the Dominican Law will deal with the perpetrator according to this crime and that if he is not a Dominicans, he should be promptly deported. He should never be allowed to remain in Dominica to live and walk among you. Otherwise, may it be a lifetime of imprisonment for his atrocious crime.
Marvlyn, we mourn your loss. You will be missed by all of us who knew you, those who had not seen you for years and those who knew you when you resided in Giraudel and those after you passed on, through the kind words that they say about you. You will never be forgotten.
A dear Dominican lady, since departed once told me, “The word of the people is the word of God.” Indeed! May your soul rest in God’s glory and peace. Amen! Until we meet, in Heaven, at the feet of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Just a side note notice how all the people doing this type of crimes comes from ‘Christian’ backgrounds. Like the lady that kill her to kids, just saying parents… Don’t force your religion on your kids. Just because you’re born in a Christian family doesn’t mean your kids automatically have to follow. Let them decide on their own.

I knew that boy. His grandmother raised him very well in Newtown. As a matter of fact he was raised in a Christian home. He was a state college student. The old lady helped him with his collegue fees. What could have gone wrong with this boy? My God the devil is at work. We have to pray and pray really hard for our children. The grandmother is a Christian and I know her. I know how she must be feeling. After all she tried with that boy. This is so sad. I am a mother and a grandmother. Lord have mercy on this land. Mother Mary and all the saints in heaven pray for us. We need help in this country. No matter what is your denomination, DOMINICA is under attack by the devil. Let us pray people. We need prayers.

I am pleased to read your comment:

      The Memorare

Remember O Most Gracious Virgin Mary that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, we fly unto thee, O Virgin of Virgins our Mother. To thee we come, before thee we stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate despise not our petition but in thy mercy hear and answer us. Amen!

There are other prayers to the Mother of God, Our Lady. The Holy Rosary is the primary one. The Incarnation – Joyful Mysteries; His Miracles – Luminous Mysteries; His Passion, Death and Crucifixion – Sorrowful Mysteries; The Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ – The Glorious Mysteries.
Encourage others to pray them. God bless you!

A number of senior citizens have been attacked, knocked out, punched, beaten over the years – all in their own homes. I am not satisfied with what is being done about it. The cowards come back to steal and attack a second and third time, and still they are on the loose. Why? Something is just not right with the way things are with the police for one and the Courts. One day hopefully we will get out of running Dominica like a country rather than a club. Jokers everywhere. Let’s see what will come about. May her soul rest in peace. I hope the devil can live with himself.

On reading the story I was brought to tears not solely for the precious life that was viciously taken from her loved ones but for the fact that justice will never be obtained. My heart bleeds for the nation. What a lawless land this country has become because of the failed judicial system. The citizens of the land are weeping and moaning for justice. There are people who desire to return home to reside but wont because of the crime rate.Something hit a nerve real hard when i read that DNO addressed this vicious crime as an incident. This isn’t an incident. Its a vicious and malicious crime committed by a cold blooded heartless person who doesn’t deserve to see the light of day anymore.Too many criminals are getting away with crimes in this small nation. I believe it high time that the Skerrit administration bring back the death penalty. These cold blooded criminals should not be sent to prison and eat the good the land at the expense of tax payers. We need these criminals executed.

This time, I hope not that they will not get away. Dominican nationals must cooperate in this and do their utmost that this disrespectful vieux negre, lowly person is not bailed, do not get away or be acquitted. Prison for life since there is no capital punishment.

