Acute Psychiatric Unit to be transformed into “modern facility”

Health CareAn over 1.5 million dollar upgrade to the old Acute Psychiatric Unit, APU, building at the Princess Margaret Hospital is aimed at providing greater access to healthcare in Dominica.

The ongoing project will see the once dilapidated structure transformed into a modern facility, housing services never available before in Dominica.

Hon. Julius Timothy, Minister for Health and Parliamentary Representative for the Roseau North Constituency where the hospital is located, has described the project as “a step in the right direction”. Minister Timothy said this is a testimony of government’s commitment to improving the lives of the Dominican people by creating greater access to health services which previously had to be sourced overseas.

He stated further that this compliments other measures already put in place by the government. When completed the old APU building will house a diagnostic centre, including mammogram and CT scan machines, oncology unit, health information unit, conference rooms and situation room.

But wait a while. I thought the old Psychiatric Unit was being repaired to house Drug Prevention Unit offices. Election is around the corner and they start to go crazy so when they wake up whatever they dream it making news. Time will tell.

Modern health facility with diagnostic center, (my big toe)! Boss, I heard more than that already. Remember all what was said about the upgrade at the Portsmouth Hospital? How is was going to be equipped with the latest bio-med equipment and will be the number 1 diagnostic center in the whole eastern Caribbean? Dominicans were told that we won’t have to travel overseas for many of the imaging and diagnostic services we now travel for. What became of all that hoopla?

GENERAL HOSPITAL EXPANSION FOR DOMINICA: Just found this on the net. There will be many issues raised I am sure. http://www.sinomach.com.cn/templates/T_news_en/content.aspx?nodeid=775&page=ContentPage&contentid=16466

It’ a shame though you have to go all the way to a CHinese website to see renditions of the plan for this ‘new’ hospital. I thought it was going to be a totally new project, but seems they are just going to ‘rehabilitate’ the existing structures… kinda the same way they ‘rehabilitated’ the west coast highway.

Most of your comments prove that we write comments just from reading the headlines and not the actual articles.

Because had we read the article we would have known that the upgrade is to the OLD APU BLDG(no longer used for that purpose) for the provision of new services like oncology(cancer) and other diagnostic services.

So all your insane/crazy/mad humor just proves that reading is fundamental.

Mental illness is the leading health problem in the world. It is important to treat that section of the hospital as such…

Please note that a brand new building by itself does not make any facility into a “modern facility”. They have to have the proper systems in place before they can lay claim to that boast.

If you have the same limited equipment, limited staff, limited training then a new building will just be only that, and the same old beat will go on.

Sadly this is not about upgrading psychiatry it is about converting the old APU building into Oncology etc. Very welcome as it moves chemotherapy patients into more secluded environment. However we will have to wait a while for modern psychiatric services with a day hospital outpatient counselling and detox and rehab services for substance abusers

I hope Timothy will take his brain therapy there. I hope skerrit will take his compulsive disorder treatment there and I hope savarin will do his grey matter surgery there. Mervin will be the prison officer attached to the unit.
If election is in March 2014, then they better step on it with four thousand workers so that before March it will be all complete.
They should make a jail downstairs of the unit to house all the ministers, lawrence, kamala, philsbort and daryl. King Herod will take care of Tony. Mervin will pull the rope.

2Anonymous Well Skerrit is already mad. He will not need again. But the other members of the corrupt cabal, and the GREEDIES, who take everything that the poor and needy requires will definitely be treated there.

Should this ever occur, it would be interesting to see what type of government you will get; a radical, dictatorship one. Then it would be back to square one as it were with a previous government dating back to approximately 16 to 17 years ago. God help Dominica and nationals! Many will need the services of the psychiatric ward. Wait and see!
Be careful what you state. Never count your chickens before they are hatched. You may be in for a rude awakening and disappointment.

      • True that
        January 4, 2014

Amazing that you said that. One thing that you must understand is that you aren’t talking for the majority of Dominicans. Your vote and the loud talkers aren’t enough to vote your party in. Screaming corruption is already understood by the majority of Dominicans as a strategy being use by your party to cause labourites and independents to turn against the Labour party. Dominicans are smarter and will look at both teams, Dominica’s economy, development etc. in this global economic meltdown and make the correct choice for Dominica and not for each one of us selfish desires, hatred and revenge.

You should put on your thinking cap and think beyond, not only on the surface with your limited mind.
Have you ever given it a thought that plans could change due to funding? Some of you want too much, too soon and all the time. Be satisfied with what you have at present.
Keep in mind you are not the government or a member of his cabinet. Cease your criticism. Have respect and allow the PM and his Cabinet to perform their elected duties.

Pray to God for yourself, your country and nationals in general. Perform acts of love and mercy that will be pleasing to the Lord.
Do not spew hatred at anyone be it in writing on this Website that will offend Our Lord. He has said, “The insults of those who insult you fall on Me.”
Have love for all and harm no one, in words and deeds, as the Lord has commanded.
If you perform these godly acts as you worship and praise the Lord, you and others will have no need to go to a psychiatric ward.
The Lord has said, “Apart from Me you can do nothing.” Therefore, by His Holy Spirit you can do all things and will receive His blessings. He will shield you from all harm. This cannot be achieved and received otherwise.
Keep in mind, “What you sow you shall surely reap” and two-fold, one way or the other. This is the way the ball rolls.
