Minister for health, Dr. Kenneth Darroux has said the government is embarking on a “remarkable journey” towards a complete and affordable health care sector in Dominica.
At the launch of DLP candidate for the Marigot constituency Gregory “Karessah” Riviere on Sunday, Darroux stated that Dominicans will witness changes in infrastructure and services in health care in the coming months.
“I would like to reassure each and every one of you that the future of health care on the island looks good,”he enthused. “In the coming months you will witness the revolution of the health care sector both in infrastructure and services that will set the standards for health care services in the sub region.”
The minister continued, “From the opening of our state of the art Dominica China Friendship Hospital in the next few days, to the construction of 12 modern health centers and polyclinics around the island. From the inaugural services of an MRI machine to the construction of the new Marigot hospital.”
The new hospital, Darroux revealed, will be a 40 thousand square foot and two story facility with over a bed capacity of more than 50. It will include a wide range of essential modern services such as an accident and emergency department, ambulatory services, intensive care unit, maturity and pediatric wards, laboratory services, radiology department, a trauma center and an operating theater.
He reassured Riviere that within his first 2 years, if elected, he will cut the ribbon to the new and modern Marigot hospital.
Prime Minister Skerrit announced on State-owned DBS Radio on Wednesday morning that the government and Montreal Management Consultants Est (MMCE) have signed an agreement for the construction of the hospital. Skerrit said that work is expected to begin on the facility before the end of the year.
The health minister also gave the assurance that the “historic” pilot national health insurance program will be improved, as well as the availability of specialty services in Dominica and added that twenty-six community health workers will be employed to complete the reconstruction of the nursing service on the island.
Darroux, the only thing this rogue government is gonna embark on is a remarkable exit. As things stand at the moment all you lot do not even get the chance to participate in the next election. For all you Minister a word of advice, you should all assess your position right now before it is to late…! Skerrit will be ok for the time being but he won’t give a damn about all you. Once the full damage in the ministry of finance is assessed the new government will go after Skerrit wherever he might be hiding. Make no mistake about that and those who stick with him till the bitter end won’t fare any better!!

Dr. Darroux. What about properly repairing the roads near the existing hospitals? The possible routes for the ambulances 🚑? I am talking in particular about a lane near the PHM, that connects with the roundabout. This lane was recently resurfaced by the DLP, days before they launched their candidate for Roseau North, Joseph Isaac. It now has a very wide and deep hole that needs urgent attention.The whole front of an ambulance can fit in it. Such low quality road resurfacing is not acceptable for a hospital zone. Do it right the first time around. We deserve the best.

In the absence of architectural plans, the “Photo Design of New Hospital” that illustrates this news item is all we have to go on.
If one were to rate a government’s performance, one should examine the economy, healthcare system, national security among others. The Skerrit DLP led administration has failed miserably in those three most important sectors mentioned. The big Lie again. Lennox made no representation for this hospital. It was the people of marigot who had a peaceful and civil demonstration which drew attention to this urgent plight. If Lennox was doing proper representation this situation would have been his cry in parliament for 4 years, but as usual he is begging for credit for doing nothing.
If anyone must be given credit it has to be the DLP government. They have now given priority to the total package of health care in their health care revolution. But who is it who designs these things? Some foreigner with no understanding of tropical environment such as rainfall, the cooling Trade Wind breeze at Marigot or the need for veranda’s where patients can go and “posay” while they recuperate?
Or is it some local Dominican, trained in “foreign” with no architectural imagination? One feature that you can change right now is to put a cover and arrival ramp by the entrance door, like in the old hospital, where patients arriving in heavy rain or hot sun from ambulance or van can be admitted without getting soaked. I will leave it there, but I do hope that they consulted the nurses and doctors for working advice. Probably not.

A building is NOT a hospital and cannot function on its on. The structure is key yes, but we need the resources, the people, the experts the committed doctors and nurses, that we remain stable with the necessary resources both in human resources (doctors, nurses, specialists etc) and the tools to ensure that our people don`t have to fly out to Barbados and or Martinique, or to the USA. We are fedup with piece meal matters. We hear of alot of big cash circling about the place and yet our island Dominica cannot get moving with the production of goods that our people will stop begging failed incompetent Skerrit and his worthless 19 labour ministers who has done nothing substantial that our Dominica has elevated to this level. All we get and hear is about handouts and big structures which in two years time we have to get money to service it. These big housing structures are not good for Dominica and there again Skerrit has not consulted well. Skerrit is a failure. We welcome The UWP Team.

I read a recent report by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC): Assessment of the Commonwealth of Dominica’s CBI Programme.
According to the report, CBI funds were used to repair three hospitals and six health centres after Hurricane Maria. Tell us which three hospitals and which six health centres were repaired.