What is happening to our seniors on the island must stop, stealing from the lady is not right even so going to the extreme murdering her after recognized you, this my friend is deliberate and premeditated murder

There are too many elderly residing in their homes alone and depriving them that luxury and freedom after working hard for years, this is criminal

If i and right I can recall something of that nature took place a few years ago in Pointe Mitchel where an elderly was raped and murdered and the crack head did not get the maximum penalty which is the death penalty, this sucks

To be honest if any one think that they will go to my parents home, steal from them and then murder them, man i have news for them, where ever I see that person , in court or where ever, man instead of the law dealing with the individual they will be dealing with me, because i will not let them enjoy any freedom, it is wrong to take justice in one hands but in a case where you murder my family i will definitely, do so, because the law in Dominica is protecting the criminals the murderers

My Heart goes out to the family of Marvlyn Robinson, May her Soul Rest in Peace

For years Dominicans have been echoing the voices regarding bringing back he death penalty

This is serious business, the authorities in Dominica need to bring back hanging, these scumbags killing committing these crimes they are not human, they treat their victims worst than animals therefore they should be treated the same

To hell with Human Rights, to hell with Amnesty International they never take steps to protect the innocent/victims

Amnesty International is a left wing that supports murderers

It is a corrupt organization advocating prisoner rights at the expense of countries to keep the organization safe

Dominicans should have the right to arm themselves, get a licence gun, I am residing in Canada and I have three license firearms, well stored, this is to protect my family and myself, if this woman had a licence firearm, for sure this scumbag/ waste sperm would be gone

I can see why so many of the UK, USA, Canadian and others who retired outside of Dominica selling the houses the worked hard to build in Dominica and returning back to the UK, USA, and other countries, due to the fact that they are scared for their lives in DA

For sure no country is safe, but Dominica is too much a small country with less than one hundred thousand residents for all these , and the worst part is that all the murderers are granted bail

BRING BACK HANGING, that bastard do not need to be alive,

Those types of organizations are godless people. Some of them, if not all of them do not believe in God. They are atheists and agnostics. This is why there is recognition of homosexuals and lesbians and so-called same sex marriage, abortions (killing their future citizens) and euthanasia to mention a few. I could cite other matters.
I have no confidence in those people. They have made a mess of society, the world in general. Today, they are advising governments of small islands to follow suit in immorality.
I also say to Hell with them. They are destroying the moral fabric of the world and family life rather than building it up because they lack godly spiritual enlightenment. So much for them. I could tell them to their faces.

I am responding to the best of my ability without prying into her affair. I have no wish to do so. This is my instinct.
She was the only daughter of her parents; the only sister of her male siblings. Her father died when she was young. She loved and cared for her mother. Her brothers loved her too and vice versa. There is no doubt she inherited something from her mother who passed some years ago.
She worked in the U.S. and obviously saved as much as she could to be able to purchase this property for her retirement.
Those who work overseas, upon retirement receive a pension from their employers and also from the government.
She may not have been rich by the standards of the rich but she was well-off also due to having worked hard in the U.S. She has talents as the nursing profession and dress-making, also probably among other talents and could utilize them.
She retired in Dominica, to live in peace and tranquility and to enjoy a long life. I visualize this is why she chose Giraudel. She could have lived in Roseau in the family house where she was born and lived until she left for the U.S. Country life is more peaceful and healthier. Sadly, someone or some people did not allow her to do so. God of all will deal with such a wicked person or people.

I seriously hope that he is Hung for his crime. This was a premeditated act. He did not want Mrs. Robinson to testify against him in an upcoming trial, so he thought it best to silence her permanently; he is a coward and did not want to face the consequences of his actions. I hope he is flogged, and tortured before he is HUNG. Dominica needs to get tough on crime and stop these hooligans dead in their tracks. I know everyone is presumes innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, but in this case this animal is guilty, and will be proven guilty and must pay for his crime. He must be hung; this will send a message to other likeminded idiots out there. I am certain anyone reading this will say that the bible states that “Thou shall not kill,” however it also says “Spare the rod and spoil the child”. It is apparent that the child was spared the rod and the bible means nothing to him, so treat him like the animal he is and hang him. My heart goes out to his family but the reality is that your child acted like a heartless animal and must be treated as such. I am deeply saddened by this, especially being from Newtown, with roots in Giraudel, and I pray that the Robinson family finds solace in the fact that Mrs. Robinson’s murder will not be in vain and will bring about tougher sanctions on criminals in Dominica. If no one wants to perform the execution I gladly will.

