Government to assist those affected by Christmas Eve trough system

A scene of the effect of the flooding

The Cabinet of Dominica has taken a decision to assist those affected following a trough system which afflicted the island on Tuesday, December 24, 2013.

Heavy rainfall on that day caused extensive damage to homes, businesses and public infrastructure in the south, blocking off villages and leaving commuters stranded on their way to work or to do holiday shopping.

Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Roosevelt Skerrit has stated that among other measures, the government will assist by providing one hundred per cent of the assessed value to repair dwelling houses damaged as a result of the heavy rain.

The assistance measures also include sixty per cent of assessed value of personal household effects destroyed by the flooding, the replacement of textbooks, stationary, uniforms and other school supplies and the provision of limited assistance to businesses which suffered damage.

Government will also pay rental cost for a limited period for those who have to be relocated.

The total clean-up cost is estimated at eight hundred and thirty thousand dollars and will include clearing of roads, drains and dredging of rivers.

Rehabilitation of infrastructure and mitigation measures are estimated at forty-five million dollars.

I am happy to hear that the people affected will be receiving assistance. I live in Canada and is very heart broken by the damage I saw although we had our share, we were hit by an ice storm all of people are still without power.
by heart goes out to the families who lost everything in the storm. I hope they will get the much needed assistance need to get their lives back to normal. God bless the people and country of Dominica.

The Pm’s statement is very irresponsible? Is there going to be some form of assessment? who is going to decide who needs help and how much help is received?

Now that is a great initiative by the Govt. Just as we call them out on when we think that they do bad, so to we must join and commend them for a good initiative. I know most of the people and they do not have insurance. The Govt. must do their best to help. Let us all stay away from trying to score political points at this time and ensure that the victims are assisted as promised. Though I may not vote for you PM, but good humanitarian move. We need this sort of approach in DA.

…A man would do nothing if he waited until he could do it so well that no one could find fault…PM just think of the people that need the assistance now, and do what you do best, which is find funds to help the Needy, we are confident you will…Those that spend their time looking for the faults in others, have no time to correct their own.

      Good points!

Mr skerrit is a political Genius. THE GREAT ECONOMIES of the world, America, China, Japan are all our close friends, No wonder they now want China Too. Interestingly, America cannot stand alone nor can China,or for that matter anyone else, therefore it is only wise on our part to befriend and foster close ties with these Financial Super Powers. And Skerrit is Doing that and more.

WHILE THE PEOPLE AFECTED NEED ASSISTANCE AND SHOULD GET.I THINK THIS PULLING OUT THE DRAW IN THE TREASURY LIKE SANTA WITHOUT INVESTIGATING AND MAKING REASONABLE DECISIONS IS POLITICALY MOTIVATED AS EVERY OTHER DECISION MADE BY THIS GOVERNMENT. USING THE TREASURY TO SECURE VOTES

Kudos to the govt for taking the initiative to assist in a time of need. But in your haste to score political points Mr. PM, did u take time to consider that some of these people are more than capable of taking care of themselves? How about those who are covered by insurance? Will you still provide 100% assistance to them? Shouldn’t an assessment be done to determine who really needs the assistance, and what level of assistance will be needed?…Then again, this is the next level.

They learn their lesson late. This time around it’s “Government to assist.” Unlike other times, “I will give.” Or Skerritt will give. Now it’s the “Government will give.” From the beginning it should have been like that. Too late now. All you will learn all you lesson at the polling station on election day.

Thank God for this Prime Minister and this Government. Some don’t like us to say that but they know we have to be thankful.

They are the best and “YES THEY CARE” we see that daily. When a disaster happens they are in total control. It is by no means easy but this government know what they are about and these are the people Dominica need to be their government. Thank God for them.

God continue your watchful eye on us we humbly pray.

When Skeritt made the statement that Dominica was better then most, the opposition laughed at him. While St. Lucia and St. Vincent will be scrambling all over the world in order to get funds, during the month of December, we heard that Dominica will have in its treasury approximately one billion dollars E.C by 2014. Dominica received U.S. $8 million from the Chinese as a grant. According to Minister Darroux, Dominica is to receive approximately E.C. $100 million from the world bank for a climate resilience program . Approximately U.S. $300 millions in grants and loan to be sponsored by a Chinese enterprise. Also in December, we heard that Dominica had raised $20 million in treasury bills. Therefore, finding $45 million in order to help the people of Roseau South is a fete de comple, that is a piece of cake.