When cases like thes lingers before the courts, sometimes years, people tend to forget the victim’s plights and put all their sympathy towards the crimminal, then demanding human rights for the crimminal, when there was no human right for the victim..
I’m not too farmiliar with the lady but I feel the pains that the family are going through
I want to sound a warning note to the would to be defence lawyers. I know that you have a job to be done but I know a lot of you all lawyers have to burn in HEll FIRE.When a crimminal would take a guilty plea, then the lawyer would turn and request an insanity plea, in order wards blaming the victim for her wrongfull death.I want for you all lawyers to take heed and adhead to the warning.

I want to see what the government of Dominica is going to do now. It is about time they step in and make an example of these people. We are trying to promote tourism, but with stuff like that going on who would want to come to Dominica. Dominica has become a lawless country, you kill and you go to jail for couple of years and you are out again to kill. In the days when they hanging people, we hardly had any crime. What is going on this place? Are we going to let them get away this. Skeritt should step in and do something before it is too late. Young people these don’t give a damn.

Dominica, I keep saying we need to pressure our leaders to take a more active stance on crime before it’s too late. If you let crime get out of control. The entire island will be sorry. We need more neighborhood watch groups. If it doesn’t look right, it probably isn’t. I am really sorry to hear this news. I did not know this lady but I send my condolences to her family.

The question is where is the Government of Dominica crime reduction strategy? Does anyone know? You have GIS repeating the same nonsense about our development strategy for how long now. What about a government crime prevention strategy to combat the rising rate of criminal behaviour in all areas of our society. From thieves in banks to delinquent police officers, from drug dealers to murderers, from child molesters to sexual harassment of our young girls in the workplace, what is the government strategy to fight all criminal behaviour in Dominica before we lose a society?

How many more innocent lives must be taken before something can be done? How many more random SENSELESS acts of violence must be committed before the perpetrators of these crimes can be brought to justice?? HOW MANY?????
My prayers go out to her family and the entire Giraudel community. This is truly frightening.

  75. November 5, 2012

Justice must be done now, and it will be done, for the sake of people like Mrs. Marvlin Robinson.

People of Giraudel, my beautiful and peaceful village, remember that our trials and tests demand great perseverance, this attitude is what we need at a time like this; we cannot give up on the work of our God so easily.

As a God fearing people, though we will suffer from time to time, we will not suffer in vain, because by faith we have the hope of God’s deliverance.

And hope does not disappoint, for it is a blessing of Love for us, if hope should ever disappoints, then it is God’s failure–but God cannot fail!

Therefore let us remain steadfast in faith and hope, through this trial and test which we have encountered, believing that we will have victory by our weapon of faith–the kind of faith that is from God because it only works through Love.

Just put yourself in this Lady’s place, you will know how much she suffered before she died. Why he could not take everything and run? But the coward had to kill her. I’m from Dominica, but I live in the USA. I see what criminals do. They don’t only kill the person, but put all the rest of the persons family under so much stress. That’s not right. I love people, but I don’t have no love in my heart for this senseless killing. Would he like someone to do that to his mother. I hope no Dr. is going to say he is ‘CRAZY’ I work in the Medical Field. I know Crazy people and I know ‘WICKED’ people. Everyone want things quick and don’t want to sacrifice and work hard. I am so angry, it is not even funny. Sympathy to the family and the whole of DOMINICA. Her blood has been flowing in vain. DOMINICA, pay attention to these ‘HOME GROWN CRIMINALS AND TERRORISTS. The Bible say to forgive. But this Animal should Suffer before he dies. He had no mercy on the Lady. The Prison Officers, and Police should make him suffer every day. Don’t set him free, he should be stoned to death. This could be my mother, aunt, and moreover she is a Human Being. If the Authorities bail him out, he will kill anyone who is in his way, ’cause he is a home grown terrorist who don’t care about no body and don’t have no feeling for another human being. Why should we pay taxes to feed him. Call the case quick, give him pain everyday. That’s why I believe in “An Eye For An Eye, and A Tooth For A Tooth. Let the ‘BASTARD’ suffer. DOMINICA legal AUTHORITIES, wake up, nip crime in the budd, else it will multiply like a CANCER.
